By Rail

Chandigarh Junction runs trains toward Kalka, from where the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train climbs to Shimla through 100-odd tunnels. It is slower than the road and does not reach Manali or the Kangra side, but for Shimla it is the most scenic budget-friendly way up. Book the toy train well ahead in season, it sells out.

By Air

Chandigarh airport (IXC) has daily flights toward the hills and is the nearest airport to lower and central Himachal, so many travellers fly in and start their road trip here. Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar) and Kangra (Gaggal) have small airports for the odd seasonal flight, but road remains the reliable way once you are in the mountains.
