Island Hopping In Phuket

Island Hopping In Phuket, Thailand

Explore nature’s bounty with Island Hopping in Phuket

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Phuket island hopping is the single best reason to base a Thailand trip on the Andaman coast. The island sits off the west coast of Thailand, ringed by 32 smaller islands scattered across the Andaman Sea, and a day boat can reach the closest of them in under 20 minutes. Phi Phi, James Bond Island, Coral Island and Racha are all within a morning’s ride, the piers are well signposted in English, and a shared speedboat day trip starts at roughly 1,500 THB (about Rs 3,900) plus a national park fee. This guide covers which islands to pick, how to reach each one, what a day trip costs and the best months to go.

Phuket Island Hopping at a Glance

• Go November to April. The Andaman Sea is calm and clear then; June to October is monsoon and many boats stop running.

• Budget from 1,500 THB (about Rs 3,900) for a shared speedboat day trip, plus a cash national park fee of roughly 300 THB to 500 THB per adult paid at the pier.

• Phi Phi and Maya Bay are the headline trip; James Bond Island and the Phang Nga Bay sea caves are the second; Coral and Khai Islands are the easy family half-days.

• Similan and Surin close every year from 15 May to 15 October for the monsoon, so plan those two for the dry season only.

• Most day tours leave from Chalong, Rassada or Bang Rong pier and include hotel pickup, lunch and snorkel gear. Park fees are almost always extra.

Phuket Island Hopping: How It Works

Almost nobody hops between the islands on their own boat. You book a day trip, a minivan collects you from your hotel between about 7 am and 8 am, and you are back by late afternoon. The boat runs a fixed loop of two to four islands with snorkel stops, a beach or two and a buffet lunch, then returns to the same pier. A standard shared speedboat carries 25 to 35 people; a small-group or private charter runs the same route with fewer stops and more time in the water. Thailand island tours from Phuket are far cheaper than comparable trips elsewhere in the region, which is why most visitors do at least two on a week-long stay.

Three piers handle nearly all of it. Chalong Pier on the south coast is the main speedboat departure point for Coral, Racha and Phi Phi. Rassada Pier in Phuket Town is where the big passenger ferries leave for Phi Phi. Bang Rong Pier and nearby Ao Po on the northeast coast serve Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island, Koh Yao and the Khai Islands. Your tour tells you which pier to expect, and the transfer is built into the price. For the full breakdown, see our island hopping how-to-reach guide and the timings page.

Best Islands to Visit on a Phuket Hopping Trip

Here is the quick-reference roster first, then the detail on each island below it. Pick one or two headline islands and let the day trip fill in the smaller stops around them.

Island Best for From Phuket Season
Phi Phi & Maya Bay Snorkelling, scenery, the classic day ~45 min speedboat Year-round
James Bond Island (Phang Nga) Limestone karsts, sea canoeing ~1 hr via Bang Rong Year-round
Coral Island (Koh Hae) Families, watersports, half-day ~15 min from Chalong Year-round
Racha Yai & Noi (Raya) Clearest water, diving, snorkelling ~45 min speedboat Nov to Apr best
Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai) White sand, shallow reef add-on to Phi Phi Nov to May
Hong Island (Ko Hong) Emerald lagoons, kayaking ~1 hr (Phang Nga) Nov to Apr best
Koh Yao (Yai & Noi) Quiet, rural, cycling ~45 min from Bang Rong Year-round
Khai Islands Quick family trip, calm shallows ~30 min from Bang Rong Year-round
Naka Island Calm resort island, close in ~15 min from Ao Po Year-round
Similan Islands World-class diving ~1.5 hr via Khao Lak 15 Oct to 15 May only
Surin Islands Pristine reefs, Moken villages ~2 hr via Khuraburi 15 Oct to 15 May only

Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

Phi Phi is the trip everyone pictures. The two islands, Phi Phi Don and the smaller, uninhabited Phi Phi Leh, sit about 45 minutes east of Phuket by speedboat. Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Leh, is the cove from the 2000 film The Beach; it reopened to visitors after a conservation closure and now runs a timed-entry system to protect the reef. A typical day includes snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon, a look at Viking Cave and Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don, then the ride back. Go on an early-bird departure if you can, because the bay fills up by mid-morning. See more on our Phi Phi Island page.

James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

James Bond Island, or Koh Tapu, is the slim limestone needle that appeared in the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun. It stands in Ao Phang Nga National Park, about an hour northeast of Phuket, in a bay full of sheer karst cliffs and hidden lagoons. The real draw is the sea canoeing: a longtail or a paddled canoe threads you through the sea caves and mangroves of Panak and Hong islands, some of which you can only enter at the right tide. Most trips also stop at the Muslim stilt village of Koh Panyee for lunch. This one is scenery and caves rather than swimming, so it pairs well with a snorkel island on another day.

Coral Island (Koh Hae)

Coral Island is the easy one. It is only about 15 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier, which makes it the go-to half-day for families and anyone who does not want a long boat ride. Long Beach and Banana Beach have soft sand, calm shallows and a reef close to shore, and the island is set up for parasailing, banana-boat rides and sea walking. You can do Coral as a relaxed morning and still have the afternoon free in Phuket. Check current ticket and activity charges on our island hopping entry-fees page.

Racha Islands (Racha Yai and Racha Noi)

Racha Yai and its wilder sister Racha Noi, sometimes spelled Raya, have the clearest water within easy reach of Phuket. Visibility here is a step up on Phi Phi, which is why dive schools run their beginner courses off Racha Yai. Racha Yai has a couple of quiet beach resorts if you want to overnight; Racha Noi is rockier, deeper and better for experienced divers. A day trip usually combines Racha with Coral Island on the way out or back.

Bamboo Island and Hong Island

Bamboo Island, or Ko Mai Phai, is a small sandbar of white sand and shallow reef just north of Phi Phi, and it is nearly always sold as an add-on to a Phi Phi day. Hong Island, or Ko Hong, sits over in the Krabi side of Phang Nga Bay and is built around a hidden emerald lagoon you paddle into through a gap in the cliffs. Both are calm-season islands: they are at their best from November to April and can be rough or closed off in the monsoon.

Koh Yao, Khai Islands and Naka Island

These three are for a slower, closer day. Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi sit between Phuket and Krabi and are the antidote to the busy islands: rice paddies, rubber plantations, a few homestays and almost no crowds, reached by ferry from Bang Rong. The Khai Islands (Khai Nok, Khai Nai and Khai Nui) are tiny sandbanks about 30 minutes out with shallow, calm water and fish feeding, which makes them a favourite quick trip for families with young children. Naka Island is a short 15-minute hop from Ao Po, calm and low-key, with an upmarket resort and easy swimming. None of the three needs a long boat ride.

Similan and Surin Islands

The Similan Islands are the reason serious snorkellers and divers come to this coast. Eleven granite-boulder islands with some of the best reefs in Thailand, they sit about 1.5 hours north via Khao Lak. The catch is the calendar: Mu Ko Similan National Park is open only from 15 October to 15 May, and closes 15 May to 15 October 2026 for the monsoon and reef recovery. The Surin Islands, further north near the Myanmar border, follow the same closed season and are home to the Moken sea-gypsy community and shallow reefs ideal for snorkelling. Plan both for the dry months only.

Best Phuket Island Hopping Routes

If you are doing two or three day trips, mix a headline snorkel day with a scenery-and-caves day so you are not repeating yourself. These four combinations cover most of what people book.

• Phi Phi + Maya Bay + Bamboo Island: the classic full-day snorkel loop, best on an early-bird speedboat.

• James Bond Island + Hong Island + sea canoeing: the Phang Nga Bay day, all karst cliffs and caves rather than swimming.

• Coral Island + Racha Yai: clear water and watersports, a good balance of easy and beautiful.

• Khai Islands (half-day) or Similan (dry season): Khai for a short family morning; Similan for the best diving, October to mid-May only.

Getting Around: Speedboat, Ferry or Longtail

The boat you take decides how far you can go and how fast. Three types cover every trip.

• Speedboat: the default for day tours. Reaches Phi Phi in about 45 minutes, handles two to four islands in a day, and is the only sensible choice for Racha, the Similans and the outer islands. Fastest, and the bumpiest in swell.

• Passenger ferry: the big boats from Rassada Pier take roughly two hours to Phi Phi. Slower and cheaper, better for transfers or an overnight stay than for a packed island-hopping day.

• Longtail boat: the local wooden boats you hire from Rawai or Chalong for short hops to Coral Island or a nearby beach. Cheapest and flexible, but slow and unsuited to open water when the sea is up.

Day tours leave from Chalong (Coral, Racha, Phi Phi), Rassada (Phi Phi ferries) and Bang Rong or Ao Po (Phang Nga, Koh Yao, Khai). A half-day trip runs about four to five hours, a full day about eight to nine, and a private charter lets you set the pace and skip the crowded stops.

Cost of Island Hopping in Phuket

Prices below are per adult for a shared speedboat day trip and were checked against Phuket operators in July 2026. The national park fee is almost always separate and paid in cash at the pier, so carry Thai baht. A quick rule: a shared day trip is 1,500 THB to 2,500 THB, a small-group or premium trip is 5,000 THB and up, and children usually pay a little less.

Day trip Islands Duration From (THB) From (INR approx) Park fee (extra, cash)
Coral Island half-day Coral (Koh Hae) ~4-5 hrs 1,200 ~Rs 3,100 None / small pier fee
Khai Islands Khai Nok / Nai / Nui ~5 hrs 1,000 ~Rs 2,600 ~100 THB
Phi Phi + Maya + Bamboo Phi Phi, Maya, Bamboo ~8-9 hrs 1,500 ~Rs 3,900 ~400 THB adult
Phi Phi early-bird Phi Phi (beat crowds) ~8 hrs 2,200 ~Rs 5,600 ~400 THB adult
James Bond + Phang Nga James Bond, Hong, canoe ~8 hrs 1,500 ~Rs 3,900 ~300 THB adult
Coral + Racha Coral, Racha Yai ~8 hrs 1,800 ~Rs 4,600 None / small pier fee
Similan day trip Similan (Oct-May) ~10 hrs 3,300 ~Rs 8,400 500 THB adult
Premium small-group Phi Phi or Phang Nga full day 5,310 ~Rs 13,500 as per island

What is usually included: hotel transfers both ways, the speedboat, an English-speaking guide, a buffet lunch, snorkel gear, life jackets, drinking water and insurance. What is not: national park fees (cash at the pier), tips, alcohol, and optional extras like parasailing, sea walking or a diving add-on. Always check whether the park fee is in the quoted price before you book.

Best Time for Island Hopping in Phuket

The Andaman Sea, not the calendar of festivals, decides your trip. From November to April the sea is calm and clear, the boats run on schedule and the snorkelling is at its best. December to February is the peak, with the best weather and the biggest crowds and prices. May to October is the southwest monsoon: rougher seas, more cancellations, and the outer islands close. Similan and Surin are shut every year from 15 May to 15 October, so if diving those is the goal, come in the dry season.

Season Months Sea conditions Good for
Peak dry December to February Calm, clear, reliable Everything; book ahead
Shoulder dry November, March, April Calm, fewer crowds Best value; all islands open
Monsoon May to October Rough, frequent cancellations Coral / near islands only

Book a Phuket Island Hopping Tour

The simplest way to string these day trips into one trip is to book a Phuket or Thailand package that already has the island days, transfers and hotels bundled in, then let a travel expert tune the islands to your dates. Browse Thailand tour packages for the full range, or go straight to a Phuket and Krabi package if you want the islands paired with Krabi, or a Bangkok and Phuket package to add the city. Every itinerary is customisable, so you can swap a Phi Phi day for James Bond Island or add a Similan diving day in the dry season.

Book the early 7 am speedboat to Phi Phi, not the mid-morning one. You reach Maya Bay before the crowd and the water is still glassy. Fares and park fees on this page are cross-checked by our Phuket desk against operator rate sheets and the Thai national-park schedule.

Planning Your Trip

Pick your headline islands first, then a season that keeps them open, then the pier and boat that fit. Two or three well-chosen day trips give you Phi Phi, a Phang Nga Bay cave day and an easy family beach without a single long transfer. When you are ready to turn it into an itinerary with hotels and transfers handled, browse Thailand tour packages or read the wider Phuket travel guide.

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Phuket Travel FAQs

How much does island hopping in Phuket cost?

A shared speedboat day trip starts at about 1,500 THB (roughly Rs 3,900) per adult and runs up to 2,500 THB for premium or early-bird departures. Small-group and private tours start around 5,000 THB. On top of the tour you pay a national park fee in cash at the pier, usually 300 THB to 500 THB per adult depending on the island. Children are generally charged less.

What is the best time for island hopping in Phuket?

November to April, when the Andaman Sea is calm and clear. December to February is peak season with the best weather and the highest prices. Avoid May to October, the monsoon, when seas are rough and boats are often cancelled. Note that the Similan and Surin islands close entirely from 15 May to 15 October.

Which islands are best for island hopping from Phuket?

Phi Phi and Maya Bay for the classic snorkel day, James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay for limestone scenery and sea caves, Coral Island for an easy family half-day, Racha for the clearest water and diving, and the Similan Islands for world-class reefs in the dry season. Bamboo, Hong, Khai, Koh Yao and Naka round out the smaller stops.

Can I go island hopping in Phuket without a tour?

Yes, for the near islands. You can hire a longtail boat from Rawai or Chalong for a self-planned trip to Coral Island or a nearby beach, and public ferries from Rassada reach Phi Phi. But for Racha, the Similans and Phang Nga Bay a booked speedboat tour is safer, faster and usually cheaper once you factor in fuel and park fees.

Which Phuket island hopping tour is best for families?

Coral Island and the Khai Islands. Both are close in, the boat rides are short, the water is shallow and calm, and there is easy snorkelling and fish feeding right off the beach. They work well as half-days, which suits younger children better than a full eight-hour Phi Phi trip.

    Is Phuket island hopping safe?

It is, with a licensed operator in the dry season. Reputable tours provide life jackets, brief you before snorkelling, and follow the national-park and weather rules. The real risk is the monsoon from May to October, when seas are rough; if a tour is cancelled for weather, take the cancellation seriously rather than pushing a cheaper boat to run.

Speedboat, ferry or longtail: which is better?

Speedboats for day trips: they reach Phi Phi in about 45 minutes and cover several islands in a day. Ferries from Rassada are slower and cheaper, better for transfers or an overnight stay. Longtail boats are the local option for short, flexible hops to Coral Island or a beach, but they are slow and not for open water in bad weather.

How many days are required for an island hopping tour in Phuket?

It depends on how many islands you want. Many travellers do two or three separate day trips over a four to five-night Phuket stay: one for Phi Phi, one for James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay, and a shorter half-day for Coral or Khai. Each island is a one-day or half-day trip, so you can build the pace around your holiday rather than doing it all at once.

Are there places to stay on the islands?

Yes, on the larger ones. Phi Phi Don, Racha Yai, Koh Yao and Naka have resorts and guesthouses, so you can overnight rather than day-trip. The smaller stops such as Maya Bay, Bamboo, Hong and the Khai Islands are day-visit only and have no accommodation. Most people base themselves in Phuket and take day trips out.
