Mumbai to Himachal at a Glance: Train vs Flight vs Road

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Mumbai to Himachal-28.0 hours--

Himachal Pradesh is a long way from the coast, and the honest answer to how to reach it from Mumbai is that no single train, flight or bus runs the whole way. There is no direct train from Mumbai to Himachal and no non-stop flight either, so every route breaks into two legs: get to a gateway near the hills first, then finish the last stretch by road or toy train. The good news is that the connections are frequent and well worn. Below we lay out all three modes, air, train and road, with the real railheads, named trains, fares and journey times, then a clear cheapest-versus-fastest verdict so you can pick the route that fits your trip. Distances are roughly 1,900 to 2,000 km, so plan a travel day at each end.

Three practical ways cover the Mumbai to Himachal journey. Each trades money for time in a different way. The table sums up realistic totals to a typical Himachal hill town such as Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala.

Mode Realistic total time Approx cost per person Best for
Train (to the plains, then bus) About 24 to 30 hrs to the railhead, plus 2 to 4 hrs onward Sleeper about Rs 765, up to Rs 4,760 in 1A, plus a short bus fare The cheapest comfortable option and the classic overnight sleeper
Flight (via Delhi or Chandigarh) Roughly half a day; a 2 hr air leg then onward road or a short hop About Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000 airfare, plus taxi Saving a full day; the fastest way overall
Road and bus (via Delhi or Chandigarh) About 28 to 32 hrs end to end About Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 by Volvo Budget travellers happy with a long overnight bus from Delhi

The verdict. Fastest is to fly Mumbai to Chandigarh or Delhi and finish by taxi or a short connecting flight, which gets you into the hills the same day. Cheapest is an overnight sleeper train up to the Punjab plains, then an HRTC bus on to Una and your hill town, a little under a day and a half door to door for well under two thousand rupees. The single train most travellers actually board is the Swaraj Express 12471 from Bandra Terminus, the quickest of the group, changing at a junction such as Ambala for the two to four hour bus that finishes the trip.

Mumbai to Himachal by Train: Railheads and the Named Trains

This is the part most guides get wrong. Himachal has almost no railway inside the state, so you do not book a ticket to Shimla or Manali. You book to a railhead near the hills and finish by road. For the Kangra, Dharamshala, Mandi and Manali belt, the closest Himachal railhead is Una Himachal (station code UHL); from Mumbai you get there by riding a main-line train north and changing at a junction such as Ambala. For Shimla, the alternative railhead is Kalka (KLK), from where the famous Kalka to Shimla toy train climbs into the hills.

No single train from Mumbai runs all the way to Una, so despite what some booking aggregators suggest, picking the right main-line train and junction is the whole game. From Bandra Terminus the Swaraj Express 12471 heads north up the Delhi to Amritsar corridor toward Katra and is the fastest of the group; the Paschim Express 12925, also from Bandra Terminus, runs daily toward Amritsar and is easy to get a berth on. You alight at a junction such as Ambala and take a connecting bus or branch-line train the last stretch to Una and the foothills. Fares are per person and move with dynamic pricing, so treat these as a live band rather than a fixed rate.

Train (number) Boards at (Mumbai) Main line runs to Change at (for Himachal) Fares by class
Swaraj Express 12471 (fastest) Bandra Terminus Katra Ambala, for Una and the Kangra belt SL ~Rs 765 / 3A ~Rs 1,930 / 2A ~Rs 2,750 / 1A ~Rs 4,625
Paschim Express 12925 (daily) Bandra Terminus Amritsar Ambala, for Una and the Kangra belt SL ~Rs 785 / 3A ~Rs 1,985 / 2A ~Rs 2,830 / 1A ~Rs 4,760
Jat Vivek Express 19027 Bandra Terminus Jammu Tawi Ambala, for Una and the Kangra belt Sleeper and AC, similar band
CSMT Amritsar Express 11057 Mumbai CSMT Amritsar Ambala, for Chandigarh and the Shimla side Sleeper and AC

If Shimla is your target, there is a prettier option. Take any Mumbai to Delhi train, then the short Delhi to Kalka leg, and board the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed line that winds up through 100-odd tunnels in about five hours. It is slower than a bus but it is the journey people remember. Chandigarh and Ambala are the other useful junctions: alight there and Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses and Volvo coaches run onward to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala through the day.

Mumbai to Himachal by Flight: No Non-Stop, So Connect Smart

There is no non-stop flight from Mumbai to Himachal Pradesh. Every air route connects, usually through Delhi or Chandigarh, and Himachal's own airports are small, weather-sensitive and served by a handful of turboprop flights. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai connects to three airports inside the state, and it is worth getting their names right because most pages mix them up.

Bhuntar Airport (KUU) is the airport for Kullu and Manali, not Shimla. Shimla is served by Jubbarhatti Airport (SLV), about 22 km from the town. Gaggal Airport (DHM) near Kangra is the gateway for Dharamshala and McLeodganj. Direct flights into these three are limited and pricey, so the reliable play for most travellers is to fly Mumbai to Chandigarh (IXC) or Mumbai to Delhi, a roughly two hour hop, and drive the last stretch. Flying into Chandigarh is often the quickest overall way to reach the Shimla and Manali belt, since the road onward is good and you skip the small-airport uncertainty. Budget the air leg at about Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000 depending on season and how early you book.

Mumbai to Himachal by Road and Bus

A Mumbai to Himachal road trip is a genuine long haul, roughly 2,000 km and 28 to 32 hours of driving spread over two days with a night halt around Udaipur or somewhere on the Delhi corridor. There is no direct bus from Mumbai to Himachal, so the practical route is to reach Delhi or Chandigarh first, by train or a cheap flight, and pick up an onward coach from there. From Delhi and Chandigarh, both Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses and private Volvo operators run frequent overnight services to Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie. The cheapest end-to-end combination anyone actually uses is a sleeper train to the plains and an HRTC bus onward, around 26 hours in total for a fraction of the airfare. Self-drivers take NH 48 north toward Delhi, then head into the hills via Chandigarh; the mountain roads beyond are slow, so add buffer time in the last 200 km.

Onward From the Railhead to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala

The gateway you aim for depends on the Himachal town you actually want. Here is the best last leg for the three most-booked destinations, with detailed city guides linked for each.

For Shimla, the toy train from Kalka is the scenic pick, or take an HRTC or Volvo bus from Chandigarh, about 3 to 4 hours up the hill.

For Manali, ride to Una or Chandigarh and take an overnight Volvo, roughly 8 to 10 hours, or fly into Bhuntar (KUU) if the schedule and budget allow.

For Dharamshala and McLeodganj, Una is the closest railhead: it is about a 4 hour bus or taxi to Kangra, or you can fly into Gaggal (DHM) when flights run.

Best Time to Make the Trip

Timing decides how easy the last leg is. March to June is peak summer-escape season, pleasant in the hills and the safest window for the mountain roads and small hill airports. July to September brings the monsoon, when landslides can close stretches of road, so keep buffer days. October to February turns the high valleys cold and snowy, beautiful for Shimla and Manali but with the odd road or toy-train disruption. For a fuller month-by-month breakdown, see the Himachal best-time guide.

Why plan with us. TravelTriangle has helped over 40 Lac travellers plan trips across India since 2011, and Himachal is one of the most-booked mountain states on the platform. Every route on this page is one our travel experts arrange every season, so the railheads, connections and fare bands reflect how people really make this journey.

Once you have picked your route, the last decision is whether to stitch the legs together yourself or let someone handle the transfers. If you would rather skip the train-to-bus juggling, compare Mumbai to Himachal tour packages and travel straight to the mountains.

Our trip with Travel Triangle was excellent overall. The hotel selections were great, and special thanks to our travel agent Sandeep for his efforts in making our journey memorable and well organized. Our driver Piyush was humble, professional, and made our trip comfortable and enjoyable. However, t
he experience took a disappointing turn on the last day when a different driver was assigned, and the decline in service quality unfortunately affected an otherwise wonderful trip. We hope Travel Triangle maintains consistent service standards throughout the journey, as the last impression matters the most.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Himachal Travel FAQs

Is there a direct train from Mumbai to Himachal Pradesh?

No. Himachal has very little railway inside the state, so you cannot book a ticket straight to Shimla or Manali. The nearest railhead is Una Himachal (UHL), about 1,382 km from Mumbai, with four direct trains. For Shimla you can instead reach Kalka and take the Kalka to Shimla toy train. From either railhead you finish the trip by road.

Which is the fastest train from Mumbai to Himachal?

The Swaraj Express 12471 from Bandra Terminus is the quickest, reaching Una Himachal in about 23 hours 54 minutes. The Paschim Express 12925 runs daily but is slower at roughly 30 hours 46 minutes. From Una, an HRTC or Volvo bus covers the last 2 to 4 hours to most hill towns.

Which railway station should I book to for a Himachal trip?

Book to Una Himachal (UHL) for Dharamshala, Kangra, Mandi and the Manali side, since it is the closest railhead to that belt. Book to or via Kalka (KLK) for Shimla, where the heritage toy train takes over. Chandigarh and Ambala are useful junctions if you want to switch to a bus.

What is the cheapest way to reach Himachal from Mumbai?

A sleeper-class train to Una followed by an HRTC bus onward is the cheapest sensible option, around 26 hours in total and well under two thousand rupees per person. A budget flight to Delhi plus an overnight Volvo can cost about the same if you catch a fare sale.

What is the fastest way to reach Himachal from Mumbai?

Fly. A roughly two hour flight from Mumbai to Chandigarh or Delhi, then a taxi or a short connecting hop, gets you into the hills the same day. Flying into Chandigarh is usually quickest for the Shimla and Manali belt because the onward road is good and you avoid the small hill airports.

Is there a direct flight from Mumbai to Himachal Pradesh?

No, there is no non-stop flight. All routes connect, normally through Delhi or Chandigarh. Himachal's own airports are Bhuntar (KUU) for Kullu and Manali, Jubbarhatti (SLV) for Shimla and Gaggal (DHM) for Kangra and Dharamshala, and they see only limited turboprop flights.

How far is Mumbai from Himachal by train and by road?

By train it is about 1,382 km to the Una railhead. By road it is roughly 2,000 km via Delhi or Chandigarh, which works out to 28 to 32 hours of driving and is best split over two days with a night halt.

Should I go to Shimla or Manali first from Mumbai?

For Shimla, the neatest arrival is the Kalka toy train or a short bus from Chandigarh. For Manali, route through Una or Chandigarh and take an overnight Volvo, about 8 to 10 hours, or fly into Bhuntar. If you have the days, many Mumbai travellers pair both on one Himachal loop.

Can I travel to Himachal from Mumbai by bus?

Not directly. There is no through bus, so reach Delhi or Chandigarh first by train or flight, then pick up an HRTC or private Volvo coach. Frequent overnight services run from both cities to Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie.

How many days should I keep for a Himachal trip from Mumbai?

Add a full travel day at each end, because even the fastest route eats most of a day. For a relaxed trip covering one or two hill towns, plan six to seven days in total. A guided Mumbai to Himachal package can bundle the transfers so you do not lose time changing trains and buses.
