Dochula Pass, Thimphu (Bhutan)

Situated at a height of 3100 meters, Dochula Pass is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Bhutan. In a broader sense, it is a route that lies between Bhutan’s present capital Thimphu and older royal capital Punakha. This pass was once part of a couple of ancient trade tracks, like Dochula Nature Trail or Lumitsawa Ancient Trail. It is now a favorite tourist destination of the country.

History of Dochula Pass

Being located at this altitude, Dochula Pass temperature remains around 2°C to 8°C, varying throughout the daytime in summer. But in winter, the place is covered with a layer of white snow. The main attraction of Dochula Pass Thimphu is the memorial ground – a collection of 108 mausoleums called Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens. These were erected in 2004 in memory of the Bhutanese soldiers that lay down their lives for the country during the Operation All Clear fought in 2003 against some Indian rebel groups. The chortens are arranged in concentric circles on a patch of the green mound on the route. It is an important part of Dochula Pass history as well as the country.

Attractions of Dochula Pass

These chortens were consecrated by the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. It is her husband, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, under whose regime the battle was fought, and the victory was achieved. To honor him, and also to commemorate the centenary of the Bhutanese monarchy, there is a temple here at Dochula Pass Bhutan as well.

The Druk Wangyal Lhakhang Temple here, built in authentic Bhutanese architecture and embellished with themes and murals based on Bhutanese history, culture, and traditions. Inside, there are photographs of the martyrs, paintings of the royal Wangchuck dynasty, and other pictures of Bhutanese monks from the past and the present.

All these in Bhutan Dochula Pass are set against a beautiful, panoramic view of the snow-clad Eastern Himalayas, including Mt. Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak of Bhutan.

Festival of Dochula Pass

If one decides to visit Nepal and go to Punakha during the winter, say in December, they are in good luck. Every year on December 13, Dochula Druk Wangyel Tshechu (or festival) takes place in the green grounds of Dochula Pass. Bhutanese men and women in their traditional bright clothes and masks perform to folk music, and it is quite a sight to watch. This is not one of the original tsechus of Bhutan but was later created in 2011 to commemorate the fallen soldiers and other sacrifices of the operation.

    • Trip to Bhutan

They promised a driver cum guide but we got only non-talkative drivers. One of the hotels booked was horrible, a dingy place above a wine shop (Barring that exception, all hotels were good to excellent). Other than that, there were minor hiccups almost on a daily basis that required maybe 30 mins each day to sort. So its not a worry-free holiday.

    • Trip to Bhutan

The trip was really well arranged. Himavat Travels was really helpful. From the starting by hotel booking till we reach back home, they were continuously in touch. Himanshu from himavat was specially very much helpful. All the steps were taken care very professionally. Only one small concern was the hotel in Thimphu. The first hotel was not at all at 2 star level. But it was taken care of very fast. All over really great experience. I would again come back for my next trip. I am really impressed. Also a special thanks to Varun from travel triangle for all the help. Can’t point out anything special. But the scenic beauty of Bhutan is gorgeous. It’s literally the heaven on earth. Although I really enjoy the Dzong visit at Punakha. The scenes were extraordinary.

    • Trip to Bhutan

The driver who was assigned to us had no information of the places. He was supposed to be driver cum guide but he was clueless of the places and he had no idea of the itenery provided to us. So far bad experience in terms of driver survice provided by travel triangle. We had to ask local people for the places mentioned in our itenery as driver told us nothing about the place or museum (not even the basic open or close timings) We did trek to tiger nest, though it was hectic the view was worth the climb.

    • Trip to Bhutan

Hi,The hotels and itenary given by your were really good. The executives were also friendly and very helpful and kind to take the feedback every moment. only thing we got upset was for last day ,when we had informed the the driver to come to pick us at 2.30 am as we had to reach bagdogra at 12 noon ,he did not come infact avoided our calls to receive. When Mr Aditya Joshi gave us the Local Agents no Mr Agraj after receiving first call when driver did not reach even he started avoided calls that was not expected from a professionals ones. My wife was not feeling well that day and coz of this nuisance by you we had to suffer that day. Finally my hotel cook arranged his friends vehicle for me at 3.45 am, finally we reached Bagdogra airport on time but negligence of driver that moment should have been avoided. The Texa Trove management should take care of such things in future to avoid with the guests. Overall our trip was very memorable ,thanks to Mr Kunal & Mr Aditya. Regards Kapil.

Travel to Bhutan with Bhutan Inc was a wonderful experience. Bhutan is a beautiful country with amazing people. We had booked our flights on our own and with help of Travel Triangle finalized Bhutan inc as our agent. We interacted with Mr.Hari who was available anytime and answered all our queries, adjusted our hotels as per our needs. On reaching Paro airport, we were picked up by Mr. Rinchen in Hyundai H1, which we requested. He was very very helpful throughout our trip, took good care of us. Hotel Namseling in Thimphu was very good and close to the craft bazaar. Rooms were neat and breakfast good, more than that the people running the hotel were amazing. In Punakha we stayed at Damchen resort in a beautiful location on banks of a river. However the food was not good, especially breakfast. We stayed at Soenam Tsokhang resort in Paro. It was located far from Paro but rooms were good, food was very good and again amazing people are running the place. They took care of us very well. I would recommend travelling to Bhutan with Bhutan inc.
