Best time to visit Munnar

The best time to visit Munnar is September to March, when the monsoon has washed the hills green and the days turn dry and cool, roughly 15 to 25 C. December to February is the coolest and driest stretch and the pick for tea-estate walks and Eravikulam. October and November are quieter green shoulder months. The southwest monsoon, June to September, brings the most vivid greenery but also heavy rain, mist and the odd landslip on the ghat roads, so it suits photographers and budget travellers more than first-timers. How to reach Munnar

Munnar has no airport or railway station of its own, so almost every trip routes through Kochi.

• By air. Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest, about 110 km and 3.5 to 4 hours by road. It handles domestic and international flights, and most packages include the airport pickup.

• By train. Aluva (about 110 km) and Ernakulam are the closest railheads, both well connected to Chennai, Bengaluru and the rest of India. You continue to Munnar by cab or bus.

• By road. Munnar is roughly 130 km from Kochi, 140 km from Coimbatore and 30 km from Devikulam on well-graded ghat roads. Kerala SRTC and private buses run from Kochi, Kottayam and Coimbatore, but a private cab is the norm on a package so you can stop at the waterfalls on the way up.
