How To Reach Kasauli From Delhi

Short on time? Here is the quick verdict. The cheapest way is the train to Kalka followed by a short taxi or bus up to Kasauli. The fastest is a flight to Chandigarh and a road transfer, though it only really saves time on an early departure. By Cab or Taxi from Delhi

A private cab is the way most couples and families reach Kasauli, and it is the option people search for most. A one-way outstation taxi from Delhi runs from about Rs 4,300 to Rs 4,500 for a sedan, with an SUV a little higher, and the drive takes 6 to 6.5 hours over roughly 290 to 300 km. Round trips are usually quoted as a two or three day package rather than a flat fare, so ask the operator for a per-km rate plus the driver allowance before you book. The big advantage is that the cab drops you right at your hotel in Kasauli or nearby Dharampur, which the train and flight routes cannot. Arriving by rail or air instead? Shared taxis from Kalka or Chandigarh are a cheaper way to cover the last leg.

By Train via Kalka

Because Kasauli has no station of its own, the rail route runs to Kalka, the nearest railhead, about 25 km away. From New Delhi the two trains worth booking are the Kalka Shatabdi (12011), which covers the roughly 269 km to Kalka in about four hours, and the Himalayan Queen (14095) out of Delhi Sarai Rohilla. From Kalka you finish the last stretch to Kasauli by taxi in around 45 minutes, or by local bus. Rail fans can also switch to the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla toy train and get off at Dharampur, the closest halt to Kasauli at about 12 km, though the direct Kalka taxi is quicker for most. In peak season, book Shatabdi seats a few days ahead, as the Kalka route fills fast.

By Road and Self-Drive

The road trip from Delhi to Kasauli covers about 290 to 300 km and takes 6 to 6.5 hours in normal traffic. The route follows NH44 through Sonipat, Panipat and Ambala, then Zirakpur and Parwanoo, before the final climb past Dharampur into Kasauli. It is a smooth, mostly four-lane drive until the last 30 km of hill road, so it works even if it is your first time driving in the mountains. Budget roughly Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 for fuel and tolls each way in a petrol car. Prefer not to drive? Regular Volvo and HRTC buses leave Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate for Chandigarh, Kalka and Shimla, with fares from about Rs 500. Most drop you at Dharampur or Parwanoo, from where a short taxi finishes the trip.

By Air via Chandigarh

There is no airport at Kasauli, so the nearest is Chandigarh (IXC), about 65 km away by road. Delhi to Chandigarh flights take around an hour, after which it is a 2 to 2.5 hour drive up to Kasauli by cab or bus. Once you add check-in and the road transfer, flying only saves real time on an early-morning departure. For an afternoon flight, a direct cab often works out just as fast and costs less. At the airport you will find prepaid taxis and app cabs, or you can pre-book a transfer through your hotel.
