The gate ticket applies only to Phase I, the landscaped recreation park beside the water where the boat jetty, lawns and food stalls sit. Foreign passport holders pay roughly double the local rate, which is standard for Sri Lankan public parks.

Is Gregory Lake free to enter?

Partly. Only Phase I, the main recreation park, charges an entrance fee. Phases II and III, the quieter lakeside paths that run along the main road, are open to walk into at no cost. So if you only want to stroll beside the water or photograph the hills, you can do that for free. The ticket is for the maintained park with the jetty, seating and activity area. A few overview sites claim the whole lake is free, which is only true of the outer banks, not the ticketed Phase I park.

Foreigner vs local ticket price

Two rates apply at the counter. Foreign visitors pay about LKR 200 and Sri Lankan nationals pay about LKR 100 for the same Phase I park. Carry small notes in Sri Lankan Rupees. The counter does not quote in Indian Rupees or US Dollars, and the figure some pages still show as 'INR 200' is simply the LKR gate price written in the wrong currency. There is no online booking for the entrance ticket, so you buy it on the spot and a few hundred rupees in cash per person is enough.

Boat rides and activity charges

The entrance ticket does not cover anything on the water. Boating, pony rides and cycle hire are run by private operators inside Phase I and priced per ride, so budget for them separately. Rates move with the season and with a bit of bargaining, so treat these as starting figures rather than fixed rates.

Opening hours and how to reach

Gregory Lake is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and late afternoon gives the prettiest light for photos over the water. Is "Gregory Park" the same as Gregory Lake?

Yes. You will see it written as Gregory Lake, Gregory Park, Lake Gregory and even misspelled as 'gegari lake' or 'gegary park', but they all mean the same reservoir and recreation park in Nuwara Eliya. The ticket prices above apply whichever spelling you searched.
