Best Time to Visit Athens

Summers in Athens is hot and sunny. Athens temperature in March and April are comparatively much milder. The temperature in Athens in May to is quite fine, sneaking around 30°C-32°C. From June, the heat starts to rise and stays for at least three long months till it starts to cool down in September. Athens weather in August and July are the driest, even with the vicinity to the sea. The average summer temperature in Athens is around 35°C in most places, but the urban centers can have it higher than the suburbs because of man-made heat. In fact, Athens, Greece holds the record for having the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe, at 48°C, back in 1977.

The weather conditions in Athens have both its benefits and drawbacks. On the one hand, the summers are the best time for sightseeing and other activities. But the crowds will be thicker and thus there will be more foot-fall at the points of interests, making it difficult to enjoy calmly. Prices of flights and accommodations will also be higher since it is the peak season. On the other hand, trips during the months from November to February will be often interspersed by rains. The tourists will have to be ready with raincoats or umbrellas and always be cautious of the rain. The beach will also not be the same without the sun. Everything taken into consideration, springs, and autumns are the best time to pay a visit to the Greek capital. The prices are lower than in mid-summer, and the crowds are thinner as well. However, if one really wants to visit at other times or is compelled to for prior reservations, there is no need to worry. Irrespective of the season, Athens is always fun and easy to wander around and visit the places of interest.

Athens does not really enjoy the season of winter. The months of November to February have much lesser temperature than June-July, but also have much higher humidity and precipitation. Athens in winter is rainy. November to February are the months when it showers in Athens, though not as heavily as the rest of Greece. The temperature goes down to 22°C on an average, which is a great development from the balmy heat of the summer. Athens weather in December is mostly cool, with frequent rainfall and relatively higher humidity.
