About The Reformation Wall in Geneva
The reformation wall also known as the International Monument to Reformation is built inside the old city walls of Geneva. It is a representation of the fortifications’ and the importance of the city of Geneva in the Protestant Reformation. The reformation wall honors the individuals, events and the documents of the Reformation all of which are depicted through statues and bas-reliefs.
The wall was constructed to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the University of Geneva and the 400th anniversary of the University’s founder, John Calvin. The wall was inaugurated in 1909 and the idea came from 4 Swiss architects who participated in a contest to transform that part of the park. The sculptures were created by two French sculptors, Paul Landowski and Henri Bouchard. The reformation wall features the main proponents of Calvinism, William Farel, John Calvin, Theodore Beza and John Knox at the center in the form of four 5-meter-tall statues.
Frederick William, William the silent, Gaspard de Coligny, Roger Williams, Oliver Cromwell and Stephen Bocskay are also placed on the wall, on either side of the central statues and are 3 meter tall.
