Cave Temple Entry Ticket

By the TravelTriangle Sri Lanka desk. Last updated: October 2026.
Foreign visitors pay LKR 3,000 to enter the Dambulla Cave Temple, which works out to roughly USD 10, or about INR 880 at current exchange rates. Indian and other SAARC nationals usually pay a reduced rate of around LKR 1,500 where the concession is applied, and children under five go free. You buy the ticket in cash at the counter beside the main stairway. The price is set by the Central Cultural Fund in Sri Lankan rupees, so the dollar figure moves a little as the exchange rate shifts.
Dambulla Cave Temple fee table (2026)
Here is the full fee breakdown. All figures are in Sri Lankan rupees, with approximate USD and INR equivalents.
| Visitor category | LKR | USD (approx) | INR (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreigner (non-SAARC) adult | 3,000 | ~10 | ~880 |
| SAARC adult, incl. Indian | 1,500 | ~5 | ~440 |
| Child aged 5 to 12 | Half the adult fare | ||
| Child under 5 | Free | Free | Free |
| Sri Lankan citizen | 100 | ||
| Golden Temple museum (optional) | ~300 | ||
| Shoe storage (shoes off, required) | 25 |
A word on the SAARC rate. Some travellers are charged the full LKR 3,000 at Dambulla rather than the concession, because the discount is applied less consistently here than at Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. Carry enough cash for the full fare and ask the clerk for the SAARC ticket when you buy.
Opening hours and when the ticket counter closes
The temple opens every day from about 7:00 AM. The part that catches people out is the ticket counter, which stops selling in the late afternoon, usually by around 5:00 PM. Arrive after that and you may still climb to the caves, but you will not be able to buy a ticket, so aim to be at the counter by mid-afternoon. A full visit takes one to two hours: a 20 to 30 minute climb up the rock, then an hour or so wandering the five caves.
Other costs to budget for
Two small charges sit on top of the entrance fee. You leave your shoes before stepping into the caves, and the shoe minder charges about LKR 25. If your shoulders or knees are not covered, a sarong rents for roughly LKR 100 to 200 at the gate. The Golden Temple museum at the foot of the hill has its own ticket, around LKR 300, and it is optional. If you are touring the wider region, a Cultural Triangle Pass (about USD 50) covers sites such as Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, though Dambulla is generally ticketed separately at the temple itself. You can check the current Sigiriya Rock entry fee if you plan to pair the two.
How and where to buy tickets
There is no official online booking for Dambulla. You buy in person at the counter near the base of the stairway, and you pay in Sri Lankan rupees in cash. Cards are not accepted, and the third-party resale sites that show up in search results add a markup for no real benefit, so skip them. Bring small notes, as change for large bills is not always on hand.
Dress code
This is an active Buddhist temple, so the dress code is checked at the entrance. Cover your shoulders and your knees, remove your shoes before the caves, and take off hats and sunglasses inside. Light, loose clothing is best, because the climb is warm and the stone underfoot gets hot by midday. Packing a pair of socks helps on that hot stone.
Where Dambulla is, and getting there
Dambulla sits in the Central Province, in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, about 148 km from Colombo. The drive takes three and a half to four hours by car or tuk-tuk, or you can take a bus for a few hundred rupees. For the history of the five caves, the Golden Temple and King Valagamba's first-century origins, see the full Dambulla Cave Temple guide. Many travellers fold Dambulla into a longer island loop. Our Sri Lanka tour packages bundle it with Sigiriya, Kandy and the rest of the Cultural Triangle.
Our Sri Lanka desk checks these fees against the Central Cultural Fund (ccf.gov.lk), the authority that sets and collects the ticket price, and re-verifies them before each update.

Colombo Travel FAQs
What is the Dambulla Cave Temple entrance fee for foreigners?
Foreign (non-SAARC) adults pay LKR 3,000, which is about USD 10 or roughly INR 880 depending on the exchange rate. The fee is set by the Central Cultural Fund and collected in cash at the counter beside the main stairway. Children under five enter free, and those aged 5 to 12 pay half
Is the entry fee cheaper for Indians and SAARC nationals?
Usually yes. Indian and other SAARC visitors are meant to pay a concession of around LKR 1,500, half the foreigner rate. In practice the discount is applied unevenly at Dambulla, and some travellers report paying the full LKR 3,000. Carry enough cash for the full fare and ask the clerk for the SAARC ticket when you buy
What are the temple timings, and when does the ticket counter close?
The temple is open every day from about 7:00 AM. The ticket counter stops selling in the late afternoon, generally by around 5:00 PM, so do not leave it late. A visit takes one to two hours including the climb
How do I buy tickets, and is there online booking?
You buy at the on-site counter and pay in Sri Lankan rupees in cash. Cards are not accepted, and there is no official online booking for Dambulla, so ignore third-party resale sites that add a markup. Bring small notes for easier change
Is there a separate fee for the Golden Temple museum?
Yes. The Golden Temple museum at the base of the hill has its own ticket of around LKR 300, and it is optional. The cave temple entrance fee does not include it, and visitors short on time often skip the museum
Is entry free for children?
Children under five enter free. Those aged 5 to 12 pay half the applicable adult fare, so about LKR 1,500 for a foreign child or roughly LKR 750 at the SAARC rate. Bring proof of age if your child is near the cut-off
What is the dress code at Dambulla Cave Temple?
Cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes before entering the caves, and take off hats and sunglasses inside. If you are not dressed appropriately, a sarong rents at the entrance for roughly LKR 100 to 200. Pack socks, because the stone gets hot
How far is Dambulla from Colombo, and how do I get there?
Dambulla is about 148 km from Colombo in the Central Province, a drive of three and a half to four hours by car. Buses run the route for a few hundred rupees. It pairs naturally with Sigiriya, which is around 20 km away
