Key Destinations in Spiti Valley
The headline stop for most travellers is Key Monastery, the biggest and one of the oldest gompas in the valley, stacked like a fort above the Spiti River near Kaza. From there the classic circuit strings together Kaza as its base town, the twin lakes and monasteries of the upper valley, and side treks that climb over the passes toward Ladakh (Tso Moriri via Parang La) and Kinnaur (Pin-Bhaba Pass). You do not need to trek to feel the scale of it, though. Even the drive leaves most people quiet, watching the brown-and-ochre Himalaya roll past under a sky that stays a hard, cloudless blue.
Food in Spiti leans Tibetan and Ladakhi. Expect momos, thukpa, butter tea, and the local barley brews chang and arak in the villages, with the widest choice of cafes in Kaza: Dragon Restaurant, Sachin Kunga, Cafe Kunzum Top and Yak Cafe are the ones travellers come back for. Pick any package below and a local agent will rebuild the itinerary around what you actually want to see. For the full food and culture rundown, the Spiti travel guide goes deeper than a booking page should.
Iconic Villages of Spiti: Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Kibber, Chicham and Gue
Spiti's real signature is its cluster of record-holding villages on the plateau above Kaza. They sit close together, so most 6-day-plus packages fit three or four of them into a single day of driving. This is the part of the valley the competitors name and the one worth building your trip around.
• Langza. A village at about 4,400 metres watched over by a giant golden Buddha statue that faces the valley. The surrounding slopes are a fossil bed, Spiti was under the Tethys sea millions of years ago, and local kids will show you marine ammonite fossils in the rock.
• Hikkim. Home to the world's highest post office at roughly 4,440 metres (PIN 172114). Post a card to yourself from here; it is the most-shared photo travellers bring back from Spiti.
• Komic. Billed as the highest village in the world connected by a motorable road, near 4,590 metres, with the small Tangyud Monastery on its edge.
• Kibber. A high village at about 4,270 metres beside the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, prime snow-leopard country in winter and a common overnight stop.
• Chicham Bridge. Asia's highest suspension bridge, strung about 4,145 metres above the Samba-Lamba gorge, linking Kibber and Chicham. Opened in 2017, it cut a long detour down to minutes.
• Gue. A village near the Tibet border known for a naturally preserved 500-year-old monk's mummy, still seated, discovered when the old stupa broke open. It is one of the strangest and most memorable stops in the valley.
Beyond the villages, most itineraries also fold in the cliff-hanging Dhankar Monastery and its high lake, the whitewashed Tabo Monastery, and the frozen-clear nights that make Spiti one of the best places in India for stargazing and astrophotography. Staying in a village homestay in Langza or Komic, eating with the family, is the closest thing to living the valley rather than passing through it.
Best Time to Visit Spiti and When the Manali-Kaza Road Opens
The honest answer is mid-May to early October, and the deciding factor is the road, not the temperature. The Manali circuit crosses Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La, which stay under snow through winter and typically open only from late May or June until they close again around October or November. The Shimla circuit through Kinnaur stays open far longer, often most of the year, which is why winter Spiti trips run in from Shimla and turn back before Kunzum. Plan around the season that matches your appetite.
Spiti in Summer (March to June)
The summer window from roughly March to June is the easiest time to visit. Weather is pleasant by Spiti standards, most routes are open by late May, and it is the ideal stretch for sightseeing and first-timers. Daytime temperatures sit around 4 to 15 degrees Celsius, and nights stay noticeably colder, so pack layers even in June.
Spiti in Monsoon (July to September)
Monsoon is the time to be cautious. Spiti itself is a rain shadow desert and stays fairly dry, but the approach roads through Kinnaur and around Rohtang are prone to landslides and slippery stretches from July to September. Trips still run, but build buffer days in and avoid planning treks in the heaviest weeks.
Spiti in Winter (October to February)
From October to February the valley freezes and most high roads block, so winter trips come in from the Shimla side only and centre on Kaza, Kibber and the snow-leopard expeditions the region is famous for. Temperatures drop below minus 4 degrees Celsius and colder at night. It is a hard, beautiful trip for travellers who want snow and solitude and are ready for the cold.
How to Reach Spiti, and the Permits You Need
Spiti has no airport or railway station of its own, so every trip finishes on the road. Two circuits get you in. From Shimla you drive up through Kinnaur (Narkanda, Reckong Peo, Nako, Tabo) to Kaza, a gradual climb that helps you acclimatise and stays open most of the year. From Manali you cross Rohtang and Kunzum La straight into the upper valley, a shorter but higher and rougher route that is open in summer only. The best-loved plan is to enter from Shimla and exit to Manali so the altitude gain is gradual.
The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 245 km from Kaza on the Manali side, with Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport serving the Kinnaur side. The closest railheads are Shimla (narrow-gauge) and Joginder Nagar, both several hours short of the valley, so from either you continue by cab, bus or bike. From Chandigarh it is about 522 km and 12 hours of driving via Shimla or via Manali and Rohtang. Our packages include private transport and a driver who knows the passes, which on these roads is worth far more than it sounds.
Permits and Inner Line for Spiti
Indian nationals do not need a permit to travel the main Spiti circuit, but if your route crosses Rohtang Pass from Manali you need the online Rohtang permit, which we arrange. The stretch near the Tibet border between Sumdo, Gue and Tabo lies in an inner-line zone: Indian travellers are generally fine on the highway, while foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit, easiest to obtain at Reckong Peo or Kaza. Carry a government photo ID at all times, and if you are a foreign national, tell your agent early so the permit is ready before you reach the checkpoint.
Places to Visit in Spiti
A quick tour of the stops the experts build almost every Spiti itinerary around.
Key Monastery
The most photographed monastery in Spiti, a 1,000-year-old Tibetan-Buddhist gompa at about 13,668 feet, rising in tiers above the Spiti River near Kaza. Time your visit for the early-morning prayers if you can.
Chandratal Lake
The crescent-shaped 'moon lake' at around 4,300 metres on the Samudra Tapu plateau, ringed by scree slopes and cirques that mirror in its blue water. It sits on the Manali side near Kunzum La, and lake-side camping here (well below the lake itself, to reduce altitude risk) is a trip highlight in summer.
Kaza
The largest town and commercial hub of the valley, split into old Kaza Khas and newer Kaza Soma along the Spiti River. It is the base for the plateau villages, the place to stock up, refuel and eat well, and the natural overnight point before heading to Langza, Hikkim and Komic.
Nako
A scenic Kinnaur-side village at about 12,000 feet built around Nako Lake, a common and gentle acclimatisation halt on the Shimla circuit as you climb toward the higher valley.
Kinnaur
The green, apple-orchard district you pass through on the Shimla approach, framed by the Kinner Kailash range. Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul here make a worthwhile day or two before Spiti turns to cold desert.
Things to Do in Spiti
Your shortlist of what travellers actually rate, from soft to serious.
Village-Hopping and Homestays
The most rewarding thing to do in Spiti costs almost nothing: drive the plateau loop through Langza, Hikkim, Komic and Kibber, cross the Chicham bridge, and stay a night in a family homestay. Evenings mean butter tea, home-cooked thukpa and some of the clearest star fields you will ever stand under.
Bike Tours
Spiti is a bucket-list ride. A cold desert valley of grey-brown mountains, thin air and river crossings, the Shimla-to-Manali loop on a Himalayan or similar is one of India's classic motorcycle routes. Go in summer, ride within your limits, and let the support vehicle carry the luggage.
Trekking: Hampta Pass and Pin Valley
Hampta Pass, at about 4,270 metres on the Pir Panjal, is the gentle crossover trek that links green Kullu to stark Spiti and is doable for reasonably fit beginners. For something wilder, the Pin Valley and Pin-Parvati routes push deeper into the national park. Trek only in the clear summer window, never in monsoon.
Spiti Trip Cost and Budget: Are There Packages Under Rs 10,000?
Straight answer: our customised Spiti packages start at Rs 17,000 per person, and that is the honest floor for a trip that includes stays, transport, a driver and permit help. You will see 'Spiti under Rs 10,000' listings elsewhere, and it helps to know what they usually mean. Those are almost always shared backpacker group departures, Delhi-to-Delhi or Manali-to-Manali, where you split a tempo-traveller with 12 others, sleep in shared camps or dorms, and the price excludes your travel to Himachal and most meals.
For a private, customisable trip the realistic range is Rs 17,000 to Rs 35,000 per person for 6 to 9 days, depending on season, hotel grade and group size, with bike and premium loops running higher. Travelling in a group of four to six is the single biggest way to bring the per-head cost down, since transport and driver are shared. If a tight budget is the priority, tell your agent up front and they will build the leanest honest version rather than sell you a floor that does not exist.

| Spiti camping | 6N/7D | Rs 19,999 | Chandratal and plateau nights under canvas in summer |
| Family getaway | 6N/7D | Rs 29,500 | Families wanting comfort stays and a gentler pace |

How to Choose the Right Spiti Package
Four quick ways to narrow it down.
• By purpose. Photography and villages point to a plateau-heavy loop through Langza and Komic; families lean to the comfort circuit; riders want the bike tour. Browse the wider Himachal range if Spiti alone feels like a lot for a first Himalayan trip.
• By budget. Rs 17,000 to Rs 22,000 gets the core group circuit; Rs 29,000-plus buys private transport, better hotels and a slower pace. Group size moves this more than anything.
• By duration. A 5N/6D trip covers Kaza and the headline monasteries; 7 to 9 nights adds the plateau villages, Chandratal and Kinnaur without rushing the altitude.
• By season. Mid-May to October for the full Manali-side loop; winter runs from Shimla only. See the season guide above, or the full Spiti travel guide for month-by-month detail.
Important Tips and Safety for Your Spiti Tour
• Enter from Shimla and exit to Manali. The climb from Shimla is gradual and gives your body time to adjust to the altitude, which cuts the risk of mountain sickness.
• Take Acute Mountain Sickness seriously. Do not ignore headaches, nausea or breathlessness; descend if symptoms build, and talk to your driver early.
• Avoid an overnight at Chandratal on the Manali side, especially with young kids, because the jump in altitude raises AMS risk. Camp lower and visit the lake by day.
• Carry the right permit. Foreign nationals need an inner-line permit for the border stretch; if you cross Rohtang from Manali you need the online Rohtang permit, which we arrange.
• Pack for real cold even in summer. Nights drop below freezing on the plateau regardless of the season.
• Watch for shooting stones on the cut-mountain roads, and never rush a river crossing; wait for your driver's call.
• Try the local food. Momos, thukpa and butter tea are everywhere, and the Kaza cafes do a good mix of Indian and Tibetan.
• For a maiden trip, avoid the deep-winter months of October to April unless you have specifically booked a Shimla-side snow trip.
What to Pack for Spiti
• A heavy down or shell jacket, plus thermals for upper and lower body
• Warm socks (several pairs), sturdy trek shoes and comfortable outdoor shoes
• Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm; the UV at altitude is intense
• A basic first-aid kit and Diamox for AMS, taken on medical advice
• Power bank, torch and charging cables; power and network are patchy in the villages
• A photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); foreign nationals carry passport plus permit
• A raincoat or shell for the monsoon-prone approach roads, and refillable water

FAQs About Spiti Tour Packages
Will I get mobile network and internet in Spiti?
Connectivity is limited and postpaid-only in much of the valley. BSNL and Jio postpaid work in Kaza and a few larger villages; prepaid SIMs mostly do not work here as it is a border region. Expect long no-signal stretches on the road and in villages like Langza and Komic. Download offline maps, tell family your rough plan in advance, and treat Spiti as a genuine digital detox.
Do I need permits for Spiti Valley?
Indian nationals do not need a permit for the main Spiti circuit. If your route crosses Rohtang Pass from Manali you need the online Rohtang permit, which we arrange. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the border stretch near Sumdo, Gue and Tabo, easiest to get at Reckong Peo or Kaza. Tell your agent your nationality when booking so any permit is ready before you reach the checkpoint.
How many days are enough for a Spiti Valley trip?
Six nights and seven days is the sweet spot for most travellers: enough to cover Kaza, Key Monastery, the plateau villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komic, and Chandratal without rushing the altitude. Five nights works if you focus on the core stops. Add Kinnaur (Kalpa, Chitkul) and you are looking at eight or nine days. Never try to do the full loop in under five nights, as the fast altitude gain is what makes people sick.
How much does a Spiti Valley trip cost, and are there packages under Rs 10,000?
Our customised Spiti packages start at Rs 17,000 per person and typically run Rs 17,000 to Rs 35,000 for a 6 to 9 day trip, depending on season, hotels and group size. 'Under Rs 10,000' listings you see elsewhere are usually shared backpacker group departures that exclude your travel to Himachal and use dorms or shared camps. Travelling as a group of four to six is the best way to lower the per-head cost.
What is the best time to visit Spiti, and when is the Manali-Kaza road open?
Mid-May to early October is the best time, because that is when the Manali-Kaza road over Rohtang and Kunzum La is usually open. March to June is the easiest window for first-timers. The Shimla circuit through Kinnaur stays open most of the year, so winter trips (roughly November to February) run in from Shimla only and centre on Kaza and the snow-leopard region.
Is Spiti safe for first-timers, and how do I avoid altitude sickness?
Yes, with sensible planning. Enter from Shimla so the altitude gain is gradual, keep two easy days at the start, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol early in the trip. Do not overnight at Chandratal on the Manali side, especially with children. Carry Diamox on medical advice and take any headache or breathlessness seriously. Our drivers know the warning signs and the descent routes.
Which is better, Leh-Ladakh or Spiti?
They are different trips. Ladakh is bigger, more developed and busier, with grand monasteries and famous lakes. Spiti is rawer, quieter and cheaper, with a more intimate, village-scale feel and fewer crowds. If you want dramatic scale and easier logistics, choose Ladakh; if you want authenticity, homestays and a slower Himalayan valley, choose Spiti. This page covers Spiti only; Ladakh packages are listed separately.
How long is the drive from Chandigarh to Spiti?
It is about 522 km and roughly 12 hours of driving, done in stages over two days rather than in one go. You can travel via Shimla and Kinnaur, the gentler acclimatisation route, or via Manali and Rohtang Pass in summer. Our packages include private transport and a driver experienced on these mountain roads.
What are the most famous attractions in Spiti?
The highlights are Key Monastery, Chandratal Lake, Kaza town, and the plateau villages of Langza (giant Buddha and fossils), Hikkim (world's highest post office), Komic and Kibber, plus the Chicham bridge and the cliff-top Dhankar and Tabo monasteries. Most 6-day-plus itineraries cover the majority of these.
Is Spiti safe for trekking during the monsoon?
It is best avoided. While Spiti itself is a rain-shadow desert, the approach roads through Kinnaur and around Rohtang are prone to landslides and mudslides from July to September, and trekking routes get slippery and risky. Plan treks like Hampta Pass or Pin Valley for the clear summer window instead.
Which languages and food will I find in Spiti?
The local languages are Bhoti and the Lahauli-Spiti dialect, and almost everyone also speaks Hindi. Food is Tibetan and Ladakhi: momos, thukpa, butter tea, and the barley brews chang and arak. Kaza has the widest choice of cafes, including Dragon Restaurant, Sachin Kunga, Cafe Kunzum Top and Yak Cafe.
