Bagh-e-Bahu Timings & Entry Fee, Jammu
Rejuvenate and relax at the incredible Bagh-e-Bahu
Rated 4.36/5 ( based on 3988 reviews )
Best Time to Visit Bagh-e-Bahu, Jammu
Bagh-e-Bahu, the terraced garden below Bahu Fort in Jammu, is open every day, and the garden gates run from 6 AM to 8 PM. The catch is that three different things people visit for keep three different clocks inside the same complex: the garden itself, India's biggest underground aquarium, and the evening musical fountain (light-and-sound) show. The table below gives each one's hours and entry fee in one place, then the sections beneath it clear up the timing people get wrong most, the difference between the garden, the old Bahu Fort, and the Bawe Wali Mata temple inside it. For a fuller walk-through of the site, see the Bagh-e-Bahu overview.
Bagh-e-Bahu timings at a glance
Every part of the complex is open all week. Here is what runs when, and what it costs.
| Section | Timings (daily) | Entry fee | Best time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bagh-e-Bahu garden | 6 AM to 8 PM | Rs 5 to Rs 25 per person | Late afternoon into evening |
| Underground aquarium | About 10 AM to 7 PM | Rs 100 per adult, Rs 30 per child (up to 10 years) | Any dry day, allow 45 to 60 min |
| Light-and-sound / musical fountain show | From about 7 PM (after dusk) | About Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person | Evenings, best on weekends |
| Bahu Fort (adjacent) | About 6 AM to 8 PM (opens early for temple-goers) | Free | Morning |
| Bawe Wali Mata temple (in fort) | 6 AM to 8:30 PM | Free | Tuesday and Sunday are busiest |
Civic timings and fees change with the season and for events, so confirm on the day. For the full fee breakdown by section, see our Bagh-e-Bahu entry fee page.
Entry fee and ticket prices
The garden itself is almost free. Expect to pay Rs 5 to Rs 25 per person at the gate, with children usually charged less. Two things cost extra and are worth planning around. The underground aquarium is a separate ticket: the J&K government's September 2024 fee order sets it at Rs 100 per adult and Rs 30 per child up to 10 years. Ask at the counter whether a camera charge applies on top. The evening light-and-sound show at the fountains is the priciest add-on at roughly Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person. Carry small cash; the counters near the aquarium and the show can be slow with cards. Full, current rates by section are on our entry fee page.
Underground aquarium: timings, fee and what to see
The aquarium is the reason most first-timers put Bagh-e-Bahu on the list, and it opens later than the garden, at about 10 AM, closing with the complex around 7 PM. It is billed as India's largest underground aquarium: 24 tank-caves built into the slope, holding more than 400 species, from piranha and shark catfish to neon jewel and carp. Budget 45 minutes to an hour to walk the full loop, longer on a weekend when the corridors fill up. Entry is Rs 100 for adults and Rs 30 for children up to 10. Photos are allowed, but the light is low and glass reflects, so a phone shot works better held flat against the tank. Go on a weekday morning if you want the tanks mostly to yourself.
Light-and-sound / musical fountain show: evening timings
The musical fountain show is why the garden stays open into the evening. It starts after dusk, from about 7 PM, once the light has dropped enough for the coloured fountains to read against the dark. A single show runs roughly 30 to 40 minutes, and the seat, about Rs 100 to Rs 150, is separate from the garden ticket. This is the one part of the visit with a hard start time, so plan the rest of the afternoon around it: finish the aquarium in daylight, walk the terraces at golden hour, then take your seat before the first sequence. Weekends draw the biggest crowds and the fullest shows.
Bagh-e-Bahu vs Bahu Fort and Bawe Wali Mata temple: timings clarified
Most of the confusion online comes from three timings for what people think is one place. They are three neighbours on the same hill above the Tawi River, and they do not keep the same hours. Bagh-e-Bahu is the garden and aquarium complex, open 6 AM to 8 PM. Bahu Fort, the centuries-old fort right beside it (rebuilt in 1585 and again under Maharaja Gulab Singh in the 19th century), opens early for temple-goers, from around 6 AM, and closes around 8 PM, and entry to the fort is free. Inside the fort walls is the Bawe Wali Mata temple (also called Mahakali), where darshan runs longer, about 6 AM to 8:30 PM, and Tuesdays and Sundays are the busy days. So if a search result quotes a different opening time, check which of the three it means. The temple runs latest, to about 8:30 PM; inside the garden, the fountain show is the last thing on each evening. For the head-term details on the site as a whole, the Bagh-e-Bahu overview covers history and things to do.
Best time to visit and how to reach
The best time of year is March to April, when the terraces are in bloom and the evenings are mild enough to sit through the fountain show without a jacket. October and November are the next best window. Summer afternoons in Jammu get hot, so from May to July come after 5 PM and let the aquarium and the show carry the visit. For the best time of day, aim to arrive by late afternoon: daylight for the aquarium and terraces, then the show at dusk. Getting there is easy. Bagh-e-Bahu sits about 5 km from Jammu city centre on the left bank of the Tawi River, a 15 to 20 minute auto or taxi ride. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, and the nearest airport is Jammu (IXJ). If you are planning a wider J&K trip, our Kashmir tour packages and the Jammu travel guide pair Bagh-e-Bahu with the Vaishno Devi shrine and the old city.
How we check these timings
The hours and fees on this page are checked by our Jammu travel desk against Jammu Municipal Corporation and on-site sources. Civic bodies revise them for seasons and for festival days such as Bahu Mela, so we re-confirm each visit season. Aquarium rates follow the J&K government fee order of September 2024. A tip our Jammu desk repeats to travellers: reach the garden by 6 PM so you finish the aquarium in daylight and are seated for the fountain show as the lights come on.

Jammu Travel FAQs
What are the timings of Bagh-e-Bahu in Jammu?
Bagh-e-Bahu garden is open every day from 6 AM to 8 PM. The underground aquarium inside runs a shorter window, about 10 AM to 7 PM, and the evening light-and-sound show starts after dusk, from around 7 PM. Timings shift a little by season, so confirm on the day of your visit.
What is the entry fee for Bagh-e-Bahu?
Garden entry is nominal, about Rs 5 to Rs 25 per person. The underground aquarium is a separate ticket, set at Rs 100 per adult and Rs 30 per child up to 10 years by the J&K government's September 2024 fee order. The evening musical fountain show costs about Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person. See the entry fee page for the current section-by-section rates.
What are the underground aquarium timings and fee?
The aquarium opens at about 10 AM and closes near 7 PM, within the garden hours. Entry is Rs 100 per adult and Rs 30 per child up to 10 years. It is India's largest underground aquarium, with 24 tank-caves and more than 400 species, and you need 45 minutes to an hour to see it all.
Is Bagh-e-Bahu open all days of the week?
Yes. The garden, the aquarium and the fountain show run all seven days, including weekends. There is no fixed weekly closing day. Timings can change for major festival days such as Bahu Mela, so check ahead if you are visiting around a festival.
What time is the light-and-sound / musical fountain show?
The musical fountain (light-and-sound) show starts after dusk, from about 7 PM, when the light has dropped enough for the coloured fountains to show. A show runs roughly 30 to 40 minutes and costs about Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person, separate from the garden ticket. Weekends have the biggest crowds.
Is photography allowed in the aquarium?
Yes, photos are allowed. Ask at the ticket counter whether a separate camera charge applies, since the official fee order lists only the entry fee. The light inside is low and the glass reflects, so hold your phone flat against the tank for the clearest shot.
Are Bagh-e-Bahu and Bahu Fort the same? What are the fort timings?
They are neighbours, not the same place. Bagh-e-Bahu is the garden and aquarium complex (6 AM to 8 PM). Bahu Fort is the centuries-old fort beside it (rebuilt in 1585), open from around 6 AM, early for temple-goers, to about 8 PM, with free entry, and the Bawe Wali Mata temple inside the fort has darshan from around 6 AM to 8:30 PM. That is why you see different opening times quoted for what looks like one site.
What is the best time of day to visit Bagh-e-Bahu?
Come in the late afternoon. You get daylight for the aquarium and the terraced gardens, golden-hour light for photos, and you are in place for the fountain show at dusk. For the season, March to April is best for the blooms, with October and November a close second.
How much time do you need at Bagh-e-Bahu?
Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours for the garden and the aquarium together. Add another 30 to 40 minutes if you are staying for the evening fountain show. On a weekend, add a little more for queues at the aquarium and the show.
How do I reach Bagh-e-Bahu from Jammu city?
Bagh-e-Bahu is about 5 km from Jammu city centre, on the left bank of the Tawi River, a 15 to 20 minute auto or taxi ride. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi and the nearest airport is Jammu (IXJ). It pairs naturally with a Vaishno Devi and Jammu itinerary, covered in our Jammu travel guide.
