Best Time To Visit Tamil Nadu

Late February and March is a short spell of spring season in Tamil Nadu. During this shoulder season, the weather in Tamil Nadu is still agreeable for outdoor sightseeing and other activities. When April approaches, the temperature in Tamil Nadu rises in the river plains and coastal areas. The hill stations in Tamil Nadu provide an ideal respite from the scorching heat. The months of April and May during summer in Tamil Nadu are the hottest months with temperatures as high as 40 degrees. It is not advisable to go out in the day without precautions during summer months. Once the sun sets, cool sea breeze provides relief in the coastal areas and hill stations.  

Due to its location in the far south, hill stations in Tamil Nadu are not as cool as up in North India. However, summer in Tamil Nadu is the best time to visit hill stations of the Western Ghats such as Ooty and Coonoor. Beaches in Pondicherry, now Puducherry, are also great destinations to visit in Tamil Nadu in summer.

There are two phases for monsoon in Tamil Nadu: Southwest monsoon from June to September and Northwest monsoon from October to December. From economy to tourism, there are a lot of things depend on the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu.  The main monsoon season largely passes by Tamil Nadu, but the state receives plenty of rainfall during the latter half of the year due to the northeast monsoon season. From October to early December, the threat of violent cyclones disrupts tourism and causes flood conditions in coastal areas. Hill stations of Tamil Nadu are bathed with fresh green canopy after monsoon season.

The winter season in Tamil Nadu is a popular tourist season. Several local festivals & fairs, traditional celebrations, and ideal temperatures make Tamil Nadu a perfect place to visit in winter. Late November/December through February remains the best time to visit South India for all travellers. Whether you’re looking for a holiday or a honeymoon in Tamil Nadu, the winter season is ideal to spend time with your loved ones. Rainfall in Tamil Nadu is less likely in the winter season.

The temperature in Tamil Nadu is at its lowest in January and celebrations during Pongal, with the lighting of bonfires, make the state a must-visit destination in winter. Hiking in the Western Ghats along the Kerala border, walking in tea estates such as Rajakkad, temple hopping, and beach combing are popular things to do in Tamil Nadu in winter. The Christmas and New Year holidays are very busy and hotel prices in Tamil Nadu are higher during this time. The weather of Tamil Nadu in December is less humid and ideal for sightseeing excursions.
