Clock Tower in Dehradun is situated at the heart of the valley. It is often considered as the city center. Just as the name suggests, the tower comes with a huge clock that has been the center of attraction of many visitors. It is situated at a distance of 2 km from the Dehradun railway station and marks the beginning of the iconic Rajpur Road.

Popularly known as Ghanta Ghar, the construction of this famous tourist attraction started in the year 1948 and completed in the year 1953, Clock Tower Dehradun is a famous landmark and is a famous tourist spot. It has been a significant part of the town’s glory. It is the center point of all the major markets of Dehradun like the commercial centers, shops GPO’s, etc and is one of the most crowded areas in town. This clock has 6 faces that are not operational now and has names of the freedom fighters of Dehradun engraved on this amazing landmark in gold plaque. Architecture of Clock Tower

The Clock Tower Dehradun is made up of bricks and stones and it has stairs in the middle to go to the upper floors. It has beautiful semicircular windows that add to its beauty and makes it a tourist place that people appreciate and admire.

Style: Its architecture has been inspired by rare Greco style architecture which gives it a unique look. This marvelous structure took about 5 years to complete. There is a gold plate on which the names of the freedom fighters who participated in this struggle for freedom are engraved.

Location: This tower is located on Rajpur road and has numerous markets and business centers surrounding it. People often click pictures in front of this beautiful landmark when they visit Paltan Bazar. Another unique aspect of this landmark is that it is situated in the middle of the main roads they are Rajpur road, Chakrata road, Haridwar road, and Paltan Bazaar road meets at Clock Tower. All the autos and buses pass through this amazing Clock Tower in Dehradun. It is located near the parade ground and is also close to the railway station that is Dehradun Railway station which is just 2 km away.

Height: This monument is 85m tall and has six faces each of which had an impressive clock that is not functional now.

History of Clock Tower

It is an important historical place. Inaugurated by the much-respected Lal Bahadur Shastri, it was a renowned landmark of the city even before India got its independence and was built by the Britishers. Sarojani Naidu laid the base of this beautiful monument in 1948 when she was the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that the ticking of the Clock Tower, Dehradun (when it was functional) could be heard from far off places of this hilly city. Originally this monument was named Balbir tower. This tower represented and marked the independence of India. Tourists from all over the world visit this place and is a major heritage site.
