At a glance: every way to reach Andaman from Mumbai

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Mumbai to Andaman5.15 hours---

By the TravelTriangle Andaman Team, based on 40 lakh+ trips planned since 2011. Updated: July 2026

Short answer, three ways to do it:

• Fly Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ). The fastest and most popular option. There is no non-stop, so you connect once (usually at Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata) and land at Port Blair in about 5 hours from around INR 6,000.

• Train to an east-coast port, then ship. Take a train to Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam, then a government passenger ship to Port Blair. It is the cheapest route and the slowest, roughly 4 to 6 days door to door.

• Train or flight to the mainland coast, then fly. Fly Mumbai to Chennai or Kolkata, then continue by air to Port Blair. Handy if the direct one-stop fares are expensive on your dates.

The Andaman Islands lie roughly 2,286 km (about 1,421 miles) east of Mumbai, across the Bay of Bengal. Because that entire distance is open sea, there is no road or rail line that reaches the islands, and no ship sails from Mumbai directly. So every route to reach Andaman from Mumbai ends the same way: you arrive at Port Blair (now officially Sri Vijaya Puram) either by air or on a government ship boarded at an east-coast mainland port. Flying is what almost everyone actually does. The rest of this guide compares each mode on time, cost and comfort so you can pick the one that fits your dates and budget.

How far is Andaman from Mumbai? Mumbai to Port Blair is about 2,286 km (1,421 miles) in a straight line across the Bay of Bengal. By air, a one-stop flight covers it in roughly 5 hours of total travel. By sea, the mainland ship ports sit 1,200 to 1,360 km from Port Blair.

Mode Route from Mumbai Distance Time Indicative cost
By Air (recommended) Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ), one stop via Chennai / Bengaluru / Kolkata ~2,286 km / 1,421 mi ~5 hrs incl. 1 stop (flying time ~2h50m) INR 6,000 to INR 15,000 one-way
By Sea / Ship No ship from Mumbai. Board a government passenger ship at Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam To Port Blair: Chennai 1,362 km, Kolkata 1,297 km, Vizag 1,216 km 3 to 4 days sailing (+1 to 2 days Mumbai to port) Bunk ~INR 2,500 to INR 4,300; cabin higher
By Train (+ ship or flight) Mumbai to Chennai / Kolkata / Vizag railhead by train, then ship or flight onward Mumbai to railhead ~1,280 to 1,960 km 24 to 36 hrs to railhead + onward leg Sleeper from ~INR 600 to railhead
By Road Not possible to the islands. Drive only as far as an east-coast port, then ship or fly To port only N/A N/A

Costs are indicative and move with season and how far ahead you book. Confirm live fares before you commit.

By Air: The Fastest Way (About 5 Hours)

Taking a flight from Mumbai is the fastest and by far the most popular way to reach Andaman. There is no direct, non-stop flight from Mumbai to Port Blair. Every service routes through one stop, usually Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata, so the total journey runs about 5 hours when the layover is short, and up to 7 or 8 hours if you draw a longer connection. Book a morning departure: Port Blair airport handles most arrivals before early afternoon, and an early flight leaves you time to reach the jetty for an onward ferry to Havelock or Neil the same day.

Which airlines fly Mumbai to Port Blair?

You have a real choice of carriers on the one-stop routing. IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air all sell Mumbai to Port Blair tickets connecting through a mainland hub. IndiGo and Air India run the most frequencies, so they are usually the ones to check first for a same-day single-stop connection. Akasa Air is the newest entrant and can undercut on price on the right dates. Fares typically sit between INR 6,000 and INR 15,000 one-way, cheapest in the shoulder months and when you book three to six weeks ahead. Set a fare alert on your travel dates, because Port Blair is a limited-capacity route and prices climb fast in December and the April to May peak.

By Train and Ship: Via Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam

There is no train to the Andaman Islands. They sit in the Bay of Bengal with no rail link of any kind, so a "train from Mumbai to Andaman" always means the rail-plus-sea route. You take a train from Mumbai to an east-coast port city, then continue by government ship (or fly the last leg from that city). Rough rail times from Mumbai: Chennai around 24 hours, Kolkata 30 to 36 hours, and Visakhapatnam 17 to 20 hours. Sleeper fares to the railhead start from about INR 600. This route only makes sense if the sea voyage is part of the appeal or you are counting every rupee, because with the ship added on top you are looking at four to six days each way.

By Sea / Ship: The Government Passenger Ships

No ship sails from Mumbai to Andaman. To travel by sea you first reach one of three mainland ports, then board a government passenger ship run by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS). The ports and their distances to Port Blair are Chennai (1,362 km), Kolkata (1,297 km) and Visakhapatnam (1,216 km). The crossing takes three to four days depending on weather and the vessel, on ships such as the MV Swaraj Dweep, MV Nancowry and MV Campbell Bay. Ships dock at Haddo Wharf in Port Blair, a short drive from the town centre.

Fares are set by DSS and are far cheaper than flying. Bunk class runs roughly INR 2,500 to INR 4,300 one-way for non-islanders, with second-class cabin, first-class cabin and deluxe cabin costing progressively more. Sailings are not daily and seats sell out well in advance, so this is a plan-ahead option, not a turn-up-and-go one. Tickets are sold through the DSS booking counters and their online portal, not by airlines or travel agents.

Cheapest and Fastest Ways Compared

The cheapest way to reach Andaman from Mumbai is a train to Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam, then a bunk-class government ship to Port Blair. That can total under INR 4,000 one-way, but it also takes the longest, about four to six days each way.

The fastest and most reliable way is a one-stop flight, around 5 hours of travel from roughly INR 6,000. For almost every traveller the flight wins on the maths: the ship saves money but costs days of holiday at both ends.

Permits and Practical Info

Indian citizens need no permit and no passport to visit the main Andaman tourist areas. A valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID or driving licence is enough, and you may be asked for it at the airport, the ferry counters and hotel check-in, so carry one for every traveller. Foreign nationals no longer need a Restricted Area Permit for most of the popular islands, but a few zones (parts of the Nicobar group and tribal reserves) remain off-limits, so foreign visitors should confirm the current rule before booking. There is no time-zone change: the islands run on Indian Standard Time.

Once You Land: Getting Between the Islands

Reaching Port Blair is only the first leg. Most itineraries then hop across to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) by fast catamaran ferry. Private operators Makruzz, Green Ocean and Nautika run the air-conditioned services (Port Blair to Havelock takes about 1.5 to 2 hours), while the state government ferries are cheaper but slower and book out fast. Reserve the inter-island ferries a few days ahead in peak season. For the full island-hopping plan and things to do, see our Andaman travel guide.

Jagan's 7 days trip to Andaman

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Testimonial for Peral Andaman Our Andaman trip was truly unforgettable, and all the credit goes to Peral Andaman for their excellent planning and support. From ferry bookings and hotel arrangements to sightseeing and activity coordination, everything was managed professionally and without a
ny hassle. The team was always available to assist us, ensuring our journey was smooth and enjoyable. The ferry travel between Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Island, and Ross Island was well coordinated, and their guidance helped us make the most of our time. The early morning sightseeing, the unique 58 km convoy journey through the tribal reserve, the breathtaking beaches, and the amazing water sports made this trip one of the best vacations we've had. My suggestion to anyone visiting Andaman is to plan at least 6 nights and 7 days to enjoy the islands at a relaxed pace. Thank you once again, Peral Andaman, for your outstanding service, hospitality, and continuous support. We highly recommend your team to anyone planning an Andaman holiday. A big thank you to Peral Andaman for helping make our Andaman trip a wonderful and memorable experience. Everything was very well organized, and your support throughout the journey was truly appreciated. Your excellent coordination, prompt assistance, and friendly service made our vacation completely stress-free. We had an amazing time because of your team's efforts. A few tips for anyone planning an Andaman trip: - Ferry tickets should be booked well in advance, especially for the routes Port Blair → Havelock → Neil Island → Port Blair → Ross Island, to get the best timings and avoid last-minute issues. - Be prepared for early mornings. Most sightseeing starts between 4:00 AM and 7:00 AM, and you'll usually return to your hotel only around 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM after a full day of activities. - One of the unique experiences is the 58 km journey through the tribal reserve, where travel is allowed only with a police convoy while going and returning. It is a truly different experience and offers a glimpse of the region's unique environment. - The destinations are absolutely beautiful, and the water sports and adventure activities are fantastic. They are a must-try for anyone visiting the islands. Overall, I highly recommend planning at least 6 nights and 7 days to comfortably explore the major islands and enjoy all the attractions without rushing. Once again, thank you, Peral Andaman, for your outstanding support and making our holiday so special. I highly recommend your services to anyone planning an Andaman vacation!

Mr's 5 days trip to Andaman

Overall Experience: While the itinerary ultimately covered all the promised destinations, the first few days of the trip were highly stressful due to poor breakfast service, below-average accommodations, transportation discrepancies, and lack of support from both the booking partner and local agent
    s. 1. Breakfast Service (First 2 Days) Day 1: My flight timings changed, and I requested an early breakfast, which was denied. While I understood the policy, it set a disappointing tone. Day 2: We had an early morning checkout to travel to Havelock Island. We were provided a packed breakfast consisting only of low-quality bread, butter, jam, and a packed mango juice. This was highly unsatisfactory. 2. Havelock Island Accommodations & Itinerary Delays Resort Quality: The resort provided on Havelock Island was extremely poor. The rooms felt like below-average huts, resulting in a terrible experience. Service Delay: It took almost an hour of arguing to get our room changed. Lack of Local Agent Support: Because of the room change, our itinerary ran late. The local agent asked why we were running late and insensitively suggested we should have gone on the tour first and changed rooms later. It is unreasonable to expect guests to go out without freshening up first. 3. Transport Issues Havelock Island: We were initially given an Alto to travel to Radhanagar Beach, which did not match what was promised during booking. After confronting the agent, they upgraded us to a Scorpio for the return journey to the resort. Neil Island: The driver on Neil Island was incredibly rushed, constantly forcing us to hurry through our sightseeing because he had another group of guests waiting for his next trip. 4. Discounts and Financial Discrepancies We were promised a 40% discount on water sports activities, but this was not honored. We were forced to pay the full price/whatever rate was quoted on-site, with zero assistance from your team. 5. Booking Partner & Coordinator Support The resort provided on Neil Island was very good, and the final legs of the trip went smoothly. However, the travel partner we booked through provided almost no assistance during the trip. It felt like we had to figure everything out on our own, and we were left entirely at the mercy of the local agent. Conclusion The lack of coordination, poor initial accommodations, and unhelpful local support made the first few days of our vacation incredibly uneasy and stressful. I expect a formal response regarding the unhonored discounts and the standard of service provided

    Andaman Travel FAQs

How can I reach Andaman from Mumbai?

You can reach the Andaman Islands from Mumbai most easily by taking a flight to Port Blair, the main entry point to the islands. Flights are fast, safe and convenient. The alternative is a train to an east-coast port (Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam) followed by a government passenger ship, which is cheaper but takes several days.

Which airlines fly from Mumbai to Port Blair(Andaman) ?

IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air all sell one-stop Mumbai to Port Blair tickets, connecting through a mainland hub such as Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata. IndiGo and Air India run the most frequencies. There is no non-stop service, so every airline routes through one stop.

Are there direct flights from Mumbai to the Andaman?

No, there are no non-stop flights from Mumbai to Port Blair. Every service connects once, usually with a layover in Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata. When people mention a "direct" flight they normally mean a single-stop, same-airline booking rather than a true non-stop.

How long does it take to travel from Mumbai to Andaman by flight?

A one-stop flight from Mumbai to Port Blair takes about 5 hours of total travel when the connection is short, and up to 7 or 8 hours if you draw a longer layover. Actual flying time is around 2 hours 50 minutes; the rest is the stop.

How much does a flight from Mumbai to Andaman cost?

One-way fares from Mumbai to Port Blair typically run between ₹6,000 and ₹15,000, depending on the airline, season and how far ahead you book. Prices are lowest in the shoulder months and when booked three to six weeks in advance, and they climb sharply over the December and April to May peaks.

What is the cheapest way to reach Andaman from Mumbai?

The cheapest route is a train from Mumbai to an east-coast port (Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam) followed by a bunk-class government passenger ship to Port Blair. The train and ship together can total under ₹4,000 one-way. The trade-off is time: this route takes about four to six days each way.

Is ship travel available from Mumbai to the Andaman?

No, there are no direct ship services from Mumbai to the Andaman Islands. Government passenger ships to Port Blair sail only from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam, so you must first reach one of those ports by train or flight and board there.

Are there cruise or ferry options from Mumbai to Andaman?

There is no scheduled cruise or ferry sailing directly from Mumbai to Andaman. The only sea route is the government passenger ship from Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam. Occasional one-off leisure cruises are marketed from time to time, but they are not a regular way to reach the islands.

How can I reach Andaman from Mumbai by train?

There is no train to Andaman because the islands have no rail link. Take a train from Mumbai to an east-coast port (Chennai around 24 hours, Kolkata 30 to 36 hours, or Visakhapatnam 17 to 20 hours), then continue by flight or by a government passenger ship to Port Blair.

Which is the best way to reach the Andaman from Mumbai?

Flying is the best option for almost everyone: a one-stop flight is the fastest, safest and most reliable way to reach Port Blair, in about 5 hours from around ₹6,000. Choose the train-and-ship route only if the sea voyage itself is part of the trip or you are on the tightest budget.

How far is Andaman from Mumbai?

Port Blair lies about 2,286 km (1,421 miles) east of Mumbai across the Bay of Bengal. By air a one-stop flight covers it in roughly 5 hours; by sea the mainland ship ports are 1,200 to 1,360 km from Port Blair.

Do I need a passport or permit to travel to Andaman from Mumbai?

No. Indian citizens do not need a passport or a permit for the main Andaman tourist areas. A valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card or voter ID is enough. Foreign nationals no longer need a Restricted Area Permit for most popular islands, though a few zones remain restricted.

What is the best time to travel from Mumbai to Andaman?

The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is October to May, when the weather is pleasant, the sea is calm, and ferry rides and water sports run reliably. The mid-year monsoon brings rough seas and more ferry cancellations, so it is best avoided if diving and island-hopping are the point of your trip.

Is Andaman suitable for first-time travellers from Mumbai?

Yes. Andaman is one of the easiest domestic island trips to plan from Mumbai: no passport, no permit for Indian citizens, direct one-stop flights, and a well-worn Port Blair to Havelock to Neil circuit with plenty of hotels at every budget. A booked package removes the ferry-timing guesswork for a first visit.

Can senior citizens travel comfortably from Mumbai to the Andaman?

Yes. The flight is short and Port Blair airport is easy to navigate. Seniors are usually more comfortable flying than taking the multi-day ship, and the air-conditioned Makruzz, Green Ocean and Nautika ferries make the island transfers smooth. Choose ground-floor rooms and keep the daily pace relaxed.
