Adventure Activities Athens

The Greek capital city of Athens is an eclectic metropolis with one foot in the 21st century and another in the Before-Christ era. The question of what to do in Athens can never be easily answered - there are simply so many Athens points of interest. Over the years, the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans have left their architectural footprint in Athens. Centuries later, those very places have turned into great places of attraction and hubs for exciting activities.

Here are some of the most interesting things to do in Athens.

1. Climbing to the hilltops

The city of Athens is blessed with a diverse topography and thus has a number of hills which can be climbed up for a brilliant view from up there – from the pretty city on the land to the azure blue of the sea. One can take an entire day of hiking in Athens to enjoy climbing the different peaks the city has to offer. Other than the main Acropolis Hill, there is also the Filopappou Hill which overlooks the port of Piraeus. Vrahakia is the summit of the Areopagus Hill at the entrance of Acropolis. But the highlight of the trekking adventure would be up to the Lycabettus Hill, the highest peak in Athens. It looks over the entire city of blues and beiges. Heavenly is the word to describe how it looks from the top of Lycabettus Hill during sunset. It is one of the most exciting and fulfilling things to do around Athens.

2. See changing of the guards at Syntagma Square

The central Syntagma Square, dotted with numerous shops, outdoor cafes, and diners, also hosts a military performance by the Evzones – a ceremonial unit of Greek military. At the strike of every hour, a new unit comes down from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue from their barracks on Irodou Attikou and releases the previous guards from their posts. The manner in which they perform the march resembles an intricate form of performing arts and is witnessing it with the crowds is a fun thing to do in Athens. The show is a bigger one on every Sunday at 11 am.

3. Scuba diving and shipwreck diving along the Aegean Sea

Although not the most popular activities, water sports in Athens is certainly a rewarding one. The crystal blue of the Aegean Sea across the Attica Peninsula hides stretches of coral reefs and shipwrecks to explore. The Kalypso Reef in Saronida and the shipwrecks of SS Portugal and Apollonia II in Makronisos Island are a couple of popular spots. The beaches in Marousi, Varkiza, and Lagonisi have good places for scuba diving in Athens. Cape Sounion, known for the Temple of Poseidon is also among the top in the list.

4. Meet the poet-shoemaker Stavros Melissinos

The writer of many published poems and maker of Grecian sandals, Stavros Melissinos, is a legend of Athens. Meeting him in his small shoe shop, across Monastiraki Square would be the most unusual thing to do in Athens, Greece but you will regret it later if you don’t. His best-known work “The Rubaiyat” is taught at American and European universities, and his sandals have been worn by many Hollywood superstars. Who would not like to buy a sandal that even John Lennon had loved?

5. Taking a walk in Plaka

Not every activity has to be something exciting. Plaka in the Acropolis area is the oldest neighborhood in Athens. One can roam through the streets of Plaka shaded by colorful buildings and flower plants, do some shopping in Athens from the kitschy boutique shops, have a drink at the outdoor cafes, watch an outdoor movie at Cine Paris or take a glimpse of the old churches here and there. Walking in Plaka is your own time to spend in whichever way you like.

    • Trip to Greece

The trip was well in budget however, in Santorini hotel was extremely far away in the middle of no where, seemed like in the country side. However staff was really good there, but there were flies in our room which was a turnoff initially however it was alright. Mykonos hotel was really good, Athens art suites has good rooms but breakfast was extremely frugal. Other wise tour was well handled, excepted for the pickups from the ferry to the room where assistance could have been provided considering the language issues one has specially for transport in greece. Petinos in Mykonos & art suites room. Greece is extremely beautiful.

    • Trip to Greece

Everything was nice and comfortable out there. Just couple of points I felt could have been better :- 1. Hotel Marina:- This Hotel is very poor hotel for us to stay. Hotel rooms were very small; they provided room with 2 single beds for a couple; toilets were very dirty; location of the hotel was bad. I think you should provide a better hotel going forward. Just to mention , hotels at Myconos and Santorini were the best! We enjoyed our stay there. 2. Local Transfers:- Please have the option to include local transfers- hotel to ferry and vice versa etc. This costed us a lot and a bit of hassle. 3. Delos Tour:- Inclusions say that it includes transfers/entry tickets however we were asked to pay 12Euro each for the entry. This could have been included in the overall cost to avoid confusion. Hotels at Myconos and Santorini were too good for the location.

    • Trip to Maldives

Awesome trip to Maldives!! KesiaTravels did a fantastic job planning our trip to Greece! I was recommended to Travel triangle by a friend who had plan a trip several years back. Saloni specializes in Maldives and has suggested us a great package. I am generally a "Traveller", however, in a country like Maldives, and with limited days, Saloni really made all the difference in developing a well thought out plan. She maximized all our time. Every detail was arranged for us with the best of drivers, tour guides, and hotels. I really trust Saloni and Kesia Travels and would certainly seek her advise again for my next trip. one word to say it's a " Paradise and heaven on Earth".. we really enjoyed our honeymoon on the Dreamland "Fushifaru" Maldives

    • Trip to Greece

Our trip started from Rome to Florence and Venice. The trip could have been much better and our one day to Tuscan village was ruined because of late info from agent. There were so many things which could have been included like museums, art gallery and so on. The place is worth the visit but nobody informed us about commute system in Venice and all the points were very far from hotel .The services should be improved definitely if we are spending so much money and special arrangements should be done for honeymoon. Marina da Pisa Beach day out which we did by our own because our Tuscany lunch and day out was cancelled due to agent late info.

    • Trip to Greece

This holiday was planned in a very short span of time. Special thanks to Rohit and Prashant in helping us out get the best deals throughout the trip. They were always available on call and whatsapp even during the entire duration of the trip. I am sure even if I had self planned the trip it couldn’t have been better than this. Greece is a beautiful country and there are plenty things to explore. We had a mix of adventure, history and romantic destinations on our itinerary. In all it was a good trip. • Trip to Greece

The entire trip was very well organized. Garima helped us throughout the process - customizing our itinerary, suggesting places to visit, booking tickets as per our request, and providing assistance in the Visa process. She even helped us with our queries when we were in Greece. The hotels booked for us were simply superb. The hotel staff at Athens was not too friendly though. The sightseeing tours that were booked for us were very nice and hassle free. We faced no issues with pick up/drop, except for the pickup at Santorini but that too was because our ferry reached late, and it was handled well by the Destination Services staff. The itinerary had a perfect balance of activities and leisure time. We enjoyed the trip a lot. Kuods to Garima and Eji Travel Solutions for organizing such a nice and memorable trip for us! Thank you!!
