Best Time To Visit Kerala

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

Kerala is a delight to visit at any time of year.

Every season offers a different delight and unique charm. It’s rightly called “God’s own country” - you can sense divine beauty in every grain of sand and every Peepal leaf floating on the waters of the Mahe River. In winter, the mist-coated mountains of Anamudi and Chembra are incredibly dreamy, and the sleepy plains of Alleppey and Wayanad are ethereal. Generally, winter is considered the best time to visit Kerala. It is the best time to see the lagoons, backwaters, and spice plantations.

Kerala’s climate is classified as a tropical monsoon, characterised by warm and wet conditions most of the year. However, the diverse topography of the land leads to regional variations in temperature and rainfall. Kerala's hill stations—Munnar, Vagamon, Idukki, and Ponmudi—are best visited during summer. During this time, one can go trekking, hiking, picnicking, and biking in the hills. Summer is also packed with celebrations and festivities. During monsoon season, the state turns 50 different shades of emerald green. The low season for tourists is from June to September, and the shoulder season lasts from March to May. However, Kerala is renowned for its delicious tea and sumptuous Malayali cuisine, and travellers visit throughout the year.

Climate in Kerala

Summer Season in Kerala

Summers are hot and humid and can be downright scorching in Kerala. Temperature can reach into the high thirties in April. The coastal regions can get very sticky and suffocating, and you will sweat buckets, but the hill stations of Kerala are at their loveliest in summer. One can escape the humidity and heat in the upper reaches of Munnar, Thekkady, Vagamon and Ponmudi. Cloudy blue skies, rich green surroundings, and the scent of spices can overwhelm you a little. This is the off-season for tourism, as most tourists prefer to avoid the heat, but it can be the best time to visit Kerala if you’re well-prepared. You can combat the weather with light cotton clothing, comfortable footwear and SPF+ 50 sunscreen. You can get steal deals on activities and accommodation at this time of year.

Monsoon Season in Kerala

The monsoon is a season of nourishment and plenty. God favours the land with the gift of life. It rains 15-20 days each month, sometimes in drizzles and sometimes in heavy downpours. The weather can get oppressive with high levels of humidity and heat if you’re not used to such climate conditions, but it is interspersed with days of pleasant winds and sunny afternoons. Everything becomes greener, and plant life sings with jubilation. Jackfruit, Guava, Custard Apples and Papaya trees offer the sweetest fruit. This is the best season to visit Kerala for budget travellers and those seeking tranquillity.

Winter Season in Kerala

Between November and February, the months are dry, with only a couple of days of rain each month. The days are pleasantly warm and sunny, even though it is technically winter. It might get a bit chilly in the hill stations, but people from up north in India who are used to colder temperatures might not even feel it. During winters, Kerala receives a lot of sun, averaging 9 hours of sunshine during February and March. The cosy warmth of the winter sun on your skin feels like the touch of familial love. Christmas celebration is particularly special here. Churches in Kerala are beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments. New Year is also a lot of fun. Visit various colonial historical sites, cathedrals, and quaint markets with your loved ones for a wonderful time.

Vikas's 3 days trip to Kerala

The resort in munnar was not at all good. The rooms and location was good but when it comes to good they serve you the left over food and don't prepare it fresh. I have a very bad experience from aranayka resort. I have recorded the videos also of their resturant incharge accepting his mistake that they cheated when I ordered the meals. Serene Horizon was awesome

December is usually considered the best month to visit Kerala, with perfect weather for exploring the backwaters, spice plantations, and beaches in a dry, cool, soothing atmosphere. Make your trip to Kerala between November and February for a delightful experience.

Winter is, without a doubt, the best season to visit Kerala. Low humidity and mild temperatures make winters ideal for sightseeing, exploration, and water sports. The lagoons and canals of Kerala are purely enchanting at this time of year.

Summer and monsoon are the off-season tourist season in Kerala. You will see almost no tourists in Kerala between March to August. The off-season, however, also includes more festivals like Onam and the iconic snake boat races.

The months of June and July witness the highest rainfall in Kerala. It rains up to 20 days a month, with humidity at 90%. The average precipitation is about 220 mm or 8 inches

With higher temperatures and humidity levels, the weather conditions are not considered the best time to visit Kerala for sightseeing and exploration. It rains frequently and heavily during monsoon season. If you’re visiting during June, carry umbrellas, windcheaters, and mosquito repellents, and be on the lookout for news of potential floodings and heavy rainstorms.

The monsoon season is not the best time to visit Kerala if you’re looking forward to exploring beaches and historic sites. It rains heavily, which can often lead to flooding and waterlogging.
