The marvelous garden sprawls across a large area of 90 acres and has beautiful monuments and tombs inside its premises. Famed Bollywood movies such as Lakshya, Fanaa, and Kurban have been filmed here.

History of Lodhi Gardens

The earliest tomb in the garden, the tomb of Mohammed Shah, was built in the year 1444 by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah. The tomb was built in the loving memory of the then ruler, Mohammed Shah. As compared to other Mughal architecture in India, Lodhi Garden has only a limited architecture from these two periods. It is considered as an important place of preservation. During the rule of emperor Akbar, the Garden was remodeled to be used as an observatory and to safeguard the records in a library built there.

Structure of Lodhi Gardens

The Lodhi Garden was originally named after Lady Willingdon, the then-wife of the British Resident. The Garden was a venture to protect the Lodi-era tombs and preserve it as a tourist attraction. The garden is equipped with more than one hundred species of trees and more than fifty species of rare birds and butterflies. The Garden is not only home to flora and fauna but also acts as a protected habitat for them. Inside the Lodhi Garden, there are more than a dozen fabulous Mughal monuments that were constructed in the 15th century. The most notable structures of the Lodhi Garden are Mohammed Shah’s tomb, twin tombs of Bada Gumbad and Sheesh Gumbad and the walled complex of Sikander Lodi's tomb. Spot the Athpula which is an eight-pierced bridge running a small lake. This dates back to Emperor Akbar’s reign.
