History of Dolby Theatre  

Costing a total of $94 million to build it under the expert guidance of David Rockwell, the theatre broke ground in 1997; the theatre was built specifically to bring to life the grandeur and magnitude of the Academy Awards. Under the sponsorship of Eastman Kodak until February 2012, it hosted numerous live concerts and shows until Kodak declared bankruptcy.

The name of the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles was briefly changed to Hollywood and Highland, before it was renamed as current on May 1, 2012. The theatre was also home to Cirque du Soleil show, Iris, an acrobatic journey through the world of cinema, which made significant changes to the theatre before it shut down in January 2013.

After hosting the Academy Awards in 2013, Dolby theatre was back in the headlines as it also reopened for touring acts.

The attractions of Dolby Theatre lie in the journey from the entrance to the show and not in any particular thing alone. The experience begins at the grand entrance set back from the road, and a two story awards walk leading up to a sweeping staircase that will take you to the main entrance. The Grand five-story lobby has a great spiral staircase at its center topped by an oval, beautifully lit dome.

The audience chamber is highlighted by an enchanting looping structure cleverly used to hide and support the grid for lighting. Designed to draw attention to the stage and to increase the intimacy between the performers and patrons, reflective ribs are used to give the walls a continuous flow.

The main stage of the Dolby Theatre is one of the largest in the nation 120 m wide and 75 m deep. theatre tours depart every 30 minutes and are a unique way of giving you a glimpse of the ultra-glamorous Oscar Awards and also offers architectural and historical highlights of the Dolby Theatre, LA.

Having hosted Oscars since its inception in the year 2001, the Dolby Theatre is now teamed up with the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for large-scale theatre productions coming to Los Angeles.
