Information about Kathmandu

Kathmandu is not only the capital of Nepal but also its central spire of culture, heritage, art, economy, and tourism.

Because of its charming appeal and also because Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal tourism has become possible and convenient for the travelers from around the world. Do not get fooled by the contemporary urban fabric of the city. If you consult a Kathmandu travel guide before coming, you can see there have been excavations to prove that Kathmandu has stood since the first century AD. Moreover, within the main city, there are seven UNESCO World Heritage sites that include both Hindu and Buddhist heritage sites.

Here are a few pieces of Kathmandu tourist information to help out the travelers:

Weather in Kathmandu:

Kathmandu weather is subtropical in nature. Except for a few stray occasions, over the years, the city has experienced soothing, pleasant summers and winters. It does not get too hot in the summers. The average temperature is around 28-30°C. It is quite mild compared to what the Indian plains just south of Nepal experiences. The winters are cold, with average temperature hovering around 10°C. But it does not go below the freezing point usually. An important Kathmandu travel tip would be to travel between the summers and winters – that is autumn and spring, from March to early May and from September to November.

Nightlife in Kathmandu:

Nightlife in Kathmandu is a happening and sizzling one. Bars and clubs are at large in the Thamel District. A marketplace by the day, the place comes alive with its multiple options for night-time festivities as the sun goes down. One can find all varieties of clubs, restaurants and bars here – Irish pubs, Mayan-themed bars, New Orleans style jazz and blues. Rum Doodle is a must-visit among the lot, because of its history. This is where every Mount Everest climber comes to celebrate their feat. Ason Bazar is a good night-time market to shop from. Another part of Kathmandu nightlife is the casinos –Casino Royale, Casino Everest, and Casino Mahjong are three of the best. Carry a Kathmandu map with you to find the best places.

Food in Kathmandu:

Nepalese food is strongly influenced by the Indian and Tibetan cuisines, but it has its own flavors as well. Dal Chawal is the most common food consumed here, says any Kathmandu tour guide. In the restaurants, one can get it in platter style that comes with salads, papad and vegetable curries or meat dishes. The Newars have their own cuisine and Chatamari, which looks like pizza, is a popular food. Popular Tibetan food Thupka is famous here, and so are masu dishes, which are basically spicy curries, made of chicken, lamb or pork.

Shopping in Kathmandu:

Thamel is the best place to buy cheap products on the Kathmandu guide map. Casual garments, local artifacts, trinkets and souvenirs, bags, watches, accessories, and even trekking gears are found here. Among special items, there are Pashmina shawls, Nepalese dagger or kukris, thangkas, Tibetan curios and silver wares are common. For more posh experiences, one can go for Civil Mall or King’s Road with all the top-notch international brands. The Civil Mall has a multiplex and bowling alley as well. Bhatbhateni Super Market is another place, which is the literal definition of all-things-under-one-roof.

Festivals in Kathmandu:

Kathmandu, in general, celebrates all the Hindu and Buddhist holidays and festivals. Lhosar or Buddhist New Year, Buddha Jayanti, Holi, Dashain or Dussehra, and Tihar or Diwali are the most celebrated ones. Ghode Yatra is a festival unique to the valley, marked by various horse parades, functions, and acrobats performed by Nepalese army. To find out more information about Kathmandu festivals, you have to follow their yearly scheduled by the government.

Aravind's 8 days trip to kathmandu

The coordinator did a great job overall but could have been more attentive. There was some confusion with the itinerary, but it was managed well. Hotels (Ama la - Thamel, Kathmandu ; Tuki resort, Pokhara ; De Purang, Muktinath ; Rain forest, Chitwan) all were good. The food was best in Chitwan. Thanks for the great memories - Amit. Good job.

Arulak's 8 days trip to kathmandu

Travel agents in some places provide lower categories of hotels even though better accommodation available. Picking up at the airport should be rightly maintained. Also the facilities available in any place of visit to be rightly mentioned in the program. The trip was wonderful journey with a friendly Driver cum Guide Mr Balaram. He satisfied all our needs and queries.

Vagesh's 5 days trip to kathmandu

Overall things were planned fine. Just had hiccups when our force traveller developed some issues and had problematic travel to Pokhara without air conditioning on which annoyed the travellers. On next days however , they managed to provide an alternative vehicle to avoid facing the issue again. Mankamna temple gondola ride

Guptaankita's 6 days trip to kathmandu

Big thanks to MD Adventure travel and tours and especially to Shabu who went above and beyond her role, for making our Nepal trip super smooth and stress-free! She was always just a call away—even on the eve of the Nepali New Year. She welcomed us at the airport with a big smile and handled everything so well, even when rain messed up our itinerary. Really appreciate her support and flexibility throughout the trip! If u are planning a trip to nepal do it through them. Highly recommended.

Bedanta's 6 days trip to kathmandu

Every thing is well organised. Driver niranjan is very humble and helpful. Always on time. Hotels are good, clean and food is also good. Hotel shangrila nagarkot is spacious with a great view of the mountain and sunrise can be seen from the bed itself . Hotel lake paradise is overall good but all electric sockets are non functional in both the rooms but extension board was arranged by the hotel staff which is great help. All the hotels are clean staff are helpful. Hotel Taleju in kathmandu is good. Car given to us is actually a chinese made electric van which they called a luxury van with no view of outside and poor suspension. It requires charging twice on route to Pokhara and Kathmandu. Power cut in charging station is frequent and long queue makes it a very impractical vehicle for tourists who visit for leisure. Driver tried his best to keep us comfortable during the journey. Owner of the agency get offended when I compared the Chinese van with Maruti eco. But actually the van is poor in suspension then eco and cant see anything outside. According to them if the seats are reclining it comes under luxury category.. actually its not their fault the agency already sent the pictures of the vehicle at the time of booking but I mistook it by its look with the luxury tourist van that are used in other South East Asian countries. These vehicles may be a good option only after the highway construction and is completed.

Sprahlad's 7 days trip to kathmandu

Hotels booked were unaware about accommodation to be provided. They tried to allot 3 rooms instead of 2 rooms with extra bed in one.Agency should be able to accept changes in itinerary. Road from Nagarkot to Lumbini was very bad.
