How to Reach Gulmarg from Chennai

There is no nonstop flight on this route, and in a straight line the distance is roughly 2,400 km. The rail answer is new. Until 2025 every guide sent you to Jammu Tawi and a 290 km road journey. Since the Kashmir rail link opened, the Andaman Express connects with the Vande Bharat into the Valley on the same afternoon. Below is each route with kilometres, train numbers, timings and what every leg costs a traveller starting from Chennai.

Chennai to Gulmarg Distance

How far Gulmarg is depends on how you go. By road it is roughly 2,930 to 3,050 km, depending on whether you route through Hyderabad and Nagpur or through Bengaluru and Kurnool before joining NH44. By rail, the Andaman Express covers 2,882 km from Chennai Central to Katra, and the Vande Bharat adds about 190 km from Katra to Srinagar. In a straight line Chennai to Gulmarg is about 2,400 km.

Every route finishes on the same stretch. Gulmarg is about 56 km from Srinagar city, 56 km from Srinagar airport and 55 to 60 km from Srinagar railway station at Nowgam, along the road through Magam and Tangmarg.

Chennai to Gulmarg by Flight

Gulmarg has no airport, so you fly from Chennai International Airport (MAA) to Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (SXR). There is no nonstop Chennai to Srinagar flight at present. Every itinerary has one stop, and there are about 89 one-stop options a week to choose from. IndiGo connects through Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad; Air India through Delhi and Mumbai; and Air India Express and Air India add a Bengaluru connection on some days.

Delhi is the connection to pick. It has the most onward flights into Srinagar, so a missed connection is easier to fix. The shortest itineraries take about 6 hours, and most land you in Srinagar 6 to 9 hours after leaving Chennai. Avoid two separate tickets with a tight self-transfer in winter, because Srinagar and Delhi both get fog delays from December to January.

Fares follow the Kashmir calendar more than Chennai's. Outside the holidays one-way fares start at about Rs 10,300 and typically sit near Rs 19,800, so book three to four weeks out. October is usually the cheapest month. For the Christmas and New Year snow rush, and for the May and June summer holidays, Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 is common, so book six to eight weeks ahead.

Pick a Chennai departure that lands in Srinagar before 2 pm. You still reach Gulmarg in daylight, which matters once there is snow above Tangmarg.

Fly to Jammu, Then the Vande Bharat

When Srinagar fares spike, or snow is holding flights out of the Valley, fly Chennai to Jammu (IXJ) instead, also with one stop. The 26403 Vande Bharat leaves Jammu Tawi at 13:20 every day except Wednesday and reaches Srinagar at 18:05. Stay the night in Srinagar and drive to Gulmarg after breakfast.

Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg: The Last 56 km

From Srinagar airport, Gulmarg is 56 km by road through Magam and Tangmarg, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours that stretches after fresh snow.

Private taxi from the airport taxi counter. A sedan costs about Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,800 one way, and an Innova or similar SUV costs more. Agree the fare before the bags go in.

From Srinagar city or the railway station. A one-way drop to Gulmarg is about Rs 2,600. These cabs stop at your hotel or the Gulmarg parking area, and local union taxis or ponies take over for sightseeing.

Shared cabs and buses. Shared sumos and JKRTC buses run from Srinagar to Tangmarg for Rs 150 to Rs 250 a seat, with another shared ride for the last 13 km. Cheap, but hard with large suitcases or ski bags.

Winter rule. After snowfall the authorities at Tangmarg allow only 4x4s or vehicles fitted with chains up the hill, and some advisories require chains on every vehicle. Registered vendors fit chains at Tangmarg, so plan on that stop even in a 4x4.

Chennai to Gulmarg by Train: Andaman Express and Vande Bharat

Gulmarg has no railway station. For years the nearest useful one was Jammu Tawi, 290 km away by road. That changed when the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link opened for passengers on 7 June 2025, and on 30 April 2026 the Vande Bharat was extended to run all the way from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar. For a Chennai traveller, the result is a two-train journey with no road leg until Srinagar:

1. Chennai Central to Katra. The 16031 Andaman Express leaves MGR Chennai Central at 05:10 on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It runs 2,882 km through Vijayawada, Nagpur, Bhopal and Delhi and reaches Jammu Tawi at 08:32 and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) at 11:50 on day 3, a 54 hour 40 minute run. Sleeper costs Rs 1,005, 3AC Rs 2,520 and 2AC Rs 3,645 to Katra.

2. Katra to Srinagar the same afternoon. The 26403 Vande Bharat calls at Katra at 14:55 and reaches Srinagar at 18:05, crossing the Chenab bridge and the Banihal tunnel. It skips Wednesdays, but the Andaman Express never reaches Katra on a Wednesday, so the connection works on all three departure days. Chair car seats from Katra launched at Rs 715.

3. A safer buffer. The Andaman Express is a long-distance train and can run late. Three hours at Katra usually covers it, but if you are worried, book the 26401 Vande Bharat the next morning (Katra about 08:10, Srinagar 11:10, not Tuesdays) and spend the night in Katra.

4. Night in Srinagar, Gulmarg next morning. You reach Srinagar after dark, so stay the night near Dal Lake and take a cab for the 55 to 60 km to Gulmarg after breakfast. A Sunday departure from Chennai puts you in Gulmarg by Wednesday lunchtime.

5. Book both trains together on IRCTC. Reservations open 60 days ahead. The Vande Bharat into the Valley sells out from April to June and December to January, so book the Andaman Express the day its window opens and the Vande Bharat two days later, when the window opens for your Katra date.

Carry home food for the first day, because pantry options thin out over a 54 hour run. Expect airport-style bag screening at Katra and Srinagar stations, and keep photo ID handy.

Chennai Rajdhani to Delhi, Then the Vande Bharat

If you would rather travel in AC 2-tier comfort with meals included, take the 12433 Chennai Rajdhani. It leaves Chennai Central at 06:05 on Fridays and Sundays and reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin at 10:30 the next day. Spend the night in Delhi, then catch the 22439 Vande Bharat from New Delhi at 06:00 (not Wednesdays), which reaches Katra at 14:20. The 26403 to Srinagar leaves Katra at 14:55, but that 35 minute change is too tight to rely on, so stay in Katra and take the morning Vande Bharat. Nearest Railway Station to Gulmarg

Srinagar station at Nowgam is the practical railhead, 55 to 60 km from Gulmarg, and it is where the Vande Bharat ends. Mazhom, near Magam, is closer by distance at about 30 to 35 km, but only local DEMU trains stop there. Baramulla, the end of the line, is about 53 km from Gulmarg. Jammu Tawi is no longer the right answer for anyone coming from Chennai.

Chennai to Gulmarg by Road

There is no bus from Chennai to Gulmarg, and no Tamil Nadu operator runs to Jammu and Kashmir. A bus-only trip means chaining Chennai to Delhi, Delhi to Jammu or Srinagar, and a shared cab beyond. It takes three days or more and is rarely cheaper than the Andaman Express.

Driving is possible but serious. It is about 2,950 km and 40 or more hours at the wheel, so plan five to six days. The usual line runs north through Vijayawada and Hyderabad to Nagpur, then NH44 through Jhansi, Agra, Delhi, Ambala, Jalandhar, Pathankot and Jammu, through the Banihal (Navyug) tunnel to Srinagar, and finally Magam and Tangmarg to Gulmarg. Sensible overnight stops are Hyderabad, Nagpur, Gwalior or Agra, Delhi and Jammu.

Budget about Rs 28,000 to Rs 35,000 per car one way for fuel and tolls. The Jammu to Srinagar stretch of NH44 can close for a day or more after heavy snow or landslides, so check the J&K Traffic Police advisory each morning, and drive only between May and October.

How Much Does Chennai to Gulmarg Cost?

The cheapest way is the train. The fastest is the flight. Here is what one person spends one way, before Gulmarg hotels:

The maths is different from shorter routes. For a family of four in October, flights at around Rs 12,300 each plus a cab come to about Rs 52,000, while the train in 3AC with a Srinagar hotel night and food comes to about Rs 22,000, a saving of about Rs 30,000. In late December, when flights reach Rs 18,000 or more each, the train saves close to Rs 50,000. The price is two and a half days each way, so it suits trips of ten days or longer.

Which Route Should You Choose?

Chennai to Gulmarg in One Day

It works only by air. Take a Chennai departure before 7 am with a short Delhi connection, land in Srinagar around lunchtime, and you can be at your Gulmarg hotel by late afternoon. If your flight lands after 2 pm, sleep in Srinagar and go up the next morning. A night at the lower altitude also helps, because Gulmarg sits at about 2,650 m and Chennai is at sea level.

Chennai to Kashmir Flight and Ticket Price

There is no nonstop Chennai to Kashmir flight. IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express fly Chennai to Srinagar with one stop, mostly via Delhi, in 6 to 9 hours. A one-way Chennai to Srinagar flight ticket starts at about Rs 10,300 off-peak and runs Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 over Christmas, New Year and the May to June holidays.

Chennai to Kashmir Train

No single train runs from Chennai to Kashmir. The Chennai to Kashmir train route is the 16031 Andaman Express from Chennai Central to Jammu Tawi or Katra (Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays), then the 26403 Vande Bharat to Srinagar the same afternoon. It is the only all-rail route, about 2.5 days in total, and a sleeper berth plus a Vande Bharat chair car from Katra costs about Rs 1,720 one way.

Best Time to Travel from Chennai to Gulmarg

December to March. Snow and the ski season. Flights cost the most and fog delays are likeliest, so leave a buffer day before your flight home. Chennai travellers are rarely packed for sub-zero mornings, so buy or rent proper thermals before you go.

April to June. Green meadows, pleasant days and Tamil Nadu's school holidays. Trains and flights are busiest, so book the Vande Bharat the day the window opens.

July and August. Green meadows with the odd shower, and usually the cheapest flights from Chennai. The Amarnath Yatra runs in these months, so expect convoy holds on the Jammu to Srinagar highway.

September to November. Clear skies, autumn colour and low fares until the Christmas rush starts.

Travel Tips for Chennai Travellers

Prepaid SIMs from Tamil Nadu do not work in Jammu and Kashmir. Carry a postpaid connection or buy a local SIM with ID in Srinagar.

Keep a fleece, gloves and a cap in your cabin bag. Srinagar is below zero on winter mornings while Chennai is at 30°C.

Carry a government photo ID. It is checked at the airport, at stations, on the highway and at hotels.

Withdraw cash in Srinagar. Gulmarg has only a handful of ATMs.

South Indian food is hard to find in Gulmarg. Carry ready-to-eat packs and snacks if you are a fussy eater.
