Kashmir 5 Nights 6 Days Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar | Mughal Gardens and Hazratbal

Our representative or driver will greet you on your arrival at Srinagar and take you the 14 km to Hotel Grand Ibni Gani for check-in. After you freshen up, head out to the Mughal gardens on the eastern shore of Dal Lake. Nishat Bagh, laid out in 1633 by Asif Khan, brother of Empress Nur Jahan, climbs in terraces towards the Zabarwan hills. Shalimar Bagh, built by Emperor Jahangir for Nur Jahan, is a few minutes further on. Chashme Shahi is the smallest of the three and is built around a natural spring whose water locals still bottle. Finish at the white marble Hazratbal Shrine on the lake's north-western shore. Cover your head and shoulders before you go in. If your flight lands late, Hazratbal can move to the Day 6 morning. Dinner and overnight stay in Srinagar.

Day 2: Sonamarg Day Trip | Thajiwas Glacier

Have breakfast at the hotel, then drive about 80 km up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg, the Meadow of Gold, in 2.5 to 3 hours. The road follows the Sindh river through Kangan, and the last stretch opens onto a wide meadow ringed by glaciers at around 2,700 m. Sonamarg is also the base for the high-altitude lake treks to Vishansar and Gangabal, which need a separate trekking plan. From the parking area, the Thajiwas Glacier is about 3 km. Walk it, or hire a pony from the official stand and agree the rate before you mount. Snow usually lingers near the glacier into early summer, and sledge pullers wait at the snow line. Pony and sledge charges are paid directly. In summer, local Sonamarg taxis also run beyond Baltal to Zero Point, at extra cost. Start back by 4 pm and you reach Srinagar by about 7 pm for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Srinagar to Pahalgam | Saffron Fields and the Lidder Valley

Check out after breakfast for the 95 km drive south-east to Pahalgam, 2.5 to 3 hours with stops. Within half an hour you pass the saffron fields of Pampore, which flower purple from late October to mid-November. Stop at the Avantipora ruins, two stone temples built by King Avantivarman in the 9th century. After Anantnag, the road picks up the Lidder River and follows it into Pahalgam, a pine-forested town at about 2,200 m. Check in to Lidder Spring Resorts at Yanner Bridge, have lunch, and walk the Lidder from the main bridge. Beyond town, three valleys are reached only by Pahalgam union taxi, paid locally. Betaab Valley, about 8 km up the Chandanwari road, was once Hagan valley and took its name from the 1983 film shot there. Aru Valley, about 12 km away, is the base for the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake treks. Chandanwari, about 16 km, is where the Amarnath Yatra route begins. With one afternoon, pick Betaab or Aru. Dinner and overnight stay in Pahalgam.

Day 4: Pahalgam to Gulmarg via Srinagar

Wake up early for check-out. There is no direct road between Pahalgam and Gulmarg, so today's drive runs back through Srinagar and then west through Tangmarg, about 140 to 150 km and 4 to 5 hours with a tea stop. Leave by 8 am and you reach Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, by early afternoon. Check in to Fluorescence Hotel on the Khilan side, then walk the meadow at about 2,650 m. St. Mary's Church, built in 1902, sits at its edge, and the golf course here is one of the highest in the world. A pony ride along the meadow is easy to arrange and paid directly. From December to March the bowl is under snow, and you can try sledging, but the last stretch from Tangmarg may need a chained vehicle at extra cost. Dinner and overnight stay in Gulmarg.

Day 5: Gulmarg Gondola and a Nigeen Lake Houseboat

Be at the Gondola base right after breakfast, when the queues are shortest. The Gulmarg Gondola has 2 phases. Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori at about 3,080 m, and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat at about 3,980 m, where snow lies even in May. Tickets are not included and are sold online only on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed. Phase 2 has fewer seats and stops in high wind. After lunch, drive about 50 km back to Srinagar in 1.5 to 2 hours and check in to Peacock Houseboats on Nigeen Lake, which is quieter than the Dal. In the evening, take the included shikara ride across Nigeen Lake, past lotus beds and floating gardens. A longer ride into the Dal is paid to the boatman. Dinner and overnight stay on the houseboat.

Day 6: Shankaracharya and Departure

Have breakfast on the houseboat's veranda, then take the shikara back to the ghat. If your flight is in the afternoon, drive up to the Shankaracharya Temple, about 240 steps up a hill, for the whole lake and city spread out below. Phones and cameras are not allowed past the security gate, so leave them in the cab. The other option is shopping for saffron, walnuts, papier-mâché and pashmina in the old city or on Polo View. Your driver then drops you at Srinagar airport. Reach it about 2.5 hours before departure, because cars and bags are checked at an outer gate before the terminal.

Know Before You Go

• Book Gondola tickets online the day your trip is confirmed.

• Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the valley. Carry a postpaid connection.

• Carry a government photo ID. Hotels, houseboats and checkpoints all ask for it.

• Keep cash for the Pahalgam union taxi and the Thajiwas ponies. Card machines are rare above the parking areas.

• Leave Pahalgam by 8 am on Day 4. The Srinagar bypass slows down after 11 am.
