How to Reach Kasauli from Chandigarh by Train, Cab, Bus and Road

Short on time? Here is the quick verdict. The cheapest way is an HRTC bus toward Dharampur or Parwanoo, from about Rs 100. The most scenic is the train to Kalka followed by a taxi, and rail buffs can even ride the Kalka to Shimla toy train part of the way. But for most people a direct cab or a self-drive wins, because it runs door to door and handles the final hill climb without a change. There is no useful flight, since Chandigarh is where the nearest airport already is. The table below sets all four road-and-rail options side by side.

By Train via Kalka

Search for a Chandigarh to Kasauli train and every booking site will tell you the same thing: there is no direct service, because Kasauli sits off the rail map. What you actually book is a Chandigarh to Kalka train, and Kalka is the nearest railhead, about 25 km from Kasauli. It is a quick leg, roughly 30 km, and several daily trains cover it in 30 to 45 minutes. The three worth knowing are below.

Fares run from about Rs 45 in second class up to roughly Rs 1,175 in the premium Shatabdi classes, so the train is the budget pick even before you count the short last mile. From Kalka you finish the trip to Kasauli by taxi in around 45 minutes, or by local bus. If you have time to spare, switch at Kalka to the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed route, and get off at Dharampur, the closest halt to Kasauli at about 12 km. The direct Kalka taxi is quicker, but the toy train is the ride people remember. In peak season, book Shatabdi seats a few days ahead, as the Kalka route fills fast.

By Cab or Taxi from Chandigarh

A cab is the simplest door-to-door option, and it is the one many families and couples pick. A one-way outstation taxi from Chandigarh to Kasauli runs from about Rs 950 to Rs 1,300 for a sedan, with app cabs and aggregators quoting the lower end and a private full-day rental closer to Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500. The drive is 58 to 60 km and takes about two hours. The advantage over the train and bus is that the cab climbs the final hill road and drops you right at your Kasauli or Dharampur hotel, with no change of vehicle. Arriving by rail instead? Shared taxis wait at Kalka station and are a cheaper way to cover just the last 25 km.

By Road and Self-Drive

The self-drive from Chandigarh to Kasauli is one of the easiest hill runs in the region: about 58 to 60 km on NH-5, taking close to two hours. The route runs through Zirakpur and Parwanoo, then climbs past Dharampur for the last stretch into Kasauli. It is smooth, mostly four-lane highway until the final winding section, so it works even on a first hill drive. There is an alternative approach via Kurali that is longer at around 72 km, useful mainly if you are coming from the western side of the city. Reckon on Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500 for fuel and tolls in a petrol car, and start early to clear the Zirakpur bottleneck.

By Bus from Chandigarh

Buses are the cheapest way up. HRTC and private operators run from Chandigarh’s ISBT Sector 43 toward Shimla and Kalka, with ordinary fares from about Rs 100 and Volvo services up to around Rs 500. There is no bus that terminates in Kasauli itself, so you get down at Dharampur or Parwanoo on NH-5 and finish the last few kilometres by shared taxi. The full journey takes about two and a half to three hours including the transfer. If you are travelling light and watching the budget, the bus to Dharampur plus a short cab is hard to beat on price.
