How To Reach Manali From Mumbai (2026)

Mumbai to Manali-33.0 hours--

Distances, timings and fares below are drawn from the Mumbai to Manali itineraries our travel experts plan every season. Fares move with demand, so treat them as planning bands, not fixed quotes.

Planning how to reach Manali from Mumbai comes down to one fact: no flight, train or bus runs the whole way. Manali sits about 1,950 to 2,000 km north of Mumbai, deep in Himachal Pradesh, and the final stretch has to be covered by road. Almost everyone travelling from Mumbai flies or takes a train to Delhi or Chandigarh first, then continues to Manali by cab or bus. This guide breaks down every option by distance, time and cost, names the actual trains and airports you will use, and helps you pick the route that fits your budget and your group.

Mumbai to Manali at a Glance: Distance, Time and Cost

There are three sensible ways to cover the Mumbai to Manali route, plus a self-drive option for people who love the road. Here is how they compare, per person, one way.

Route Distance Total time Approx cost (per person) Best for
Flight + road (fastest) ~1,900 km 12 to 15 hrs Rs 5,000 to 11,000 Speed, families, seniors
Train + road (cheapest) ~2,000 km 20 to 24 hrs Rs 1,500 to 4,500 Budget travellers, groups
Overnight bus (road leg) Delhi/Chandigarh onward 12 to 14 hr leg Rs 800 to 1,800 Saving a hotel night
Self-drive (road only) ~1,950 km 30+ hrs over 2 to 3 days Rs 12,000 to 18,000 per car (fuel + tolls) Road-trip enthusiasts

The quick picks:

Fastest: Fly Mumbai to Chandigarh, then a private cab. About 8 to 10 hours on the road, so roughly 12 to 15 hours door to door.

Cheapest: Train from Mumbai to Delhi, then an overnight HRTC or Volvo bus to Manali. Around Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,500 all in.

Most comfortable: Fly to Chandigarh or Delhi and take a private cab the rest of the way, stopping to rest whenever you like.

Driving the entire distance is possible but it is a 2 to 3 day haul of over 30 hours behind the wheel, which is why most Mumbai travellers cover the plains by flight or train and only drive the mountain leg.

How to Reach Manali from Mumbai by Air

Flying is the fastest way. Manali has no full airport of its own. The nearest is Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar (airport code KUU), about 50 km short of Manali, but it takes only small aircraft, the flights are seasonal, and they usually route through Delhi or Chandigarh. So most people from Mumbai fly into a bigger hub and drive the rest.

On the Mumbai leg, IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa Air run frequent daily flights. Mumbai to Delhi takes about 2 hours 10 minutes; Mumbai to Chandigarh about 2 hours 30 minutes. Economy fares usually sit around Rs 4,000 to Rs 9,000 one way and climb past Rs 12,000 in peak holiday weeks. Book a morning arrival so you have daylight for the hill drive.

Which airport to fly into:

Chandigarh (IXC): Closest big hub. Road to Manali is about 300 km, 8 to 10 hours. Best balance of flight frequency and a short onward drive, and the pick most families make.

Delhi (DEL): Widest choice of flights and timings from Mumbai. Road to Manali is about 540 km, 12 to 14 hours through Murthal, Ambala and Mandi. Overnight Volvo coaches from Delhi are a popular onward leg.

Kullu-Manali / Bhuntar (KUU): Only 50 km and about 1.5 to 2 hours from Manali, but flights are limited, seasonal and pricier, and often connect via Delhi. Book weeks ahead if you want to land this close.

Flight plus road, step by step:

Step 1. Take a morning flight from Mumbai to Delhi or Chandigarh.

Step 2. From the airport, hire a private cab, take a shared transfer or board a Volvo bus. The road passes Mandi and Kullu, both good for a chai stop.

Step 3. Past Kullu, Manali is only 1 to 2 hours further along the Beas river. This last stretch also lets you acclimatise before you reach the hills.

This route suits families, senior citizens and anyone on a short trip, because it keeps time on the road to a minimum.

A quick cost read across the three airports: Chandigarh usually gives you the best mix of a cheap Mumbai fare and a short 8 to 10 hour drive. Delhi wins on flight choice and last-minute availability but adds two to four hours on the road. Bhuntar saves you the whole mountain drive, yet the seasonal, connecting flights often cost Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 and can be grounded by weather, so treat it as a bonus if the price and dates line up rather than your default plan. Whichever hub you pick, aim to land by early afternoon so you finish the hill section in daylight.

How to Reach Manali from Mumbai by Train

The train is cheaper and easier on the budget, but slower. Manali has no railway station, so you ride to a northern railhead and continue by road. The three that make sense are Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt and Delhi.

Trains to look for from Mumbai (all continue north through the plains):

Paschim Express (12925): From Bandra Terminus toward Amritsar, with halts at New Delhi and Ambala Cantt.

Golden Temple Mail (12903): From Mumbai Central to Amritsar via New Delhi and Ambala Cantt, a reliable overnight option.

Mumbai Rajdhani (12951) and August Kranti Rajdhani (12953): The fastest trains on this leg, Mumbai Central to Delhi in about 15 to 17 hours, ideal if you want to lose the least time.

Where to get off, and the onward drive:

Chandigarh: Onward road 8 to 10 hours. The most convenient railhead for Manali.

Ambala Cantt: Onward road 10 to 12 hours. Well served by trains from Mumbai and often cheaper to reach.

Delhi: Onward road 12 to 14 hours, with the widest choice of onward buses and cabs.

Fare bands help you plan. Mumbai to Delhi runs roughly Rs 500 to Rs 750 in Sleeper, Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 in 3AC and Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800 in 2AC. Rajdhani fares sit above these. Add the onward bus (Rs 800 to Rs 1,800) and the whole trip stays well under a flight. This route is a favourite of budget travellers, groups of friends and anyone planning a long stay.

Two booking notes. Direct trains from Mumbai to Chandigarh are few, so most travellers ride to New Delhi or Ambala Cantt, both of which have plenty of onward buses and cabs. And on the Rajdhani and popular mail trains, confirmed berths sell out early, so open IRCTC booking 60 days ahead or keep a Tatkal attempt ready one day before travel. If you want the shortest onward drive, get off at Chandigarh; if you want the cheapest ticket, Ambala Cantt is often the better buy.

How to Reach Manali from Mumbai by Road and Bus

Driving the full 1,950 km is a serious undertaking: a 2 to 3 day journey of over 30 hours behind the wheel through Gujarat, Rajasthan and the plains. It is fine for a hardcore road trip, but tiring and not the smart choice with young children or elderly travellers.

If you do drive, the usual line is Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Chandigarh, Mandi, Kullu, Manali. Budget about Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 per car in fuel and tolls one way, and break the drive with overnight halts at Udaipur and Chandigarh.

The better road option is to fly or train to Delhi or Chandigarh and take a bus from there. HRTC and HPTDC run ordinary and Volvo AC coaches, and private Volvo operators run nightly services. Delhi to Manali is an overnight ride of 12 to 14 hours at roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,800, depending on ordinary versus Volvo AC. Chandigarh to Manali is shorter. Booking a night bus also saves you a hotel night.

Most Delhi buses leave in the evening from ISBT Kashmere Gate and reach Manali by mid morning. You can book HRTC and HimSuTa Volvo seats on the HRTC online portal, and private operators through the usual bus-ticket apps. Board an evening service, sleep through the plains, and wake up as the road climbs past Mandi. If you are set on self-driving, plan two overnight halts, at Udaipur and Chandigarh, keep the fuel tank topped up before the hill stretch after Mandi, and start each mountain leg early so you are off the ghats before dark.

Which Route Should You Pick?

If you are short on time or travelling with children or parents, fly to Chandigarh and drive; it is the least tiring way and gets you there in a day. If you are watching the budget, take a train to Delhi and an overnight bus, which is the cheapest by a clear margin. If comfort matters most, fly to Chandigarh or Delhi and hire a private cab so you control the stops. Save the full self-drive for when the road trip itself is the point of the holiday.

Best Way to Travel to Manali from Mumbai by Traveller Type

The right route depends on who is travelling. Here is the pick our travel experts most often recommend for each kind of trip.

Families:

Fly Mumbai to Chandigarh, then a private cab to Manali. Flying cuts the long hours on the road, and a private cab lets you set the pace, stop for meals and rest whenever the kids or grandparents need to. Chandigarh keeps the onward drive to 8 to 10 hours.

Budget travellers:

Train Mumbai to Delhi, then an overnight bus to Manali. The night bus saves a day and a hotel night, and the train leg stays cheap even in Sleeper or 3AC. Total spend usually lands between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,500.

Senior citizens:

Keep road time short: fly Mumbai to Chandigarh or Delhi, then a private transfer with frequent rest stops. This avoids long, cramped bus or train legs and keeps the trip relaxed and safe.

Solo travellers:

Fly or train to Delhi, then an overnight bus to Manali. It is affordable and flexible, and the night bus doubles as your accommodation for the leg, so you save both money and time.

Reaching Manali from Mumbai in Winter

Winter, roughly December to February, is prime time for snow, but it needs a little extra planning from Mumbai.

Fewer flights to Kullu: Flights to Bhuntar thin out and can be delayed or cancelled by weather, so most winter travellers fly into Chandigarh or Delhi instead.

Road delays: Snow can slow or briefly close the roads from Delhi, Chandigarh or Kullu up to Manali, so allow more time for the hill leg.

Buffer days: Keep one or two spare days and a backup plan so a delayed transfer does not derail your itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Manali

Go October to February for snow and clear mountain views, or March to June for pleasant weather and open passes. Avoid July to September, when monsoon landslides can block the hill roads. For a month by month breakdown, see our best time to visit Manali guide.

Travel Tips for the Mumbai to Manali Trip

Book early: Flights, trains and cabs fill up fast over summer holidays, Christmas and long weekends. Early booking gets you both seats and better fares.

Keep buffer days: Allow one to two spare days for the road legs in case of weather or traffic, especially in winter and monsoon.

Watch the weather: Check the mountain forecast before you leave. Winter snow and July to September landslides are the two things that reshuffle plans.

Pack smart: Carry warm layers, a heavy jacket, gloves and a cap in winter; motion-sickness tablets for the hill roads; and comfortable shoes for walking around Manali and Old Manali.

Overall, the trip was good. However driver assigned was not professional. At certain places there were rash drivings. Coming to the accommodation, the hotels were well chosen. Especially the one for manali and dalhousie were the best with mesmerising scenic views. However for the hotel in dharmashal

However, would suggest improvements in terms of assigning good drivers, since thats also an essential part of the trip. Accommodation for manali and dalhousie was too good. Solang valley visit was memorable.

    Manali Travel FAQs

How to reach Manali from Mumbai easily?

Fly Mumbai to Chandigarh or Delhi, about 2 to 2.5 hours, then take a private cab or bus to Manali. Door to door it is roughly 12 to 15 hours, which is the fastest way and the easiest with family.

What is the cheapest way to go to Manali from Mumbai?

Take a train to Delhi or Chandigarh, then an overnight HRTC or Volvo bus to Manali. All in, it usually costs around Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,500 per person, and the night bus saves you a hotel night.

Which is the nearest airport to Manali from Mumbai?

Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar (code KUU) is nearest, about 50 km from Manali, but its flights are limited and seasonal. Most travellers from Mumbai fly into Chandigarh (IXC) or Delhi (DEL) instead and drive the rest.

What is the nearest railway station to Manali?

Manali has no railway station. The nearest useful railheads are Chandigarh (8 to 10 hours by road), Ambala Cantt (10 to 12 hours) and Delhi (12 to 14 hours). You complete the trip by cab or bus.

How long does it take to reach Manali from Mumbai by train?

About 20 to 24 hours in total: 15 to 20 hours by train from Mumbai to Delhi or Chandigarh, then 8 to 14 hours by road to Manali depending on which railhead you choose.

How much does a Mumbai to Manali flight ticket cost?

Mumbai to Delhi or Chandigarh economy fares are usually Rs 4,000 to Rs 9,000 one way, rising past Rs 12,000 in peak season. Seasonal small-aircraft flights to Bhuntar cost more and usually connect via Delhi.

Is there a direct flight or train from Mumbai to Manali?

No. Manali has no railway station and no full airport, so every route ends with a road leg from Delhi, Chandigarh or Bhuntar. Combine a flight or train to the north with a cab or bus for the final stretch.

Is there a direct bus from Mumbai to Manali?

No single bus runs the whole way. Take a bus or train to Delhi or Chandigarh, then catch an HRTC, HPTDC or private Volvo coach to Manali. Delhi to Manali is an overnight ride of 12 to 14 hours.

October to February is best for snow, and March to June for pleasant weather and open passes. Avoid July to September, when monsoon landslides can temporarily block the hill roads.
