Adventure Activities Istanbul

Istanbul is an exquisite collage of culture and along with it comes a vast array of activities that you can indulge in this city.

From buzzing markets during the daytime to a lively night-time aura to tasting the local flavours, there is no dearth of unique and unusual things to do in Istanbul.

Nightlife in Istanbul

Istanbul has a nightlife that can put many cities to shame. Along the Bosphorus Strait, there are many open-air and in-house locations which are perfect to find fun things to do in Istanbul at night. You can find one of the rooftop bars, or a hookah joint or attend a party in a nightclub. Ortakoy and Babek are two localities with some happening nightlife scenes in the waterfront area.

Shopping in Istanbul

15 minutes walk away from Hagia Sophia is the Grand Bazar of Istanbul. Over 500 years old and spreading over a maze of 60 interconnected streets, this market is in true sense, the ‘grandest’ of all. A little far away is the famous Spice Bazar. For food stalls and fresh products, take a tour of the local markets – Yesilkoy, Kadikoy, Besiktas and others.

Here are some of the best things to do in Istanbul.

1. Take a cruise in Bosphorus Strait

How often does one get the chance of stepping foot in two continents in one trip? Istanbul lets you do that and that too in style. Bosphorus Strait divides Istanbul into two halves – the western part is in Europe and the eastern part is in Asia. The cruise can be pricey, but the views of the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, the ruins of a pre-Ottoman fortress and having a good lunch of Turkish cuisine are worth the hype.

2. Visit a Turkish bath –Hamam

Hamams were community baths during the Ottoman era, where people used to meet and socialise. Many say that it was the elite’s way of discussing sensitive matters without being overheard. Now they are like a Turkish counterpart of spa or Jacuzzi and one of the top things to do in Istanbul. It might feel unusual at first to get bathed and scrubbed by a stranger, but the steam and bubble will kick in the relaxation mode soon.

3. Taste Turkish flavours

Ever since the days it was known as Constantinople, this city has been popular for its vast array of flavours. Find a haunt to taste Turkish kebabs, which are some of the best in the world. Ask for local recommendation. Also try the commonest dish – pita bread and hummus, Lahmacun – the traditional Turkish pizza, and the rich, authentic blend of Turkish coffee, and the sweet treats of Turkish Delights.

4. Visit local markets

There is a reason why Turkish Bazars are part of the legend. These places have seen unimaginable amount of trade since the birth of the city. Some of the best local markets to visit are Fatih, Kadikoy, Ulus, Besiktas and Yesilkoy market. The noise and crowd might seem overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, the experience is amazing. Visiting the local markets is one of the best free things to do in Istanbul.

5. Take a ride in the streetcar

The tramline of Istanbul is quite historic. On an evening of leisure, the best thing to do in Istanbul at night is to hop on it and ride all the way to Taskim Square and view the monument of the republic – one of the finest things to see in Istanbul city. You can get off anywhere in between and finish the rest of the tour walking as well.

I recently returned from an amazing trip to Turkey, and I must say it was one of the best travel experiences I've had! Ketan's 11 days trip to Istanbul

Our Turkey trip for 10N, 11D with a family of 5 was very memorable thanks to TFT. TFT team of Nishant & Anu were involved right from beginning of tour planning, customisation of itinerary, providing options during pre booking period. During travel, WhatsApp group was created for coordinating with local vendors & TFT team was very actively involved during the trip to Answer any queries. All local sightseeing including local pick-up, guide etc were very good and we did not face any issues during travel. Only time I faced challenge was on clarity of invoicing between TFT & TT and was sorted out promptly. Will recommend for anyone planning travel to Turkey. We visited Kusadasi, Bodrum, Antalya, Capadoccia, Istanbul and the entire trip was wonderfully planned by TFT.

Overall the trip was fantastic. The itinerary was planned good but the accommodations for first city (Antalya-turkey)was very very very pathetic rest where better….However, one area that would be improve is the clarity of additional cost for adventure sports….

Rituraj's 9 days trip to Istanbul

I think last hotel could be better as that is the only one not suggested by me. It is a good hotel but the expectation setting from the pictures provided was different.

Sarhanya's 8 days trip to Istanbul

Imagine taking a tour with a someone who figures out your preferences before you say anything, makes arrangements that are exactly to your taste, That’s what I got from my Fly High Global Turkey Organizer! I contacted FHG (in a blind internet search) with only a general statement of the amount of time I had available and the towns I was most interested in visiting. Mr. Kamil responded almost immediately, asking a few questions and making several good suggestions. A few days later I had a detailed itinerary and very reasonable quote. I was hesitated, at the initial as they dint have a website or Instagram page either much review about there agency but decided to proceed only coz that i had trust on the person KAMIL who planned my itinerary of my choice. I must say this is one of the best travel decisions I’ve ever made! I had an amazing week long tour for 9 days and covered cites Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Antalya. Pickups were on time, very nice Benz vans, small groups, tour guides who spoke English well and knew the history of the place, and overall, well organized. What’s most surprising is that despite being extraordinary, their prices are truly ordinary. Everything was very much reasonably priced with absolutely no hidden fees or charges. It is hard to believe, but they really do offer exceptional quality as well as pricing! No second thoughts needed! Just trust them! You will not regret!

Asmita's 9 days trip to Istanbul

We booked our Turkey trip through Travel Triangle and through Travel Lykke. The trip went as planned. However, we felt that we could have been offered more than the standardized tour packages available in Turkey as we had taken a customized tour package. E.g. The Green Tour in Cappadocia covering entire day has hardly any sights, activities covered. The Selime Monastry is a regular cave like structure which is 1,5 hrs one way and totally not worth the time. Due to which we couldn't cover some of the nearest attractions like Uchisar Castle or activities like ATV ride which are way more engaging than the monastry. Even in Istanbul, the day tour covered only Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace and post lunch we were taken to Grand Bazaar where we were on our own. Galata Tower, Basillica Cistern like attractions were not included in the tour and had to be done on our own. The Antalya tour also had 5 hrs sitting in the bus out of 10 hrs of day travel and covered only the waterfalls and Mediterrnean sea boat ride. The old town was only a locality with no attractions worth the time. We wanted to cover paragliding in Fethiye, however, the transport offered by Travel agent was very expensive. We had to fund our own transfer and paragliding in Alanya instead of doing it in Fethiye.
