How to reach Manikaran from Kasol

You have three easy ways to cover the 4 to 5 km. Pick by budget, luggage and how much time you have.

By local bus (cheapest)

The cheapest way is the local bus. HRTC and private buses running the Kasol to Bhuntar route pass through Manikaran, so you flag one down on the main road near the Kasol bus stop. The fare is about Rs 10 to Rs 20, buses come by every 30 to 40 minutes through the day, and the ride takes 20 to 25 minutes because it stops along the way. This is the option most local pilgrims and backpackers use.

By taxi or private cab (fastest)

A private taxi from Kasol to Manikaran costs about Rs 300 to Rs 500 one way and takes 15 to 20 minutes. Shared taxis and jeeps also run this stretch for roughly Rs 40 to Rs 80 a seat, leaving once they fill up. A taxi is worth it if you are carrying luggage, travelling with elderly family, or want to reach early before the gurudwara gets busy.

By riverside trek (most scenic)

You can also walk. A well-marked path follows the Parvati river from Kasol to Manikaran and takes 45 minutes to about an hour at a relaxed pace. It stays flat for most of the way and passes small dhabas and the river, which makes it a pleasant morning walk rather than a hard trek. Carry water and wear proper shoes, as the last stretch near Manikaran can get crowded and slippery.

If you are heading to Manikaran without stopping in Kasol first, here is how far it is from the main airports, railheads and cities that feed the Parvati Valley. Each leg is the same distance in reverse, so use the table for the return journey too.

Nearest airport and railway station

The nearest airport is Bhuntar, also called Kullu-Manali Airport, about 35 km away, with limited flights from Delhi and Chandigarh. Most travellers instead fly or take a train to Chandigarh and drive up from there. The nearest narrow-gauge railhead is Joginder Nagar, around 140 km away with slow toy-train services, so the practical rail option is Chandigarh (about 280 km) or Pathankot (about 285 km). Both are broad-gauge stations with regular buses and taxis onward to Bhuntar and the Parvati Valley.

Manikaran sits at about 1,760 m, so it stays pleasant from March to June and again from September to early November, which is when most people plan a Kasol and Manikaran trip. Summers are mild and good for the hot springs, while winters are cold and the wider Parvati Valley can see snow, though the town itself stays accessible. Base yourself in Kasol for cafes and stays, and keep these in mind before you go.

• No inner-line permit or special pass is needed. Indian and foreign travellers can visit freely.

• Carry cash. ATMs are limited in Manikaran, and small shops, buses and the parking counter often do not take cards.

• Cover your head inside the gurudwara and carry a spare pair of socks, as the floor around the springs stays hot and wet.

• Parking near the gurudwara fills fast on weekends and festival days, so an early start or the local bus from Kasol saves time.
