Cherai Beach Timings, Opening Hours and Entry Fee (2026)
Indulge in fun watersports and rejuvenate yourself at the popular Cherai Beach
Rated 4.30/5 ( based on 17008 reviews )
Cherai Beach is a free public beach on Vypeen Island, about 25 km north of Kochi city, and it has no ticket counter and no fixed timings. The shoreline stays open around the clock, so there is nothing to open or close. Most visitors come between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, the window when the lifeguards are on duty and the water sports run, and then again for the sunset. If you only want the short version, here it is.

Cherai Beach timings and opening hours
There are no gate timings at Cherai Beach. It is an open stretch of the Arabian Sea coast, not a ticketed park, so you can walk onto the sand at any hour of any day. Half the pages online quote a flat "9 am to 6 pm", and that number is real, but it is not a closing time. It is the window when the beach is at its most useful: lifeguards watch the water, the shacks are open, and the water-sports operators run their jet skis, banana boats and speedboats. Backwater boating on the calmer eastern side can usually be booked from about 6:00 am. Come before 9 or after 6 and the beach is still open, just quieter, with fewer people and no one minding the water.
Is Cherai Beach open today, right now?
Yes. Cherai Beach is open today and it is open right now, the same as every other day of the year. Because it is a free public beach with no entry gate, there is no "closed on Mondays" or seasonal shutdown to catch you out. You can visit at night too, and many people do for a quiet walk, but the lifeguards go off duty and the shacks wind down after dark, so daytime is the safer bet if you plan to get in the water. For a full picture of the beach beyond its hours, see the full Cherai Beach guide.
Is there an entry fee for Cherai Beach?
No. Entry to Cherai Beach is free, and there is no ticket to buy at the shore. The only things you pay for are the extras. A jet-ski or banana-boat ride, a speedboat trip or a backwater cruise each carry their own charge, set by the operator on the day. If you drive down, budget for a small parking fee near the main entrance. For the full breakdown of ride and parking costs, see the Cherai Beach entry fees page.
Best time to visit Cherai Beach
Two windows are worth timing your visit for. Early morning, roughly 6:00 am to 8:00 am, is when the beach is quiet, the light is soft and, on a good day, dolphins surface just off the shore. The other is the last hour before sunset, which is what Cherai is known for: the beach faces west, so the sun drops straight into the sea. Aim to be on the sand by about 5:30 pm to catch it.
Across the year, October to February is the season to come. The monsoon has passed, the sea is calmer and the days are dry and warm, which is exactly why the beach is busiest and the water sports run most reliably in those months. June to September brings heavy rain and a rougher sea, and swimming is often unsafe. To plan the trip around it, browse things to do in Kochi or a Kerala tour package.
Is it safe to swim, and when do the water sports run?
Cherai has a shallow, gently shelving stretch that is calmer than most Kerala beaches, which is why families wade in here. It is still the open sea, so currents change with the tide and the season. Swim inside the flagged area during the daylight, lifeguarded window, keep young children in the shallows, and stay out of the water on rough-sea days in the monsoon.
The water sports operate roughly 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, weather permitting, and each ride is priced separately at the counter. Jet skis, banana-boat rides and speedboat trips run on the sea side; the calmer backwaters behind the beach are better for a slow cruise and are where the dolphin-spotting trips at Cherai set off. Planning a Cherai Beach trip
Cherai works best as a day out from Kochi or as a calm end to a Kerala tour. If you would rather have the transfers, stay and water sports arranged for you, browse Kerala tour packages, or read the complete Cherai Beach guide and Kerala travel guide to build the rest of the itinerary.

Kochi Travel FAQs
What are the opening and closing times of Cherai Beach?
There are no fixed opening or closing times. Cherai is a free public beach with no gate, so it is open 24 hours a day, every day. The often-quoted "9:00 am to 6:00 pm" is the favoured window when lifeguards are on duty and the water sports run, not a closing time.
Is there an entry fee for Cherai Beach?
No. Entry to the beach is free and there is no ticket counter. You only pay for extras such as water-sports rides, boat trips and parking, each priced separately by the operator.
Is Cherai Beach open at night or 24 hours?
Yes, the shoreline is open around the clock and you can walk on it at night. The lifeguards go off duty and the shacks close after dark, though, so daytime is the safer time if you want to go in the water.
Is Cherai Beach open today?
Yes. Being a free public beach, Cherai is open today and every day of the year, including Sundays and public holidays. There is no weekly closing day.
What is the best time to visit Cherai Beach?
Early morning, around 6:00 am to 8:00 am, for a quiet beach and possible dolphin sightings, or the last hour before sunset for the view. Across the year, October to February is the best season, when the sea is calm and the days are dry.
Is it safe to swim at Cherai Beach?
It is one of the calmer, shallower Kerala beaches, so it is popular for a wade. Stay inside the flagged, lifeguarded area during daylight, keep children in the shallows, and avoid the water on rough monsoon days.
Do water sports have separate charges and timings?
Yes. Jet skis, banana-boat rides, speedboats and backwater cruises are each charged per ride at the counter and generally run from about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, weather permitting. They are not covered by any entry fee, because there isn't one.
Is Cherai Beach open on Sundays and public holidays?
Yes, it is open on Sundays and every public holiday. Weekends and holidays are the busiest times, so mornings are best if you want a quieter beach.
