Purana Qila In Old Delhi
Also known as the Old Fort, Purana Qila is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Delhi. Located in Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi, Purana Qila reflects the architectural marvel of Mughal era. Built by the Mughal ruler Humayun, Purana Qila was constructed to protect the city-ruins of Indraprastha whose mention is in the Mahabharata. Purana Qila in Old Delhi was built between the 11th and 17th centuries.
History of Purana Qila In Old Delhi: The Qila is built on the banks of the Yamuna river and is one of the oldest forts of Delhi. The pottery and terracotta figures of animals and humans found to belong to the Mauryan period in 300 BC. In 1533, the Qila was renovated by Humayun and it took around 5 years to complete. The fort also served as a refugee camp in 1947 and 1948, for those migrating to Pakistan, just after the independence.

Things To Do At Purana Qila In Old Delhi: Boat rides or shikara rides are available at chargeable basis in the lake. Visitors take out time to enjoy the pastime activities. There are three grand gates in the Purana Qila such as The Humayun Darwaza, Bara Darwaza and Talaqi Darwaza which are also built up of red sandstone. While the Bara Darwaza and the Humayun Darwaza were the only two gates open for entry to the tourists, the Talaqi Darwaza still remains prohibited. Hence, the name “Talaqi” which is synonymous to ‘forbidden’.
