Snorkelling In Krabi

Snorkeling in Krabi, Thailand

Snorkel to take a peek at the underwater world of Krabi

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Krabi is one of the best places in Thailand to put your face in the water and just look. The province sits on the Andaman coast, ringed by limestone-cliff islands like Phi Phi, Poda and the Hong group, where white-sand beaches drop into clear, shallow water over living coral. Most of the good reef is a short longtail or speedboat ride offshore, the sites are shallow enough for first-timers, and licensed guides run trips daily from Ao Nang and Nong Thale. Below is a working guide to where to go, what a tour costs in both baht and rupees, when to visit and what you will actually see down there. For a spot-by-spot narrative you can also read our full Krabi snorkeling guide.

Snorkeling in Krabi at a glance

A quick read before you book. Prices are per person on a shared tour and are indicative for the 2026 season.

Question Short answer
Is it worth it? Yes. Shallow, calm, coral-rich sites that suit non-swimmers and kids, plus deeper reef for confident swimmers.
Best spots Four Islands, Hong Islands, Bamboo Island, Phi Phi (Maya Bay area), Koh Rok, Koh Haa, Koh Si.
Typical tour cost About 1,000 to 2,900 THB (Rs 2,850 to Rs 8,300) shared; private longtail from ~2,500 THB (Rs 7,100).
Best time November to April. Calm, clear water; May to October is monsoon with rougher seas.
Suits non-swimmers? Yes. Life vests are standard and shallow house-reef stops are guided.
How to get there Fly to Krabi (KBV), then a boat from Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara or Klong Muang piers.

Is Krabi good for snorkeling, and what should you expect?

Krabi is genuinely good for snorkeling, and it is forgiving. The signature Andaman scenery, sheer limestone karsts rising straight out of turquoise water, sits right above reefs that start in waist-deep shallows. That combination is rare. You get postcard views on the surface and healthy hard and soft coral a metre or two below it, without needing to be a strong swimmer.

Expect reef fish in numbers: sergeant majors, parrotfish, wrasse and clouds of small damsels around the coral heads, with the odd blacktip reef shark cruising the drop-offs at Koh Rok and Koh Haa. Visibility on a good day runs 10 to 20 metres in season. The catch is that the best coral is offshore, so almost everyone snorkels from a boat trip rather than wading off the main beach. Ao Nang's own rock islands, Koh Si and Koh Haa near the coast, are the exception and stay pleasantly uncrowded because few tourists bother with them.

Swimmers, non-swimmers and kids

You do not need to swim to snorkel here. Every reputable operator hands out buoyancy vests, and guides anchor at shallow, sheltered stops first so nervous first-timers and children can find their feet. Confident swimmers can ask to be dropped at the deeper edges, where the coral wall and the bigger fish are. If you are travelling with young kids, pick a Four Islands or Hong Islands longtail trip over a full-day Phi Phi speedboat run, the water is calmer and the days are shorter.

Best snorkeling spots in Krabi

Seven sites do most of the work. The table sums them up; the notes below go deeper on each.

Spot Best for Depth / level Reach from Krabi
Four Islands (Poda, Tup, Chicken, Phra Nang) First-timers, families, half-day trips Shallow, beginner 15 to 40 min by longtail/speedboat from Ao Nang
Hong Islands (Koh Hong group) Calm lagoon snorkeling, scenery Shallow to moderate ~40 min speedboat; national park
Bamboo Island (Koh Phai) White sand + shallow reef, often with Phi Phi Shallow, beginner Full-day Phi Phi + Bamboo combo
Phi Phi (Maya Bay, Loh Samah, Pileh) Iconic scenery, busier reef Shallow to moderate 1.5 to 2 hrs speedboat, full day
Koh Rok (Rok Nai / Rok Nok) Best coral + clarity in the region Moderate; some current Full day, usually from Koh Lanta
Koh Haa Clear water, blacktip reef sharks, turtles Moderate to advanced Full day, Lanta or Ao Nang
Koh Si and Koh Haa (Ao Nang rock islands) Quiet, intact reef close to shore Shallow to moderate Short longtail from Ao Nang

Four Islands tour (Poda, Tup, Chicken and Phra Nang)

This is the classic Krabi day out and the right first trip for most people. A longtail or speedboat loops Koh Poda, Tup Island, Chicken Island (Koh Kai) and Phra Nang Cape, with snorkel stops over shallow coral between the beaches. At low tide a sandbar links Tup and Chicken islands and you can practically walk between them. It is calm, close to shore and cheap, which is why it suits families and nervous first-timers. You will share it with other boats, so go early. See Koh Poda for more on the headline island.

Hong Islands (Koh Hong)

A protected national-park group north of Ao Nang, built around a near-enclosed emerald lagoon. The snorkeling is gentle and the scenery does the heavy lifting. Because it is a marine park there is a separate entry fee (about 300 THB, verify at the counter), and boats are limited, so it feels less of a scrum than Phi Phi.

Bamboo Island and Phi Phi

Bamboo Island (Koh Phai) is a small, sugar-white islet with a shallow reef right off the beach, usually sold as an add-on to a full-day Phi Phi trip. Phi Phi itself, the Ko Phi Phi Le side around Maya Bay, Loh Samah and Pileh Lagoon, has the most famous scenery and the most boats. The coral is decent but heavily visited; come for the setting as much as the fish, and start early to beat the crowds at Maya Bay.

Koh Rok and Koh Haa

For serious snorkelers, these two are the prize. Koh Rok (Rok Nai and Rok Nok) sits inside Mu Ko Lanta National Park and has the clearest water and healthiest hard coral in the wider Krabi area. Koh Haa is a five-islet cluster known for its clarity, resident blacktip reef sharks and green turtles. Both are long days, usually launched from Koh Lanta, and both carry a national park fee (about 400 THB, verify). Worth it if you want the best reef, not the closest one.

Ao Nang rock islands (Koh Si and Koh Haa)

The quiet pick. Koh Si and the nearer Koh Haa rock islands sit just off the Ao Nang coast and get a fraction of the traffic, so the reefs are more intact and it feels like real marine wilderness. A short longtail charter gets you there, and it pairs well with a Four Islands morning.

Snorkeling tour cost in Krabi (THB and INR)

There is no single price, it depends on the boat, the distance and whether you share or go private. The table gives realistic 2026 ranges per person for shared trips (private longtails are priced per boat). Rupee figures use Rs 2.85 to the baht. For a full breakdown of park and pier charges see the Krabi snorkeling entry fees page.

Tour type What it covers Price (THB) Price (INR approx.)
Four Islands, shared longtail Half day, 4 stops, gear, near Ao Nang 1,000 to 1,300 Rs 2,850 to Rs 3,700
Four Islands, shared speedboat Faster, same route, lunch often included 1,400 to 1,900 Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,400
Hong Islands day trip Speedboat, lagoon, park area 1,500 to 2,200 Rs 4,300 to Rs 6,300
Phi Phi + Bamboo, full-day speedboat Maya Bay, Bamboo reef, lunch 1,900 to 2,900 Rs 5,400 to Rs 8,300
Koh Rok / Koh Haa, full day Best coral, from Koh Lanta 2,500 to 3,500 Rs 7,100 to Rs 10,000
Private longtail (up to ~6) Half day, your own route, per boat 2,500 to 4,000 Rs 7,100 to Rs 11,400
Snorkel gear rental, per day Mask + snorkel if you skip a tour 150 to 300 Rs 430 to Rs 850

On top of the tour price, national park sites add a separate fee paid at the counter: about 400 THB (Rs 1,140) for Koh Rok and Koh Haa in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, and about 300 THB (Rs 855) for the Hong Islands. Verify current rates, they change with the season.

Best time for snorkeling in Krabi

Go between November and April. That is the dry Andaman season: calm seas, light wind and the clearest water of the year, often 15 to 20 metres of visibility. December to March is peak, so the popular sites are busy but the conditions are the best. May to October is the southwest monsoon, when swell and run-off cut visibility and some island trips (Koh Rok, Koh Haa) close or run irregularly. You can still snorkel the sheltered Ao Nang and Four Islands stops in the shoulder months, just check the forecast the day before.

Season Months Sea and visibility Verdict
Peak dry Dec to Mar Calm, 15 to 20 m viz Best conditions, most crowds
Shoulder dry Nov and Apr Mostly calm, good viz Great value, fewer boats
Monsoon May to Oct Swell, run-off, lower viz Sheltered sites only; far islands may close

What you will see underwater

Krabi's reefs are shallow-water Andaman coral: branching and boulder hard corals, soft corals and anemones, worked over by reef fish. Expect parrotfish grazing the coral, sergeant majors and damsels in clouds, butterflyfish, moray eels tucked in crevices, and anemonefish (clownfish) if you look closely. At the better offshore sites, Koh Rok and Koh Haa, you have a real chance of blacktip reef sharks (harmless, and usually more nervous of you than you are of them) and green turtles grazing the seagrass.

Bioluminescent night snorkeling

A few Ao Nang and Railay operators run after-dark trips where you swim over plankton that glow when the water is disturbed, so every stroke lights up around you. It runs on darker, moonless nights and is weather-dependent, but it is one of the most memorable things you can do here. Book with a licensed guide and go on a clear, low-moon evening.

How to reach the snorkeling and practical tips

Fly into Krabi International Airport (KBV), about 20 to 30 minutes from Ao Nang, the main launch point for tours. Boats leave from Ao Nang beach, Nopparat Thara pier and Klong Muang; Koh Rok and Koh Haa trips usually start from Koh Lanta instead. For the full route and transfer detail, see how to reach snorkeling in Krabi. Prefer scuba? Compare it with scuba diving in Krabi.

A few things worth packing and knowing before you go out:

• Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard: if you burn, a rash guard beats sunscreen on your back for a long day on a boat, and it protects the reef.

• Your own mask if you have one: tour gear is fine, but a mask that fits you well makes the whole day better. A cheap dry-bag keeps your phone safe on a wet longtail.

• Cash in baht: boats and counters mostly take cash; carry small baht notes for park fees and gear rental.

• Sea legs and water: motion sickness pills for the longer Phi Phi and Koh Rok runs, plenty of water, and something to keep valuables dry.

• Do not touch the reef: stay off the coral, do not stand on it, and never chase or touch marine life. It is a national park in most places.

Plan your Krabi snorkeling trip

Krabi rewards you whether you have never worn a mask or you have a hundred dives logged: shallow, forgiving reefs for the first group and clear offshore coral for the second, all under some of the best island scenery in Thailand. Line up the right trip for your season and your group, and it becomes the day everyone remembers. When you are ready, browse Thailand tour packages or read the wider Krabi travel guide to slot snorkeling into a full itinerary.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

    Is Krabi good for snorkeling?

Yes. Krabi has shallow, calm, coral-rich sites right below its limestone islands, and most of them suit beginners. The Four Islands and Hong Islands trips work for non-swimmers and kids, while Koh Rok and Koh Haa offer the clearest water and the best coral for confident swimmers.

How safe is it to snorkel in Krabi?

Very, if you go with a licensed operator. There are plenty of shallow, sheltered locations to snorkel safely across the islands of Krabi, guides brief you first, and buoyancy vests are standard. Stay with the group, watch for boat traffic, and pick sheltered sites on windier days.

    Can non-swimmers snorkel in Krabi?

Yes. Every reputable tour provides life vests, and guides start at shallow, calm stops so first-timers and children can get comfortable. Choose a Four Islands or Hong Islands trip over a full-day Phi Phi run if you are nervous in the water.

Which are the best places for snorkeling in Krabi?

The Four Islands (Poda, Tup, Chicken, Phra Nang) and the Hong Islands are the best beginner-friendly spots close to Ao Nang. Bamboo Island and the Phi Phi area have the famous scenery, and Koh Rok and Koh Haa have the clearest water and healthiest coral in the region. The Ao Nang rock islands, Koh Si and Koh Haa, are the quiet alternative.

How much does snorkeling in Krabi cost?

A shared Four Islands longtail trip runs about 1,000 to 1,300 THB (roughly Rs 2,850 to Rs 3,700) per person, a full-day Phi Phi and Bamboo speedboat trip about 1,900 to 2,900 THB (Rs 5,400 to Rs 8,300), and a private longtail from around 2,500 THB (Rs 7,100) per boat. National park sites like Koh Rok, Koh Haa and the Hong Islands add a separate fee of roughly 300 to 400 THB.

What is the best time for snorkeling in Krabi?

November to April, the dry Andaman season, with calm seas and 15 to 20 metres of visibility. December to March is the clearest and busiest. May to October is monsoon: rougher water and lower visibility, when far-island trips like Koh Rok may close and only sheltered Ao Nang and Four Islands stops stay reliable.

Are there locations for expert snorkelers and divers?

Yes, there are deeper locations for veterans. The diving schools will take you there once you book your trip with them.

What will I see while snorkeling in Krabi?

Hard and soft corals, anemones and reef fish: parrotfish, sergeant majors, butterflyfish, moray eels and clownfish. At the better offshore sites, Koh Rok and Koh Haa, you have a good chance of harmless blacktip reef sharks and green turtles.

Is snorkeling or scuba diving better in Krabi?

Snorkeling is cheaper, needs no training and covers the same shallow reefs that hold most of the colour and fish, so it suits families and first-timers. Diving reaches deeper reef and bigger marine life but costs more and needs a course or certification. Many Krabi day trips let you do both from one boat.
