How to reach by bus (route 122, the cheapest way)

The cheapest way from central Colombo is the 122 bus (Colombo to Avissawella), which runs along the A4 High Level Road. Board at the Pettah or Bastian Mawatha bus stands, tell the conductor you are getting off at Kaluaggala for Leisure World, and expect roughly 1.25 to 2 hours depending on traffic. From the main road the entrance is a short walk or a quick tuk-tuk hop. Private Superline services cover the same corridor if a 122 is not due. Buses run through the day, you pay on board in cash, and the fare is only a couple of hundred rupees. They fill up on weekends and holidays, so start early if you are travelling with children.

How to reach by train (Kelani Valley line)

For a slower, scenic alternative, the Kelani Valley railway line runs from Colombo Fort out toward Avissawella, roughly shadowing the A4. Trains are infrequent and leisurely, so allow about 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the Avissawella end of the line and treat the ride as part of the day rather than a fast transfer. Get off at Kosgama, the nearest station to the park at about 5 km, and cover the last stretch to Kaluaggala by tuk-tuk. Only a handful of services run daily, so check the current timetable at the station before you commit to this option. It suits travellers who would rather watch the countryside roll by than sit in A4 traffic.

By car, taxi or tuk-tuk (the A4 route)

The most direct way is to drive the A4, which leaves Colombo as High Level Road and becomes Avissawella Road, heading east through Maharagama, Kottawa, Homagama and Godagama toward Hanwella, then on to Kaluaggala where the park sits. A clear run is about 40 minutes, but the A4 is a busy corridor, so allow an hour to 90 minutes on a weekday. Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber work from anywhere in Colombo and take the guesswork out of the fare. If you are already out near Hanwella or Kaluaggala, a tuk-tuk covers the last mile quickly and cheaply. Ignore any route that sends you up the A1: that is the Kandy road and the wrong direction.

Opening days and hours (plan your visit)

Leisure World is closed on Mondays, and some listings show it shut on Tuesdays too, so the reliable window is Wednesday to Sunday. The ticket counters run from 9 am to 4 pm, the amusement rides from 9 am to 5 pm, and the water area from 11 am to 4:30 pm, with the same times on weekdays and weekends. The closed day can shift around public holidays: if a Poya or public holiday falls on a Monday the park opens that day and closes the following Tuesday instead, and it runs all seven days during school holidays and festival seasons.
