How To Reach Coorg From Chennai

By Air:

To reach Coorg by air, Bangalore is one of the major airports (about 286 km away).This airport serves almost all the domestic and international airlines. However, in case of one traveling from Chennai, then Mangalore International Airport or Mysore Airport shall be the best pick. In case of Chennai, Mangalore International Airport and Mysore Airport are the nearest airports. Located about 160 kms and 120 kms away respectively from Coorg, Mangalore and Mysore airports are well connected to Hyderabad and from here, one can easily find private cabs and buses to Coorg. Although relatively expensive than train or car, this is the fastest way to reach Coorg and the time saved can thus, be used to explore the realms of nature and scenic beauty.

By Road:

Well, driving from Chennai all the way to Coorg is a tedious journey and can take about 12 hours. The distance from chennai to Coorg by road is a stretch of about 580 kms and is covered in three parts, that is, Chennai to Bangalore/Bangalore to Mysore/ Mysore to Coorg. So, travelling to Coorg in a day is possible but is really hectic and exhausting. It is advisable to start from Chennai super early in the morning, say around 3 A.M. so that one can reach Bangalore by 9 A.M. and Coorg around late afternoon. At other times, it would add to the tiring drive because of citylights and traffic. It is further advised  to take the NICE Road and not get into the city. The drive is something that is preferred less but if one is a road trip enthusiast, then go ahead and challenge oneselves because in the end, it all boils down to the chances one takes and the memories one makes.

By Train:

Coorg has no railway station of it’s own and the nearest railway station is Mysore Junction Railway Station. So one has to travel from Chennai to Mysore by train and further to Coorg by a cab or a bus. Coming onto the train options, there are two daily trains to Mysore. The first one is the Kaveri Express from Chennai Central, which is an overnight train. The second one is the Shatabdi Express, which is day traveling train, comparatively faster (with just one stop) but relatively more expensive. Apart from this, there are two weekly trains as well, connecting Chennai to Mysore. They are the Bagmati Express and the Mysore Express. So, a more reasonable and comfortable option than road would be taking a chennai to Coorg train, via Mysore and hiring a cab or hopping on a bus further. It is suggested to book one’s tickets well in advance.
