History of Mughal Garden In New Delhi
Mughal Gardens was one of the favorite types of garden for the founder of the Mughal empire, Babur. It was earlier known as charbagh. During the rule of Mughals, bageecha or baug was the term used for gardens. According to Babur it was one of a kind. As India did not have the rapid flowing streams that was required for the Central Asian charbagh, this was a venture to do so. The Aram Bagh of Agra is supposed to be the first charbagh in South Asia. Detailed textual analyses of the Mughal gardens are also found in the memoirs and biographies of Babur, Humayun and Akbar.
Located in the premises of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mughal Garden boasts extravagant foliage, fountains, climbing roses, symmetrical lawns and wandering peacocks. It is said that Louis Mountbatten, last British viceroy of India, employed 418 gardeners for the Mughal Garden in India.
