Day-wise Itinerary: Manali to Spiti to Shimla

Day 1: Manali: Arrival and Acclimatisation

Arrive in Manali (about 2,050 m) and check in. Spend the day resting rather than rushing, because tomorrow you climb above 4,000 m and a slow first day genuinely reduces the risk of altitude sickness. Walk the Mall Road, sit by the Beas, and keep hydrated. Your driver runs through the plan for the days ahead. Overnight in Manali. Stay included.

Day 2: Manali to Atal Tunnel to Chandratal Lake

After an early breakfast you leave Manali and cross the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel into the Lahaul valley, bypassing the old Rohtang route. The road runs along the Chandra river through Gramphu, Chhatru and Batal, growing wilder by the hour, until you reach Chandratal, the crescent 'Moon Lake' at about 4,300 m. The final stretch is rough and the lake sits a short walk from the camp. Tonight is your first night under a genuinely dark, star-heavy Himalayan sky. Overnight in a camp near Chandratal. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3: Chandratal to Kunzum Pass to Kaza

Today you cross into Spiti proper. The road climbs to Kunzum Pass at 4,590 m, marked by a cluster of chortens and a small temple where drivers stop to pray for a safe run. From the top the Spiti valley opens out below. You descend to Losar, the first Spiti village, then follow the Spiti river down to Kaza, the sub-divisional headquarters and your base for the next stretch. The afternoon is free to settle in and adjust to the altitude. Overnight in Kaza (about 3,650 m). Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 4: Kaza: Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim and Komic

This is the day the photos come from. You visit Key Monastery, Spiti's largest, stacked like a fort on a hill above the river, then Kibber, one of the highest villages connected by motorable road. From here you cross the Chicham Bridge, among the highest suspension bridges in Asia, strung across a deep gorge. On the high plateau above Kaza sit three villages worth the climb: Langza, watched over by a large hilltop Buddha statue and known for marine fossils in its fields; Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office, where you can genuinely post a card home; and Komic, one of the highest villages in the world with a road. Overnight in Kaza. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5: Kaza: Pin Valley and Dhankar

A day for Spiti's quieter corners. You drive into the Pin Valley, home to India's only cold-desert national park and the Pin Valley's Buddhist heartland, with a good chance of spotting ibex on the slopes. On the way back you climb to Dhankar (3,894 m), the old capital of Spiti, where the monastery clings to a spur of rock above the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers. Those with energy can walk up to Dhankar Lake. Overnight in Kaza. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 6: Kaza to Tabo to Gue to Nako

You leave Kaza and head down-valley to Tabo, whose monastery is over a thousand years old and is often called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' for its wall paintings; the Dalai Lama has spoken of retiring here. A short detour reaches Gue village, where the naturally preserved mummy of a Buddhist monk, believed to be around 500 years old, sits in a small shrine. You cross into Kinnaur and end the day at Nako, a village built around a small lake ringed by willow and monasteries. Overnight in Nako (about 3,662 m). Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 7: Nako to Kalpa

Today the landscape shifts from bare Spiti brown to the greener slopes of Kinnaur. The road follows the Sutlej past Reckong Peo to Kalpa, an old village of slate-roofed houses and apple orchards. From here you get the classic view of the Kinnaur Kailash range, best at sunrise and sunset when the peaks turn gold. Browse the small Kalpa market in the evening. Overnight in Kalpa (about 2,960 m). Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 8: Kalpa to Sangla and Chitkul to Sarahan

A drive into the Sangla (Baspa) valley, one of the prettiest in Kinnaur. You stop at Kamru Fort near Sangla, now a temple to the goddess Kamakhya, then continue to Chitkul (3,450 m), the last inhabited village before the Tibet border, sitting above the Baspa river among wooden houses and potato fields. In the afternoon you drive to Sarahan, home to the striking Bhimakali Temple, a fusion of Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Overnight in Sarahan. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 9: Sarahan to Narkanda to Shimla: Departure

The last leg brings you back to the hills most travellers know. You descend towards Narkanda, and if the sky is clear the short climb to Hatu Peak (about 3,400 m), topped by the Hatu Mata temple, gives a final Himalayan panorama. From there it is a steady drive down to Shimla, where the trip ends and you connect to your onward train, bus or flight. Breakfast included; departure.
