A beautiful hill station at its best

Uttarakhand Travel Guide & Tips

A divine land of Garhwalis and Kumaonis

Essential information of Uttarakhand

Here is some basic information of Uttarakhand state that will be handy during your visit to this beautiful state.

Keep reading for some insights that you will find on any tourist map of Uttarakhand.

Food of Uttarakhand

The culinary treasure of Uttarakhand is as renowned as its natural wealth. The main food of Uttarakhand varies from Kumaon to Garhwal division. Between Pithoragarh and Pauri, the traditional food of Uttarakhand depends on what local tribes prefer to eat. Most people in Uttarakhand prefer vegetarian cuisine, although non-vegetarians also have plenty to choose from.

Like other hilly regions in India, Uttarakhand cuisine relies on simplicity. Kafuli is a nutritious dish prepared from Spinach and fenugreek leaves. This healthy dish is complimented by steaming rice. The aroma of Fannah and Chainsoo will make you want to crave for more Garhwali cuisine. Both dishes have an earthy flavour that is essential to local people. Kandalee Ka Saag, Baadi, Phaanu, and Dubuk are some of the famous food of Uttarakhand. Jhangora Ki Kheer is a popular dessert having a rich texture. Gulgula, Bal Mithai, and Arsa are other sweets to try in the region.

Climate of Uttarakhand

Weather of Uttarakhand can be tricky to predict, especially in high-altitude places. Some far-flung roads are vulnerable to landslide, while others remain cut off due to snowfall in the winter season. Before going on trekking or camping in high-altitude valleys, make sure to pack rain gear and winter wear. The peak of summer and winter season brings a river of honeymooners, pilgrims, and adventurers from India and abroad. Dehradun and Haridwar witness heat waves in summer and day temperatures can reach up to 40°C.

Milder temperatures between April and June prevail in the higher Himalayas up north. This time is ideal to make a pilgrimage or plan a honeymoon in Uttarakhand. March is the best time to catch full bloom at the Valley of Flowers. Temperatures in winter – which lasts from November through February – range between sub zero to 15°C, especially in high-altitude regions. Nainital witnesses milder winters and a reasonable amount of snowfall. Weather in Uttarakhand may vary as per geographical features of the state.

Festivals of Uttarakhand

The state of Uttarakhand features an amalgamation of Garhwali and Kumaoni cultures. It’s a microcosm of time-honoured traditions and beliefs which are celebrated with great fervour by the locals. Despite the recent burst of commercialism, environmentalism is a belief that locals hold dear to themselves. There are numerous folk songs and tales about nature’s bounty that predates the famous Chipko Movement. The Garhwal region celebrates Saradotsava in October every year in the picturesque town of Pauri. It showcases local talent in forms of art, dance, and music. Choliya, Jhodha, and Chanchi are popular dance styles in Kumaon region. Chhopati, Basanti, and Chhura are popular folk songs voiced by Garhwalis. Bhaitauli, Ganga Dussehra, Phool Dei, and Kandali are famous festivals of Uttarakhand. Hindi is a predominantly spoken language in Uttarakhand. Local languages of Uttarakhand are Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari.

Sandip's 6 days trip to Uttarakhand

The travel agency Funtastic guided us very well—from planning the journey to taking care of each and every aspect during the trip. Special thanks to Ms. Kamini Madam whoc has guided and helped us a lot. Earlier, in January 2025, I had booked a travel package through TravelTriangle from other agent for Assam, and unfortunately, the experience was horrible. Because of that, I was initially reluctant to book again through TravelTriangle. However, I later realized that TravelTriangle is only a mediator, and the actual experience depends on the final travel agent handling the trip. Recently, we traveled to Uttarakhand with RiseNgo Pvt. Ltd., and this time the experience was excellent. We are very happy with the services provided by them. They took care of every detail throughout the journey and ensured a smooth and comfortable trip. We completed our trip successfully and landed at Navi Mumbai Airport today. Unfortunately, it appears that some people—possibly competitors—are posting incorrect and misleading remarks on this platform, which does not reflect our genuine experience. I am attaching the Some communication from travel agency with me which shows that how much they are taking care of travellers.

Vikas's 8 days trip to Uttarakhand

Travel triangle: Other than connecting possible 3 agencies I didn't get much help. When the actual booking varied from quote TT person didn't even respond. before booking, there are too many calls from TT & agents but after that, hardly any response. Holiday fusion: No issues with bookings & overall plan. Once you make first payment, response is very slow; delhi hotel was different ( and poor quality) than what was quoted. Car provided was quite old but driver was good. With CNG cars we have to keep luggage on top which makes luggage all dusty and we need to get down each time refilling is needed. Had to pay out of pocket (even though I was assured at the time of booking that driver will drop) to get dropped for safari earlier in the morning. My suggestion is for TT to connect us with local travel agents who have deep local knowledge to guide us appropriately.

Kuntal's 4 days trip to Uttarakhand

I recently went on a trip where the assigned driver was expected to show us all the designated points as per the itinerary. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The driver did not cover all the locations he was supposed to show. Throughout the trip, he appeared reluctant to take us anywhere and frequently complained about traffic jams. As a professional driver, it is expected to remain calm and manage traffic situations without letting it affect the service. Moreover, when he was unwilling or unable to take us to certain places, we suggested visiting other locations of our choice. However, he denied those requests as well. This lack of flexibility and unwillingness to accommodate reasonable locations significantly impacted the overall experience.

Shubham's 3 days trip to Uttarakhand

Please be careful while booking Nainital trip as your itenary will not fulfilled as per description. Secondly, Driver don't co-operate when it comes to there commission. But the Hotel was very good in Nainital with great service. Travel agent Virmesh Bhagat was also quite co-operative. But I would suggest all the other travellers to discuss in details about itenary.

I have given my feedback. overall trip was very good, no major surprises in trip. There are few areas of improvement on agent side but those are not really major issues but small improvement pointers to make trip WOW rather than just VERY GOOD trip.

I had a nice trip with Travel Triangle. Overall, it was a good experience—the itinerary was well-planned, and everything went smoothly. The food and hotels were quite good, better than I expected. I’m happy with the service and would consider booking with them again.

Nitin's 8 days trip to Uttarakhand

We recently booked our trip through TT, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The cab driver assigned to us was very polite, professional, and cooperative throughout the journey, which made our travel smooth and comfortable. The hotel arrangements were good in terms of cleanliness and comfort, and the locations were convenient. However, the food quality in the DLS group of hotels was quite disappointing. The breakfast options were below average and could use significant improvement. It would be helpful if the agency could ensure better hotel selections in the future—especially those that also provide proper meals and resting facilities for drivers, as this contributes to a smoother travel experience for all. Despite these issues, the overall coordination by the agency was satisfactory, and we still managed to enjoy our trip.
