About Changangkha Lhakhang in Thimphu
Changangkha Lhakhang Bhutan, built in the 12th-century temple, is the oldest temple in Bhutan and has been visited daily by the locals for the past 800 years. Although the exact date or year of its foundation is unknown, history of Changangkha Lhakhang suggests Phajo Drugom Zhigpo as the person who also founded the Drukpa Lineage carried on by his son Nyima. The temple is situated 2.5 km away from the Thimphu clock tower and presents a magnificent view of the town walking around the pilgrim path also known as the back kora. It is a common practice for the town people to circle around the temple on the pilgrim path during the evening. There are prayer bells outside the temple with black and gold script, and two giant prayer wheels decorate the entrance to the inner sanctum. The temple houses the statue of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara and large size sacred scriptures.
The Changangkha Lhakhang temple is rooted deep into the local culture and customs and is an indispensable part of the local community. The locals visit the temple to seek the blessings of deity Tamdrin for their children and ask the resident monks to name their newborn kids. One can offer Ngultrum, snacks, biscuits, incense, and whiskey in exchange. The Changangkha Lhakhang temple has been lit from below by the Bhutan Power Corporation with white lights giving the upper wood walls an orange colour, and the window recesses are lit by artery red lights.
