Srinagar to Gulmarg: Distance, Route, Taxi Fare and How to Reach

Those figures change depending on where you start. From Srinagar airport it is about 54 km, and from the railway station at Nowgam it is 55 to 60 km, because the station sits 8 km south of the city centre. Gulmarg has no bus terminal, airport or railway station of its own, so every option below ends on the same hairpin road above Tangmarg. From December to March that last stretch is under snow, and it decides how long your trip takes.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Route

The road leaves Srinagar through Parimpora or Batamaloo and runs north-west across flat paddy fields and apple orchards. It is a good two-lane road for the first 38 km, which is why most of the time is lost in the city and on the final climb, not in between.

Tangmarg is where the trip changes character. It has the fuel pumps, ATMs and the shops that rent snow boots and long coats in winter, and it is where shared cabs, buses and (after snowfall) chain fitters all wait. Above it, the 13 km ghat climbs about 600 m to the Gulmarg gate. The short detour to Drung Waterfall turns off just before Tangmarg and is worth 30 minutes in January, when the falls partly freeze. Mobile signal is good up to Tangmarg and patchy on the hairpins. Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work here, so arrange a postpaid connection or a local SIM before you leave Srinagar.

Srinagar to Gulmarg by Taxi

A private cab is the easiest door-to-door option, and the only practical one for families, early Gondola starts and day trips. Book through your hotel, the prepaid counter at the airport, or the taxi stands at Dal Gate and the Tourist Reception Centre. Fares follow the Kashmir taxi union rate card, though drivers will negotiate in the quiet months.

These are 2026-27 ranges from the Kashmir taxi union list. Expect 15 to 25 per cent more over Christmas, New Year and the late-May to June rush, and agree the full price before you get in. Three things to settle with the driver:

Whether the fare covers parking and any entry charge at Gulmarg.

Whether the quote is "up to Gulmarg" or "up to Tangmarg" in winter, and whether the driver carries chains.

On a day trip, how long the driver will wait. Six to seven hours is normal on a return fare.

One local rule surprises first-timers. A Srinagar cab drops you at your hotel or the main parking in Gulmarg, but sightseeing inside Gulmarg (Gondola base, Strawberry Valley, Khilanmarg trail heads) runs on Gulmarg's own union taxis and ponies. Budget for that separately.

Srinagar to Gulmarg by Shared Taxi

Shared Sumos, Taveras and Boleros are the budget traveller's best bet. Locally they are called "service gaadi", and asking for a "shared cab" can draw a blank look. The trip is done in two legs:

1. Take an auto or local cab from Dal Gate or Lal Chowk to the Batamaloo or Parimpora stand.

2. Board a service gaadi to Tangmarg (about Rs 100 a seat). If none is filling for Tangmarg, take one to Magam and change there.

3. At Tangmarg market, switch to a shared cab for the last 13 km to Gulmarg (about Rs 50 to Rs 100 a seat).

4. Get off at the Gulmarg taxi stand near the gate and walk or take a pony to your hotel.

The total comes to about Rs 150 to Rs 250 a person and 2.5 to 4 hours, most of it spent waiting for seats to fill. Cabs start running around 7 am and thin out by mid-afternoon. With heavy bags or in snow, the savings rarely justify the hassle.

Srinagar to Gulmarg by Bus

There is no scheduled direct public bus from Srinagar to Gulmarg. Local buses and minibuses run from Batamaloo and Parimpora as far as Tangmarg market, and a shared cab or jeep covers the last 13 km. The buses leave when full, not to a timetable. The bus leg costs under Rs 100, there is no AC bus, and door to door you should allow 3 to 5 hours.

JKRTC (still widely called JKSRTC) runs seasonal tourist and sightseeing coaches from the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar. The service is not daily year-round, so book a day ahead at the TRC counter and confirm that day's departure. In winter the traffic police stop buses and heavy vehicles at Tangmarg, which makes the shared cab for the final climb compulsory.

Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg

Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) is about 54 km from Gulmarg, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive. There is no bus or shared cab from the terminal. Take the prepaid taxi from the arrivals hall (sedan about Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,800, SUV Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,800) or a pre-booked transfer. To save money, take a prepaid cab to Batamaloo and switch to shared cabs there.

In winter, land by early afternoon if you want to reach Gulmarg the same day. Light fades by 5 pm in December, tourist vehicles are allowed on the Tangmarg stretch only between 8 am and 6 pm during snow advisories, and nobody enjoys fitting chains in the dark. If your flight lands after about 2 pm, stay a night in Srinagar and go up the next morning.

Srinagar Railway Station to Gulmarg

Since the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla line opened on 7 June 2025, trains run into the Valley. The Vande Bharat from Jammu Tawi and Katra ends at Srinagar (Nowgam): the 26401 leaves Jammu Tawi at 06:20 and arrives at 11:10 (not Tuesdays), and the 26403 leaves at 13:20 and arrives at 18:05 (not Wednesdays). From Nowgam, a taxi to Gulmarg covers 55 to 60 km in about 2 hours, and there is a prepaid taxi booth outside the station.

Mazhom halt, near Magam, is the closest station to Gulmarg at about 30 to 35 km, but only local DEMU trains between Banihal and Baramulla stop there and onward cabs are scarce. Self-Drive and Bike from Srinagar to Gulmarg

Driving yourself is easy in summer: 51 km, a good road as far as Tangmarg, and no permits. Self-drive cars and bikes are rented in Srinagar, with a Royal Enfield going for around Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 a day. Fill up in Srinagar or Tangmarg, drive the ghat in daylight, and park at the designated parking near the Gondola base. Read your rental contract closely in winter: many Srinagar agencies do not allow their cars above Tangmarg when there is snow, and a two-wheeler on a chained, icy hairpin is a bad idea for anyone who has not ridden in snow before.

Summer has its own rule. From 5 July to 5 August 2026 the Gulmarg Development Authority piloted odd-even entry for private and commercial four-wheelers, 8 am to 8 pm: cars with an odd last digit on their number plate enter on odd dates, even digits on even dates. If you are driving up in peak summer, check whether the rule is back in force for your dates, and remember that taxis and private cars come under it too.

Srinagar to Gulmarg in Winter (December to March)

This is the section most people actually need, because the winter months are when Gulmarg is busiest and the last 13 km stops behaving like a normal road. Taxi or self-drive, check road conditions the evening before and plan around these rules:

After snowfall, only 4x4s or vehicles with anti-skid chains go past Tangmarg; SDM Gulmarg and the Baramulla Traffic Police enforce this on the climb. Some advisories require chains on every vehicle, 4x4s included, so plan on the chain stop even in an SUV.

Registered vendors at the Tangmarg parking fit chains for about Rs 600 a pair under the SDM advisory. Agree the price before fitting starts.

Expect the Tangmarg switch in heavy-snow spells: many Srinagar drivers stop at Tangmarg and you finish in a local Tangmarg 4x4, about Rs 1,600 for a drop or Rs 2,500 for a same-day return. A Srinagar cab to Tangmarg alone runs about Rs 2,300. Ask your operator in writing which of the two you are paying for.

Allow 2.5 to 3 hours or more, and longer on weekends. Buses and heavy vehicles are stopped at Tangmarg, and tourist vehicles run only between 8 am and 6 pm when advisories are in force.

The road can close for a few hours, occasionally a day, during heavy snowfall or snow clearance. Leave a buffer day before a flight out of Srinagar.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Day Trip Plan

A day trip works if you start early. Gondola tickets are sold only online, peak-season slots sell out days ahead, and the Gondola usually shuts on the second and fourth Monday of the month, so book before you set off. Gulmarg to Srinagar (Return)

The return is the same 51 km and 1.5 to 2 hours. Taxis wait at the stand near the Gulmarg gate, and a one-way drop to Srinagar costs the same as the trip up. Shared cabs go down to Tangmarg, where you change for Batamaloo or Parimpora. The last reliable shared cabs leave Tangmarg in the late afternoon, so in winter be on the road down by 2:30 pm.
