Chatuchak Market Travel Guide

Chatuchak is strongest on clothing and vintage fashion, art and antiques, home decor, handicrafts, plants and pet supplies. Head to the fashion sections (2 to 6, 12 to 14, 19 to 21) for clothes, sections 1 and 7 to 9 for antiques and handicrafts, and 8 to 11 for art. Named stalls worth finding include Ban Sin Thai for arts and artefacts and Orange Karen Silver for costume jewellery.

Counter at roughly half the first quote and settle around a quarter off; vendors expect it and price a margin in. You get a better rate by buying several pieces from one stall and by paying in cash with small notes. A tagged printed price is usually fixed, while a handwritten or spoken price is open. Stay friendly and be willing to walk away, which is when the real price often appears.

Arrive between 9 and 10 am on a Saturday or Sunday. The aisles are walkable, it is cooler, and vendors haggle more happily before the midday rush. By afternoon the covered lanes hit about 35°C and the crowds peak. The Friday-night wholesale session is a quieter alternative if you only want a preview.

The easiest route is the MRT Blue Line to Kamphaeng Phet, Exit 2, which opens straight into the market. You can also take the MRT to Chatuchak Park, one stop away, or the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Mo Chit (N8), Exit 1, then walk a few minutes south. Assume cash. The overwhelming majority of stalls take Thai baht in cash only, and small notes make bargaining smoother. A few larger shops and cafes accept cards or QR payment. Withdraw what you need before you start, because the ATMs at the entrances and clock tower can run out on busy afternoons.

Give it at least three to four hours, and a full morning if you like to browse. With more than 15,000 stalls you cannot see it all, so pick two or three section zones from the guide above, start early while it is cool, and build in a food and foot-massage break.
