About Johannesburg Attractions

Johannesburg is the seat of the Constitutional Court of South Africa and is also one of the largest and the most visited cities in the country. The inception of the city is rooted in the gold-rich hills of Witwatersrand Range, earning Johannesburg the nickname of modern-day El Dorado. One of the fifty largest urban areas of the world, the city of Johannesburg ranks very high among the African countries in regard to tourism. Tourism in Johannesburg is a perfect blend of art, history and natural bounties, which ensures you have a great week soaked in its hospitality.

History of Johannesburg

The original inhabitants of Johannesburg were the San people. The San people were supposed to be hunters and gatherers who used tools made of stone for their hunting and other purposes. According to a few evidences, San people lived in Johannesburg till the tenth century. After the San people moved out, Johannesburg was inhabited by groups of people whose common tongue was Bantu. They came in southwards from the central part of Africa. Ruins of stone walls of Sotho-Tswana and some villages are now scattered around parts of Transvaal which is supposed to be the seat of Johannesburg. The ruins of Sotho-Tswana mines and furnaces where iron was melted suggest that these areas were exploited for its rich mineral wealth much before the Europeans came in or before gold was discovered. One of the most evident sites inside Johannesburg is Melville Koppies which has an iron smelting furnace. The history of Johannesburg also shows the inextricable part of South Africa’s freedom struggle and democracy.

Here are the top 5 things to see on your trip to Johannesburg.

1. The Apartheid Museum

To know the history of Johannesburg and South Africa, do visit the Apartheid Museum. Apartheid is the institutional racial segregation imposed on the native black majority by the white minority in the country, and it was very much prevalent up until the early 90s. The museum traces the trail of the oppression, struggle and the final victory through photos, artefacts, newspaper clippings and video footages.

2. Cradle of Humankind

A Johannesburg day tour to Cradle of Humankind is an absolute must on your visit. About an hours’ drive away, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world richest site for relics of hominins, the species believed to be the direct ancestors of humans, thus earning the site its name. Do visit Sterkfontein Caves and the Maropeng Visitor Centre in the premises, and hire a guide for better understanding of the Palaeolithic history.

3. Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City is the country’s most famous attraction park. Themed on the ‘golden’ history of the Johannesburg, there are numerous thrilling rides and historical exhibits for kids and adults alike. Children will love the trampoline, ten-pin bowling alley and the Anaconda roller coaster. Grownups should not miss the opportunity of seeing the inside of a real gold mine at Crown Mines, although now very much out of use.

4. Soweto and Mandela House

Soweto is an abbreviation for South-western Townships, which shines a very broad light into how deep did racism cut into the Johannesburg. This was the area where black labourers were segregated in a planned manner and made to live far away from the main city in low shacks. This is the cradle of the South African uprising against apartheid and the struggle towards democracy, holding the eminent hands of Nelson Mandela. Do visit the Mandela House on your Soweto tour from Johannesburg for a plethora of photographs, paintings and framed documents about the family, of the society and of various recognitions he received.

5. Lion and Safari Park

At the Lion and Safari Park, animal interaction is the biggest attraction. Visitors can drive through pride of lions in caged vehicles, and see the kings and queens of the jungle in their everyday actions. You can even cuddle a cub, and hand feed other animals like giraffes and zebras.

People & Culture of Johannesburg

Johannesburg is also known as the cultural hub of SOuth Africa. Several museums, theatres, art galleries and libraries are seated in Johannesburg. The much reputed National School of Arts is situated here. Also, the dance institution, South African Ballet Theatre is located here. Apart from that, Johannesburg is also home to the University of  Witwatersrand’s School of Arts. University of Johannesburg Art Gallery is quite popular for its painitings which include a collection from the 17th century to the 21st century. The paintings include a collection of Dutch, British, European and French paintings along with some masterpieces of Contemporary Art. The rich cultural diversity of Johannesburg and its history is quite evident through these pictures.

The population of Johannesburg, according to the 2014 census, is  4,434,827. Therefore, it is also considered as the largest and densely populated city in the country. 3/4th of its population comprises of Africans, while 16% comprises of the Whites and 6% colored. It is also interesting to find that Indians make up for the 4% of the population of Johannesburg. Christianity is the practicing religion among majority. Jews, Hindus and Muslims reside as minorities in Johannesburg. The residents are fond of sports and games; soccer and cricket are the favorite pastimes of people here.

    • Trip to Johannesburg

Hi sirs Thanks for arranging our South Africa tour consisting of 12N / 13 Days. Would like to give some fair feedback for your reference and records and corrective actions wherever necessary. The feedback is graded on a scale ranging from 9 to 1, where 9 is the best and 1 you can understand. I will be rating the following for your benefit of better understanding – Hotels for Stay Breakfast in the same hotels Transportation / Logistics Drivers Local numbers for emergency calls for any requirement Starting with Hotel for Stay – Peermont Suites – Comfortable stay but so great, hence would like to give rating of 6 Breakfast in the above hotel was good but not many choices, hence would like to rate it as 7 Kruger Park Lodge – Comfortable stay, we liked it. Hence would like to give rating of 8 Breakfast in the above was just ok and nothing great, hence rating is 5 Sun Soho – very compact room, child bed is a sofa converted into bed, my son is almost 6 ft. hence rating is 6 Breakfast in the above hotel is good, manageable. Would like to rate it as 7 Blackwaters River Lodge – Pls do not recommend this place, its very pathetic. Only plus point is it is close to Knysna. Otherwise there is no reason why this hotel was given to us. We had to travel to go places. Would like to give ratings 4 Breakfast in the above hotel is also very pathetic. We were the only guests in this hotel and the hardly any choices in food. Hence we would like to rate it as below 3 Holiday Inn – Name is big, but the room is very small to accommodate 3 people in the room. It was just ordinary room with a double bed ( just not enough for two people to sleep ) and a single bed. Hence, would like to rate this stay of 5 Breakfast in the above hotel was just fine. Its ok. Hence rating may be like 6. Transportation / Logistics was good all thru. Good vehicles given to us. Would like to rate it as 9 Drivers – Both Haroon Ismail upto drop to Johannesburg after 6 days and thereafter Sipho from pick from George airport till drop us back to Cape Town international airport were very good. They were humble, obedient and very supportive. We like both and would like to rate them as 9. Local contacts for emergency was just fine. However, we enjoyed the full tour without any problems and your arrangements were fine. The Shark Cage dive was cancelled by the tour agent there due to sea roughness as told us. They said they would refund money to you. Pls let me know how you want to refund us the same. Many Thanks once again for arranging the tour for us. Regards / Ramesh

    • Trip to Johannesburg

Hello, It is with regards to our trip to Spain from 13th September 2019 to 23 September 2019. We booked our tour via Trip market LLP. Our customer service agent was Ms Palak Saraf. From day one she was available either via call or WhatsApp. She helped us select the places in Spain along with the things to do over there. Our Travel Triangle service agent Mr Jibin Varghese was also very helpful and available to us. Our trip was very good. The destination we went to was also exquisite and unique to us. The private transfers were also comfortable. The activities voucher were perfect. The hotels were clean and nice too. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Apart from two issues, our entire trip was excellent. We thank Ms Palak and Mr Jash for giving us such a great experience.

We dis not get good hotel stay in Pretori.. very bad for an Indian tourist to stay there . No near by restaurants for food . We sid not like it personally . And very small room for 3 people. Even in Sun city cabanas for 3 people it's a very small room . And next time I would like u not to suggest Sun City to anyone because it's really waste of time. Do suggest guests to not opt SunCity.. and we got really really good driver from Cape Town Mr.Faruk . Excellent he is . The next drivers weren't that impressive but they all helped us . Only one driver in Jhoburg who picked us from Airport did not oblige to take us to Indian restaurant for food . And please book vegetarian meal in flight for Vegans. We sid not get Vegetarian food in flight because you hadn't booked it for us . We as a family enjoyed Garden route . Best places around . Nice stays in Garden route. We enjoyed our trip from Cape Town to Port Elizebeth. Thankyou
