Shankaracharya Temple sits on a hill above the city and gives the best view of Srinagar. Ahmedabad to Kashmir: Distance, Flights and Trains

Ahmedabad is about 1,230 km from Srinagar in a straight line and roughly 1,630 to 1,790 km by road, depending on the route you drive (via Udaipur and Jaipur, or via Delhi). Flying takes about 2 hours nonstop. The train takes a day and a half including the Vande Bharat leg. Driving takes 3 days.

By Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the airport for the Kashmir valley and sits about 14 km from the city. From Ahmedabad, IndiGo and SpiceJet operate nonstop flights that take about 2 hours 05 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, with morning departures that land in Srinagar before lunch. On days the nonstop is full, a one-stop flight via Delhi or Mumbai takes 5 to 7 hours. Your package cab meets you at arrivals for the drive to your hotel or houseboat. In winter, snow and fog can delay Srinagar flights, so avoid booking the last flight out on your departure day.

By Train

There is no direct train from Ahmedabad to Srinagar, but you can now go all the way by rail. Take a train from Ahmedabad to Jammu Tawi or Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. The options include the 12473 Sarvodaya Express (Gandhidham to Katra, weekly), 12475 Hapa to Katra, 12477 Jamnagar to Katra, 19415 Sabarmati to Katra and 19027 Vivek Express to Jammu Tawi. Plan for about 27 to 33 hours on board. From Jammu Tawi, the Vande Bharat 26401 leaves at 6:20 am, stops at Katra around 8:10 am and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 am. It runs every day except Tuesday. By Road

The road trip from Ahmedabad to Srinagar covers about 1,630 to 1,790 km over 2.5 to 3 days. The usual route goes through Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Jalandhar and Jammu on NH48 and NH44, then through the Chenani-Nashri and Navyug tunnels to Srinagar. There is no direct bus from Ahmedabad. We only suggest this for experienced drivers with time to spare. With children or elderly parents, a flight in and a package cab inside the valley is far less tiring. The package prices above are land only, and adding a return nonstop flight from Ahmedabad costs about Rs 12,000 to Rs 30,000 per person depending on the season.

1. Srinagar

Srinagar is where every trip from Ahmedabad starts and ends, since the airport and the railway station are both here. Plan at least one night on a Dal Lake houseboat. Take the sunrise shikara to the floating market, then spend the afternoon in the Mughal gardens. 2. Gulmarg

What's Special: Gulmarg Gondola, skiing, snow from December to March

Nearby Attractions: Kongdoori, Apharwat, Khilanmarg, St Mary's Church

Transportation Options: Cab from Srinagar (about 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hours)

Gulmarg is the place most Gujarati travellers come for, especially in winter. The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases. Phase 1 to Kongdoori costs about Rs 700 to Rs 800 and Phase 2 towards Apharwat about Rs 900 to Rs 1,000. Tickets are sold online only, so book the moment your dates are firm. The gondola closes for maintenance on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Most packages do Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar. Stay a night if you want first light on the snow.

3. Pahalgam

What's Special: Lidder river, pine forests, base for Aru and Betaab valleys

Transportation Options: Cab from Srinagar (about 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours), local union taxi for sightseeing

Pahalgam, often called the Valley of Shepherds, sits where the Lidder river runs out of the mountains, with pine slopes on both sides. It is the best overnight stop for families because the hotels are close to the river and the walks are easy. Sightseeing to Aru and Betaab valleys is done in local union taxis, as outside cabs are not allowed on those roads. Baisaran meadow and Chandanwari have stayed closed to tourists in 2026, so check with your agent before you plan your day around them.

4. Sonamarg

What's Special: Thajiwas Glacier, Sindh river, gateway to the Zojila pass

Nearby Attractions: Thajiwas Glacier, Vishansar Lake trek, Nilagrad river

Transportation Options: Cab from Srinagar (about 80 km, 2.5 to 3 hours), union taxi or pony to Thajiwas

Sonamarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold", is a hill station about 80 km from Srinagar with meadows and a river that winds through them, which makes it popular with trekkers. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road from Srinagar stays open most of the winter. Heavy snow can still shut it for a day or two. The pony ride or walk up to Thajiwas Glacier is the main outing, and it is paid locally.

5. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg

What's Special: Quiet meadows, fewer crowds than Gulmarg

Nearby Attractions: Shaliganga river (Doodhpathri), Nilnag lake (Yusmarg)

Transportation Options: Cab from Srinagar (about 42 km and 47 km)

Add one of these on a 7-night or longer trip. Both are easy day trips from Srinagar with green meadows and streams, and they are a good change of pace after the busy Gulmarg day. Ask your agent to swap a Srinagar sightseeing day for one of them.

Summer

March to June, Kashmir's spring (March and April) and early summer (May and June), is the most popular time to go from Ahmedabad. When Gujarat crosses 40°C in May, Srinagar stays between 15°C and 30°C. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden usually opens in late March and runs into April. School summer vacation in May and June is the busiest window of the year for Ahmedabad bookings. Fares and houseboat rates peak then, so book 45 to 60 days ahead.

Autumn

September to November brings clear skies and the chinar trees turning red and gold. October and November cover the Diwali break, which is the second big window for Gujarati families. The weather is crisp but not freezing, and it suits seniors.

Winter

December to February is snow season. Temperatures in Srinagar drop to around minus 2°C at night and lower in Gulmarg, which turns into a ski slope. 5 nights and 6 days is the sweet spot from Ahmedabad. The nonstop flight saves a day at each end, so 5 nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing. A 2 or 3 night trip suits a long weekend in Srinagar with a Gulmarg day trip. With 7 to 9 nights you can add Doodhpathri, a second Pahalgam night, or Vaishno Devi at Katra on the way in.

Is Kashmir Safe for Tourists from Ahmedabad in 2026?

The main tourist circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg is open, and thousands of Gujarati travellers visit every season. Security is visible on highways and at tourist sites. A few spots, such as Baisaran meadow above Pahalgam, have stayed closed, so follow your driver's and agent's advice on the day. Check the Jammu and Kashmir government's travel updates before you fly. Indian citizens need only a government photo ID for the main areas, although Gurez and areas near the Line of Control need a separate permit. Postpaid mobile connections work across the valley, but prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir may not, so carry a postpaid number or use hotel Wi-Fi.
