Located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Dehradun is a buzzing congested city surrounded by the Himalayan mountain ranges. Being the state capital of Uttarakhand, it is the hotspot of a plethora of state’s activities and functions. Dehradun tourism is on a rise as well as the city is evolving with modern times. Tourists pass the city to head to the major hill stations like Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, and Kanatal. The ones who stay back also get a lot to explore and enjoy. There is plenty to see and experience here. Even though Dehradun has become the hubbub for all the major activities of the state, the city maintains its vintage charm. Many structures and places have remained from the times of the British Raj in India that provide an insight into the history of this amazing place. Another factor about Dehradun that makes it an ultimate choice amongst the travelers is its lush green foliage. Driving along the roads of the city and enjoying a plethora of activities at its natural sights leaves people feeling mesmerized. Combining the natural beauty of Dehradun with all that it has to offer in terms of amenities, easy access to the other places in the state, the many amazing places, and things to do makes it quite popular amongst the tourists.
History of Dehradun
About Dehradun, it is said that it was a part of Kedarkhand, the abode of Lord Shiva. It has also been a part of the Garhwal Kingdom that came into formation later in time. The present town is named after ‘Guru Ram Rai’, the elder son of seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai who came here in the year 1675. There is a Temple cum Gurudwara in his memory that is still present in the central parts of the city. This place is called the Dera or settlement around which the entire town of Dehradun was developed. This structure was built in the year 1699 by Raja of Garhwal, Fateh Shah. The tomb is modeled on the structure of the tomb of Mughal Emperor Jehangir. Laden with frescos from the times of Mughals, Britishers, and the other Indian rulers, this place brings about all of the town’s history into one place.
Any Dehradun travel guide would tell you about the influence of Gorkhas in the town. The city was part of the Tehri Garhwal Kingdom and later became a part of the Gorkha Kingdom for about 12 years. The Gorkhas subsequently lost Dehradun to England and that’s when the British Raj took over. The Gurkha War (1814–1816), also known as the Anglo-Nepalese War was the iconic event that ousted the Gurkhas from their kingdom after the siege of the fort of Nalapani. From this time over, the Britishers took over and carried out their activities and governance.
Famous Food in Dehradun
The city is a hub of delicious street food. Moreover, it is home to a plethora of Maggi points, momo corners, and cozy cafes. In recent years, many retro bars, night clubs, and open mic places have established in the city. Momos and Bun Tikki are undoubtedly the most sought after food in Dehradun. If you are a Doonite, you are sure to have a favorite momo corner and preferred Maggi point.
