Krabi Travel FAQs
Can non-swimmers go snorkelling in Krabi?
Yes. Reputable Four Islands and island-hopping operators provide life vests, and with one on you float without any effort and simply look down through the mask, with a guide alongside. Tell the crew you are not a confident swimmer so they stay close, practise breathing through the snorkel in the shallows first, and stick to the calmer stops. Plenty of first-timers snorkel this way every day.
What should I carry for a snorkelling trip in Krabi?
Reef-safe mineral sunscreen, a rash guard or light long-sleeve top, a small dry bag for your phone, cash and documents, and cash in small baht notes for gear, snacks and any park fee. Bring your own mask if you own one, since a fitted mask beats a shared one. Add water, a hat and sunglasses for the boat, and motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness. Tours supply the snorkel gear itself.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
No, tours include a mask, snorkel and usually fins. That said, a mask fitted to your own face is the single biggest upgrade to the day, because shared masks tend to leak and fog. If you own one, bring it. If not, do the fit test on the boat's spare: hold it to your face without the strap, breathe in through your nose, and check it seals on suction alone.
How do I stop my mask fogging up?
Rub a little baby shampoo or even a smear of spit around the inside of the dry lens before you swim, then rinse once with seawater. Do the fit test first so it seals properly, and keep hair from under the skirt of the mask. A mask that fits and does not fog is the difference between watching fish and constantly stopping to clear water.
Is snorkelling in Krabi safe for kids and families?
Yes, families are common on the day boats and the crews are used to first-timers of every age. Keep children in a life vest and within arm's reach, choose the calmer, shallower stops, and let them try the mask in knee-deep water before the first proper swim. A snug mask, a vest and an unhurried pace are all it takes. Watch small children on the deck and near the boat ladder as well as in the water.
What is the best time of year for snorkelling in Krabi?
The dry season, roughly November to April, brings the calmest seas and the clearest water, which is why it is the prime window. The May to October southwest monsoon is choppier, has lower visibility and sees the odd tour cancellation. Whatever the season, book the early departure, when the sea is usually flattest and you reach the reef before the day-trip crowds. The snorkelling guide has the full month-by-month season.
How can I avoid seasickness on a Krabi snorkelling boat?
Take a motion-sickness tablet 30 to 60 minutes before you board rather than once you feel ill. On the boat, sit low and towards the middle where it pitches least, keep your eyes on the horizon instead of your phone, and stay out in the fresh air. A dry biscuit and water help settle your stomach. Longtail boats roll more than speedboats, so pick a speedboat trip if you know you are sensitive.
How do I snorkel without damaging the coral reef?
Float horizontally over the reef and never stand on, touch or hold the coral; even a single touch can kill years of growth, and it cuts you too. Keep your fins below the surface so you are not kicking sand onto the reef, keep a distance from fish and turtles rather than chasing them, and wear reef-safe mineral sunscreen or a rash guard instead of chemical creams that bleach coral. Some marine parks ask for reef-safe sunscreen only.
How much extra should I budget for snorkelling in Krabi?
The tour price and any national-park fee are on the entry fees page. On top of that, a snorkeller's extras are small: gear rental runs about 100 to 300 THB (roughly Rs 285 to Rs 855) if you need it, a dry bag 150 to 300 THB, and reef-safe sunscreen 250 to 500 THB. If you own a mask and sunscreen, the extras rarely pass a few hundred rupees a head. Carry cash in small notes, as the pier and beach stalls do not take cards.
Are there jellyfish or sea urchins to worry about when snorkelling in Krabi?
Occasionally, and a little care handles both. Keep your feet up off the reef flat and wear reef shoes or fins so you do not stand on a sea urchin, which is the most common minor injury. For jellyfish, listen to the crew: if they flag one, stay covered in a rash guard and stay with the group. Neither is a reason to skip snorkelling, and serious stings are rare on the guided reefs.
