How To Reach Ooty From Chennai

By Air: There are no airports in Ooty, and the closest airport to this hill station is in Coimbatore, which is nearly 100 kms away from the city center. Covering the final distance from Chennai to Ooty is done by road, by either traveling in a local bus or hiring a private taxi for oneself. This is not a much preferred method for those living in nearby cities, such as Chennai, since trains and buses are more preferred for traveling to Ooty.

By Road: The distance from Chennai to Ooty by road is nearly 562 kms, which can easily be covered within 10 to 11 hours. There are several local buses available that travel from Chennai to Ooty. While some of these buses are direct buses, there are also a few buses that have to be changed from certain destinations enroute Ooty from Chennai.

By Train: The Chennai to Ooty distance by train is around 600 kms, which are covered within 15 to 16 hours. The only problem with opting for this route is that there is no railway station in Ooty. The closest railway station is in Mettupalayam, which is a good 50 kms away from the city center of Ooty. Once people deboard at Mettupalayam, the remaining distance to Ooty has to be covered via the road, which again takes a lot of time, or by the toy train, which although pleasant is still a long journey
