Festivals in Spain
La Tomatina Festival is held in the town of Buñol, near Valencia in eastern Spain. Thousands of people gather in the town on the last Wednesday of August every year to hurl tons of tomatoes at each other. Participants from all over the world throw tomatoes and enjoy the world’s messiest food fight. La Tomatina has been held in Bunol since 1945. The Tomatina festival in Spain ranks high on many travel bucket lists. This week-long festival also features parades, music, fireworks, and cooking contests. It begins around 11 am and the tomato fight begins after someone from the crowd is able to bring down a piece of ham from a pole. Once more than 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes have been thrown, the debris on the streets is cleaned by fire trucks. The town council of Bunol limits the number of participants and tickets are priced at EUR 10 per person. Tickets can be reserved online from the town council website.
