Best Time To Visit Phuket

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

The best time to visit Phuket is November to February, when the rain clears, the Andaman Sea settles into calm, clear water, and daytime highs hold around a comfortable 31 to 33 degrees Celsius. Phuket is Thailand's largest island, off the country's southern Andaman coast, and its weather runs on three broad seasons rather than four. Below you get every month at a glance, the 2026 festival calendar, the right window for diving and island hopping, and, if you are flying from India, how the seasons line up with airfares and school holidays.

Phuket Trip Snapshot

What our travellers actually book for Phuket, based on TravelTriangle trip data.

Metric What the data shows
Most-booked travel months November to February (peak)
Average trip length 5 to 7 nights
Most popular pairing Phuket + Krabi / Phi Phi
Cheapest booking window May to September (green season)

Best Time to Visit Phuket: At a Glance

Phuket has three seasons. A cool, dry peak from November to February, a hot shoulder from March to May, and a green monsoon from roughly May or June to October. Here is how they compare before we go month by month.

Season Months Daytime high Sea & crowds Verdict
Cool & dry (peak) Nov to Feb 31 to 33°C Calm, clear seas; busiest; highest prices Best overall. Book early.
Hot (shoulder) Mar to May 33 to 36°C Warm sea, rising humidity, thinning crowds Good value before the rain. April is hottest.
Monsoon (green) May/Jun to Oct 28 to 32°C Rough west-coast seas, fewest crowds, lowest prices Cheapest. Pack for rain. September is wettest.

So when should you go? For calm seas, blue skies and every boat tour running, aim for November to February and reserve hotels well ahead. Want the same sunshine for less? Late October and early March sit on the shoulder, drier than peak monsoon but noticeably cheaper. Travelling on a tight budget or chasing green, quiet beaches? June to September delivers the lowest fares, as long as you accept afternoon downpours and some cancelled sea crossings.

Phuket Weather Month by Month

This is the table to bookmark. Temperatures are daytime highs; rainfall is the monthly average with typical rainy days in brackets. The sea stays warm all year, around 28 to 30 degrees.

February Cool & dry 33°C 25 mm (3) Calm, clear Very high / high Driest, ideal
March Hot 34°C 55 mm (5) Calm, warming High / medium Great, hot builds
April Hot 35°C 130 mm (9) Warm, mostly calm Medium / medium Hottest; Songkran
May Monsoon onset 33°C 230 mm (17) Getting rough Low / low Rain begins, cheap
June Monsoon (green) 32°C 230 mm (16) Choppy, west coast Low / lowest Bargains, showers
July Monsoon (green) 31°C 250 mm (17) Choppy Low-medium / low Wet, good deals
August Monsoon (green) 31°C 270 mm (18) Choppy Low-medium / low Wet, green
September Monsoon (green) 31°C 360 mm (22) Roughest Lowest / lowest Wettest month
October Monsoon tapering 31°C 310 mm (20) Easing late month Low / low Rain eases; Veg Fest
November Cool & dry starts 31°C 200 mm (14) Calming Rising / rising Shoulder, seas settle
December Cool & dry 31°C 60 mm (7) Calm, clear Very high / peak Peak, festive

Best Time for Each Activity

The right month depends on what you came to do. Here is when each of Phuket's headline experiences is at its best.

Diving and the Similan Islands. The Similan Islands National Park, Phuket's marquee dive and snorkel trip, closes each year through the monsoon, roughly mid-May to mid-October. Plan liveaboards and day dives for November to April, when visibility is best.

Island hopping and snorkelling. Phi Phi, Coral, Racha and the Similans are all at their calmest and clearest November to April. In peak monsoon (June to September) crossings can be rough or cancelled, so keep plans flexible. See our Phuket island hopping guide for routes and operators.

Beaches and swimming. For safe, easy swimming, stick to November to April. During the monsoon, strong rip currents make the west-coast beaches risky; swim only where flagged and supervised.

Nightlife. Patong's bars and clubs run year-round, but the dry season nights of November to February, warm and rain-free, are the liveliest.

Surfing. The one thing the monsoon improves. Kata, Kalim and Nai Harn pick up rideable swell from May to October, when the surf schools open.

Festivals and Events Calendar 2026

Timing a trip around a festival adds colour, and some of these shift the mood of the whole island. Dates below are for 2026; confirm before you lock flights, as several follow the lunar calendar.

Festival / event 2026 dates Season What to expect
Phuket International Boat Show January Peak Yachts and marine trade at Royal Phuket Marina
Chinese New Year 17 February Peak Old Phuket Town lights up; large Thai-Chinese community
Songkran (Thai New Year) 13 to 15 April Hot Nationwide water fights; expect to get soaked
Phuket Bike Week Mid-April Hot Motorcycle rally around Patong
Phuket Vegetarian Festival Approx 10 to 18 October Late monsoon Nine-day Taoist festival; street processions, all-veg food
Loy Krathong Approx 24 November Shoulder Floating candle-lit krathongs
Phuket King's Cup Regatta Early December Peak Asia's biggest sailing regatta off Nai Harn

Best Time to Visit Phuket from India

Most guides are written for a global reader. If you are booking from India, the calendar looks a little different, because your airfares and holidays follow their own rhythm.

Getting there. Phuket is roughly a 4.5 to 6 hour flight from the major Indian metros, direct or one-stop from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our how to reach Phuket guide covers routes and connections in detail.

Airfares by season. Fares from India peak with the Phuket high season and the Indian festive break: December and January are the most expensive months to fly. The cheapest seats land in the monsoon, roughly May to September, when Phuket hotels also drop to their lowest rates. If your dates are flexible, a green-season trip can cost noticeably less for the same island.

Mapped to Indian holidays. Diwali, in late October or November, falls on the shoulder as the rain eases and seas calm, a sweet spot for value and weather. The Christmas and New Year break lands in peak season, so it is glorious but priciest, book early. The April to June summer school holidays coincide with Phuket's hottest, early-monsoon weeks, cheaper, but hot and increasingly wet.

Travelling with family. For families with children, November to February is the easiest choice: calm seas for beginners, every attraction open, and low illness-inducing humidity. It is also the safest swimming window, which matters with young kids.

Vegetarian and Jain travellers. If pure-veg food is a priority, time your trip with the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in October, when much of the island cooks strictly vegetarian for nine days and 'jay' (vegan) food is everywhere.

“If you are set on the Similan or Phi Phi boat tours, come November to April. In peak monsoon we see speedboat trips cancelled at short notice when the swell picks up,” says our TravelTriangle Thailand desk.

What to Pack by Season

Cool, dry season (Nov to Feb): light cottons for the day, one layer for breezy December evenings, reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, a hat and good sunglasses.

Hot season (Mar to May): the lightest, most breathable clothes you own, a refillable water bottle, high-SPF sunscreen and an umbrella for the odd Songkran soaking.

Monsoon (Jun to Oct): a packable rain jacket, quick-dry clothing, waterproof phone pouch, sandals with grip for wet paths, and a power bank, since island connectivity can drop in heavy rain.

For the full destination picture beyond the weather, see the Phuket travel guide, browse Thailand tour packages, or start with the wider Thailand tourism hub.

Seasonal timings and festival dates on this page are checked by our Thailand desk against Thai tourism and national-park sources.

Climate in Phuket

Summer Season in Phuket

From March the mercury climbs, peaking in April and early May at around 35 to 36 degrees with heavy humidity. Seas are still mostly calm early in this window, so it works well for beaches and boat trips, and prices ease from their December peak. Come prepared for strong sun and short tempers in the midday heat. April also brings Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, which is either the highlight of your trip or a soaking to plan around.

Monsoon Season in Phuket

The southwest monsoon brings the rain, and with it the lowest prices of the year. Highs ease to a humid 28 to 32 degrees, downpours are usually heavy but short, and the island turns lush and quiet. September is the wettest month. The catch is the sea: the Andaman west coast gets choppy, red warning flags go up on beaches like Patong, Karon and Kata, and some ferry and speedboat tours are cancelled when the swell builds. If you swim, respect the flags and the lifeguards. For travellers who want green scenery, room to breathe and the cheapest rates, the rainy season is genuinely underrated.

Winter Season in Phuket

This is the window most travellers picture when they think of Phuket. Days are dry and sunny, humidity drops, and highs sit in the pleasant 31 to 33 degree range, with December and January the coolest. The Andaman Sea turns calm and clear, so swimming, snorkelling and every island tour run without a hitch. The trade-off is company and cost: this is the busiest, priciest stretch of the year, and December holidays sell out first. Book flights and hotels several weeks ahead, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Hey Travel Trail, Dear Yugal I hope this review finds you in high spirits! I wanted to take a moment to express my utmost gratitude for organizing the most incredible trip to Thailand. From start to finish, every aspect of the journey was meticulously planned, and I couldn't have asked for a bett

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. From exploring the bustling streets of Bangkok to immersing myself in the natural wonders of Phuket, every destination left an indelible mark on my heart. I will undoubtedly recommend your travel agency to my friends, family, and colleagues who are seeking an extraordinary travel experience. Your attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to customer satisfaction are truly commendable. Once again, thank you for making my Thailand trip so special. Yugal was our travel agent. He was always available from the day we booked the trip till we completed our trip. He was always a call away and was helpful to resolve all the queries. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Phuket Travel FAQs

What is the best time to visit Phuket?

The best time to visit Phuket is November to February. Rainfall is at its lowest, humidity is comfortable, and the Andaman Sea is calm and clear, which makes it ideal for swimming, snorkelling, island hopping and every kind of water sport. It is also the busiest and most expensive season, so book flights and hotels ahead.

Which is the best season to visit Phuket?

The cool, dry season from November to February is the best overall. Temperatures throughout the year stay warm with only a slight seasonal shift, but this window pairs the driest weather with the calmest seas, so all the boat tours and beaches are open. March to May is a good-value alternative just before the monsoon.

What is the hottest month in Phuket?

April is the hottest month in Phuket, with daytime highs around 35 to 36 degrees and high humidity, followed closely by early May. It is also when Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, takes place, so the crowds and the heat both peak. Drink plenty of water and plan outdoor activity for the morning.

Is it good to visit Phuket in July?

July sits in the green monsoon season, so expect heavy but usually short afternoon showers and choppy seas that can cancel some boat tours. On the upside, you get the lowest hotel and flight prices of the year, lush scenery and far fewer crowds. If you are relaxed about the weather and value the savings, July can be a smart, budget-friendly choice.

Can you swim in Phuket during the rainy season?

You can, but with caution. During the monsoon (roughly May to October) the west-coast beaches such as Patong, Karon and Kata develop strong rip currents, and red warning flags are common. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and never past a red flag. Calm, sheltered bays and hotel pools are the safer bet in these months.

What is the cheapest time of year to go to Phuket?

The cheapest time to visit Phuket is the low season from May to October, when the monsoon brings the rain and both hotels and flights fall to their lowest rates. June to September is the best value of all. You trade some sunshine and the odd cancelled boat trip for genuinely low prices and quiet beaches.

    What is off-season for Phuket?

Phuket's off-season is the monsoon, which runs from about May or June to October. Daytime highs ease to a humid 28 to 32 degrees, September is the wettest month, and west-coast seas turn rough. It is the quietest and cheapest time to visit, well suited to travellers who prioritise price and green scenery over guaranteed sunshine.

How many days do you need in Phuket?

A stay of 4 to 7 days works well for Phuket. That gives you time for the main beaches, at least one island-hopping day trip to Phi Phi or the Similans, Old Phuket Town and the Big Buddha, without rushing. Add a few days if you plan to pair Phuket with Krabi or Phi Phi, as many travellers do.

What is the best time to visit Phuket from India?

From India, November to February gives the best weather but the highest airfares, peaking over the Christmas and New Year break. For value, target the shoulder around Diwali (late October to November) or fly in the May to September monsoon, when both flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and Phuket hotels are at their cheapest. Flights run about 4.5 to 6 hours.

What is the best time to visit Phuket with family?

For a family trip, November to February is the easiest choice. The seas are calm enough for children and beginner swimmers, humidity is low, and every attraction and boat tour is running. It is the safest swimming window of the year, which matters most with young kids, and the pleasant temperatures make full sightseeing days comfortable.
