Once you add Manali and the Kullu valley, plan for 6 nights and 7 days from Mumbai: two nights around Shimla and Kufri, three around Manali for the Atal Tunnel, Solang and Hadimba, plus the travel days at each end. If you want to fold in the Parvati valley (Kasol and Manikaran) or an overnight at Sissu, add a day.

How To Reach Shimla And Manali From Mumbai

By air. There is no direct flight, train or state bus from Mumbai straight to Shimla or Manali. The quickest route is a non-stop flight from Mumbai to Chandigarh (IXC), roughly 2 to 3 hours, and Chandigarh is the gateway airport for both hill stations. From Chandigarh, Shimla is about 113 km by road (near 4 hours by bus, closer to 3 by cab), and you can also take the Kalka to Shimla toy train for the last stretch. Manali is a longer haul from Chandigarh, about 310 km and 8 to 9 hours through Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu.

By train. If you prefer rail, board a Mumbai to New Delhi train (about 1,500 km, 15 to 16 hours), then continue on the Delhi to Kalka line and change to the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla toy train. There is no direct Delhi to Shimla train, so the toy train is both the practical connection and the most scenic one. Reaching Manali by rail means the same Delhi leg, then an overnight road journey.

The Manali Circuit: Atal Tunnel, Solang, Rohtang, Hadimba And Manikaran

Manali is where a Shimla Manali trip earns its second half, and the highlights sit close together so two full days cover them well. Here is what to build the Manali leg around.

Atal Tunnel and Sissu. The 9.02 km Atal Tunnel opened in October 2020 and cuts under the Rohtang ridge, so Sissu and the Lahaul valley are now reachable in under an hour from Manali, all year, even when the pass above is shut. Sissu's waterfall and the Chandra river flats are the usual half-day stop.

Solang Valley. About 14 km from Manali at roughly 2,560 m, Solang is the adventure meadow: paragliding and zorbing in the warm months, snow and cable-car rides once it turns white in December.

Rohtang Pass. At about 3,980 m, Rohtang is the classic snow excursion, but it is seasonal (broadly May to October) and needs a permit, with a daily vehicle cap. When it is closed, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu is the year-round substitute for snow and high-mountain views.

Hadimba, Vashisht and Old Manali. The 1553 Hadimba Devi temple sits in a deodar grove in the town itself; Vashisht adds natural hot-spring baths, and Old Manali is the cafe-and-riverside end of the day.

Manikaran and Kasol. An hour south into the Parvati valley, Manikaran Sahib is known for its hot sulphur springs and the gurudwara and temple beside them; nearby Kasol is the riverside base most people pair it with. Kullu, on the way, is the stop for shawls and the Beas riverbank.

Shimla Highlights: Mall Road, Kufri And The Toy Train

Shimla is the softer, more walkable half of the trip. The Ridge and Mall Road are the heart of it, with Christ Church and the Scandal Point promenade; Jakhoo temple sits above the town, and Kufri (about 2,720 m) is the short excursion for viewpoints and, in winter, sledging. The single most distinctive way in is the Kalka to Shimla toy train: 96 km of narrow gauge over more than 800 bridges and around 900 curves, a UNESCO World Heritage line since 2008, with fares that stay modest at roughly Rs 50 to Rs 600.

Best Time To Visit Shimla And Manali

Spring (Mar to Apr). Shimla runs about 16 C to 30 C, with green valleys and the Shimla Spring Festival in late April. A calm, clear window for both cities.

Summer (May to Jun). Peak season and the reason most families come: mild days around 16 C to 30 C, Rohtang usually open, and full access to Solang. Book early.

Monsoon (Jul to Sep). Cooler and green, 13 C to 20 C in Shimla, but hill roads can see landslides, so keep the itinerary flexible and pad your travel days.

Winter (Dec to Feb). Snow country. Shimla can drop from about 10 C to minus 7 C; Solang and Manali get reliable snowfall, and the Atal Tunnel keeps Sissu reachable when Rohtang is shut. Pack heavy woolens.
