How to Reach Shimla from Mumbai: Train, Flight, Bus & Road

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Mumbai to Shimla-37.0 hours20.0 hours-

Short version first: there is no direct train and no direct flight from Mumbai to Shimla, because Shimla sits high in the hills with no broad-gauge line and barely any air service of its own. Every route runs through Chandigarh or Kalka, about 113 km short of Shimla, and you finish the last leg by road or on the famous Kalka to Shimla toy train.

So the real choice is how you cover the roughly 1,650 km between the two cities. Fly to Chandigarh and drive up and you are in Shimla in about 6 to 8 hours, the fastest option. Take a train to Chandigarh and you trade time for a Sleeper fare from around Rs 740, roughly a day on the rails. Go entirely by bus or car via Delhi and it is the cheapest way but also the slowest, close to 40 hours. The full comparison, named trains, fares and the toy-train last leg are below.

How to Reach Shimla from Mumbai at a Glance

Four practical ways to make the trip, with real routes, times and rough costs per person. Chandigarh is your railhead and airport. Kalka is the nearest station to Shimla itself. Pick the row that matches whether you are optimising for speed, budget or the journey.

Mode Route Distance Time Approx cost (pp) Best for
Flight + taxi Fly Mumbai (BOM) to Chandigarh (IXC), then road to Shimla ~1,650 km 6 to 8 hrs Rs 5,000 to 8,000 Fastest, saving a full day
Train + road / toy train Train Mumbai to Chandigarh, then taxi or Kalka toy train ~1,650 km 26 to 31 hrs Rs 800 to 4,500 (by class) Budget travel, the scenic toy train
Bus / road via Delhi Mumbai to Delhi, then Delhi to Shimla by bus ~1,700 km 40 to 42 hrs Rs 1,700 to 3,000 The cheapest overall fare
Self-drive Mumbai to Shimla by NH, via Delhi and Chandigarh ~1,700 km 30 to 35 hrs Fuel + tolls Road-trippers, flexible stops

Mumbai to Shimla by Train

This is the query most people search, so here is the honest answer up top: no train runs all the way from Mumbai to Shimla. Shimla's own station is a narrow-gauge halt on the toy-train line, so mainline trains from Mumbai terminate at Chandigarh, about 113 km short. You cover the rest by road or by switching to the Kalka to Shimla toy train.

Three trains do the Mumbai to Chandigarh run directly, boarding at Panvel or Bandra Terminus rather than the main CSMT station. These are the ones the rail-booking sites list for this route.

Direct trains from Mumbai to Chandigarh

Train (No.) Boards at Departure window Run time to Chandigarh
Sampark Kranti (12217) Panvel (PNVL) Morning ~23h 15m
Paschim Express (12925) Bandra Terminus (BDTS) Late morning ~27h 50m
Goa Sampark Kranti (12449) Panvel (PNVL) Evening (fastest) ~22h 45m

Exact departure and arrival clock times shift with the timetable, so check live times and seat availability on IRCTC before you book. Run times run roughly a day either way.

Book the Goa Sampark Kranti if you want the shortest run. Fares scale with class the usual way. Sleeper starts around Rs 740 to Rs 750, the AC tiers climb through 3AC and 2AC, and First AC tops out near Rs 4,480 to Rs 4,530. Sleeper is the value pick for the money term mumbai to shimla train ticket price, but book two to three weeks ahead, because these are the only direct options and they fill up.

The last leg: Chandigarh or Kalka to Shimla

Once you reach Chandigarh you have two ways up the hill. The quick way is a taxi or bus straight to Shimla, about 113 km and 3 to 3.5 hours on the winding NH5. The memorable way is the Kalka to Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line that climbs 96 km through more than 100 tunnels and takes 5 to 6 hours. Hop a short train or cab from Chandigarh to Kalka (KLK), then ride the toy train up. It is slow on purpose, and for many travellers it is the best part of the trip.

The line opened in 1903 and joined UNESCO's Mountain Railways of India list in 2008. It crosses more than 800 small bridges and burrows through the long Barog tunnel on the way up, gaining nearly 1,500 metres of altitude between Kalka and Shimla. In peak season (April to June and the December snow window) the toy train sells out, so reserve your seat a few days ahead rather than turning up at Kalka on the day. If you are short on time, take the quicker road taxi from Chandigarh and save the toy train for a day trip once you are settled in Shimla.

Mumbai to Shimla by Flight

If speed is the priority, fly. There is no nonstop Mumbai to Shimla flight, and Shimla's own airport at Jubbarhatti has only sporadic, weather-dependent service, so the reliable play is to fly into Chandigarh (IXC). The Mumbai to Chandigarh hop takes about 2 to 2 hours 20 minutes and runs several times a day.

Chandigarh (IXC) is the airport to aim for because it has frequent daily flights from Mumbai and a smooth 113 km road link up to Shimla. Shimla does have its own airstrip at Jubbarhatti, about 22 km from town, but flights there are few, small and often grounded by weather, so do not build your plan around them. Land at Chandigarh instead and treat the drive up as part of the trip.

From Chandigarh airport a prepaid taxi reaches Shimla in roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. Add check-in and the drive and you are looking at 6 to 8 hours door to door, which still beats the train by a clear day. That is why fly-plus-drive is the fastest option on the comparison table and the one to choose if your leave is tight. Book the flight leg two to three weeks out for the best fares, since the Mumbai to Chandigarh sector gets pricey close to departure.

Mumbai to Shimla by Bus and Road

There is no direct Mumbai to Shimla bus either. The overland route always breaks at Delhi. You cover Mumbai to Delhi first, by train or flight if you value time, or by long-distance bus if you are counting every rupee. From Delhi, frequent HRTC and private Volvo services run the well-served Delhi to Shimla leg, about 340 km and 9 to 10 hours, departing mostly from Kashmere Gate ISBT and reaching Shimla's Tutikandi bus stand. You can pick ordinary, AC Volvo or the government Himsuta coaches depending on budget.

End to end, the all-bus journey is close to 40 to 42 hours, which is why it is the cheapest but the slowest choice, with fares in the Rs 1,700 to 3,000 band. Overnight buses on the Delhi to Shimla stretch are the smart way to do it, so you sleep through the plains run and wake for the hill climb.

Driving yourself covers roughly 1,700 km over 30 to 35 hours, through Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Chandigarh before the final ascent. Split it across two or three days with an overnight near Udaipur or Delhi rather than pushing straight through. The mountain stretch past Chandigarh is the tiring part, with tight bends and slow traffic near Shimla, so start that leg fresh and in daylight. Fuel and tolls, not a ticket, set your cost here.

Nearest Railway Station, Distance and Best Time to Visit

The nearest railway station to Shimla is Kalka (KLK), about 90 km away by road and the starting point of the toy train. Mumbai's mainline trains do not reach Kalka directly, though. They terminate at Chandigarh (CDG), about 113 km from Shimla, which is why Chandigarh is your practical railhead coming from Mumbai. Shimla's own station (SML) handles only the narrow-gauge toy train.

On distance, Mumbai to Shimla is about 1,650 km by rail and about 1,700 km by road. You will see a slightly higher figure quoted on some pages, but the rail and highway distances both sit close to this range.

For timing, aim for March to June if you want pleasant days around 15 to 30 degrees Celsius and the toy train at its prettiest. December to February brings snow and is the season for it, though hill roads can close briefly after heavy falls. Skip July to September: the monsoon makes the mountain highways slow and landslide-prone, exactly the legs you cannot avoid on this route.

A few practical tips for the journey

Book the long-haul leg first. The three direct Mumbai to Chandigarh trains and the Mumbai to Chandigarh flights both get expensive and sell out two to three weeks ahead, so lock that before the hotel. Carry a printed or offline ticket for the toy train, since the small Kalka platform gets crowded in season. Pack warm layers from December to February even if Mumbai is hot when you leave, because Shimla can drop near freezing. And remember Shimla restricts vehicles near the Mall Road core, so most taxis drop at Tutikandi or the lower lots and you walk or take the lift up the last stretch.

Planning the Whole Shimla Trip, Not Just the Journey

Once you have picked how to get there, the harder part is the rest of the trip. If you would rather not stitch together trains, taxis and hotels yourself, browse Shimla tour packages from Mumbai that bundle the transfers, stay and sightseeing into one customisable plan. For everything to see and do once you arrive, our full Shimla travel guide covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Kufri and Jakhu, and the wider Himachal tour packages page helps if you want to pair Shimla with Manali or Kullu.

Our trip with Travel Triangle was excellent overall. The hotel selections were great, and special thanks to our travel agent Sandeep for his efforts in making our journey memorable and well organized. Our driver Piyush was humble, professional, and made our trip comfortable and enjoyable. However, t

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Shimla Travel FAQs

Is there a direct train from Mumbai to Shimla?

No. There is no direct train because Shimla has only a narrow-gauge toy-train station. Mainline trains from Mumbai such as the Sampark Kranti (12217), Paschim Express (12925) and Goa Sampark Kranti (12449) terminate at Chandigarh, about 113 km from Shimla. From there you take a taxi or bus, or switch to the Kalka to Shimla toy train for the last leg.

Which is the nearest railway station to Shimla from Mumbai?

The nearest railway station to Shimla itself is Kalka (KLK), roughly 90 km away and the start of the toy train. Coming from Mumbai, though, your practical railhead is Chandigarh (CDG), about 113 km from Shimla, since that is where the direct Mumbai trains stop. Shimla's own SML station handles only the narrow-gauge line.

What is the Mumbai to Shimla train ticket price?

Fares depend on class on the Mumbai to Chandigarh leg. Sleeper starts around Rs 740 to Rs 750, and it rises through 3AC and 2AC to about Rs 4,480 to Rs 4,530 in First AC. You then pay separately for the short Chandigarh or Kalka to Shimla leg, which is a low taxi, bus or toy-train fare. Check IRCTC for live fares before you book.

How long does the Mumbai to Shimla train take?

The direct trains take about 22 to 28 hours just to reach Chandigarh, with the Goa Sampark Kranti the quickest at around 22 hours 45 minutes. Add 3 to 3.5 hours by road to Shimla, or 5 to 6 hours if you take the scenic Kalka toy train. Budget a full day of travel for the whole journey by rail.

What is the fastest way to reach Shimla from Mumbai?

Flying is fastest. There is no nonstop Shimla flight, so fly Mumbai to Chandigarh in about 2 hours, then drive 3 to 3.5 hours up to Shimla. Door to door that is roughly 6 to 8 hours, which saves you a full day over the train.

What is the cheapest way to reach Shimla from Mumbai?

The cheapest option is overland via Delhi: reach Delhi as economically as you can, then take an HRTC or Volvo bus on the frequent Delhi to Shimla route. The all-bus trip runs close to 40 to 42 hours end to end, with fares in the Rs 1,700 to 3,000 band. A Sleeper train ticket to Chandigarh is a good middle ground on cost and comfort.

Can I drive from Mumbai to Shimla, and how far is it?

Yes. It is about 1,700 km by road and takes 30 to 35 hours of driving through Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Chandigarh before the final hill climb. Split it over two or three days with an overnight near Udaipur or Delhi. Tackle the mountain stretch past Chandigarh in daylight when you are fresh.

What is the best time to travel from Mumbai to Shimla?

March to June is ideal for pleasant weather and clear toy-train views, while December to February is the season for snow. Avoid July to September, when the monsoon slows the mountain roads and raises the landslide risk on the very legs you cannot skip on this route.
