Maharashtra to Kashmir Distance & How to Reach (2026)

Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) and Jammu Airport (IXJ) are the main airports of Jammu and Kashmir. Many nonstop and connecting flights operate on this route on a daily basis from Mumbai. However, if you are willing to travel from Pune, note that only connecting flights are available. Traveling by train is another option to travel from Maharashtra to Kashmir, and since 2025 the railway runs all the way into the valley with one change of train. This means of transport is apt for those who don't mind the time taken and are on a lookout for a cheaper option. Note that there is no direct connectivity via buses. However, one can opt to travel by road taking several stops.

Maharashtra To Kashmir Distance

Maharashtra is a big state, so the answer depends on your city. Nagpur is the closest to Kashmir by air and Kolhapur the farthest, about 430 km apart in the run to Srinagar. The table gives the straight-line air distance to both Kashmir airports, the approximate road distance to Srinagar, and the train most people from each city use.

How we measured. Air distance is the great-circle distance between the two airports, calculated by our Kashmir desk from airport coordinates. Road distance is the fastest driving route via Delhi and NH44, rounded to the nearest 50 km. Train names and timings are from the Indian Railways NTES timetable as of October 2026. Some websites list Pune as closer to Kashmir than Mumbai. It isn't. Pune is about 48 km farther from Srinagar.

Here is how the three modes compare for the most common trip, Mumbai to Srinagar. From Pune add about 100 km by road, or a connection if flying.

Maharashtra To Kashmir By Flight

Traveling by flight is the most convenient option to cover the aerial distance of 1,667 km between Mumbai and Srinagar. There are several airports in Maharashtra, however, non-stop flights to Kashmir leave only from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air fly Mumbai to Srinagar non-stop in about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours. IndiGo has a non-stop from Mumbai to Jammu (IXJ) a few days a week, about 2 hours 35 minutes, which suits travellers heading to Vaishno Devi first. Connecting flights are available from Pune International Airport for both cities, mostly through Delhi, and the whole trip takes 5 to 7 hours. Advance fares from Pune start around Rs 7,300 and climb past Rs 13,000 in peak weeks. Nagpur (NAG) and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (IXU) also connect through Delhi. Nashik's Ozar airport has few routes, so most Nashik travellers drive the 170 km to Mumbai for a non-stop. Kolhapur travellers usually fly out of Pune or Mumbai.

Srinagar airport screens every vehicle, passenger and bag at an outer checkpoint about 1 km before the terminal, then again inside, so reach it at least three hours before a return flight. Morning flights are more reliable between December and February, when fog and snow can delay afternoon arrivals. For May, June and the Christmas to New Year weeks, book four to six weeks ahead, because these are Maharashtra's school and holiday peaks.

Maharashtra To Kashmir By Train

The railway now runs right into the Kashmir Valley. The Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) opened to passengers in June 2025, crossing the Chenab bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world. No single train runs from Maharashtra to Srinagar, though. You ride a long-distance train to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) or Jammu Tawi (JAT), then change to the Vande Bharat Express for the last leg. Traveling from Maharashtra to Kashmir by train takes about two days door to door from Mumbai or Pune, counting the night or the wait between trains.

From Mumbai, the Swaraj Express reaches Katra in the evening, after the day's Vande Bharat departures. Stay the night in Katra and board the morning 26401, which calls at Katra around 08:10 and reaches Srinagar before noon. From Pune, the Jhelum Express gets into Jammu Tawi at 09:45. That connects the same day with the 26403 Vande Bharat, which leaves Jammu Tawi at 13:20 and reaches Srinagar around 18:00. It does not run on Wednesdays. Timetables are from the published Vande Bharat timetable and fares from erail. Confirm both on IRCTC before you book.

The 26401 does not run on Tuesdays, so if the Swaraj Express gets you to Katra on a Monday evening, plan a second night there or take the afternoon Vande Bharat.

From Nagpur, the Andaman Express and the Himsagar Express pass through in the small hours and run straight to Katra. Travellers from Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar can board the Jhelum Express at Manmad, and Kolhapur travellers usually start at Pune. North of Delhi, long-distance trains run late in winter fog, so leave a buffer of three to four hours before any same-day connection.

Maharashtra To Kashmir By Road

Driving from Maharashtra to Kashmir means about 2,200 km from Mumbai, and nearly all of it is highway. The best route follows NH48 north through Gujarat and Rajasthan to Delhi, then NH44 through Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot and Jammu. After Jammu the road climbs through Udhampur and Ramban, crosses the Pir Panjal through the 8.5 km Banihal Qazigund (Navyug) tunnel, and drops into the valley at Qazigund for the last 70 km to Srinagar. From Nagpur, the shorter way to Delhi is NH44 itself, through Jhansi and Agra.

Most people split the drive into four days. These are the popular stops from Mumbai.

• Day 1, Mumbai to Udaipur, about 750 km on NH48.
• Day 2, Udaipur to Delhi or Gurugram, about 660 km.
• Day 3, Delhi to Jammu, about 590 km on NH44.
• Day 4, Jammu to Srinagar, about 250 km, 6 to 8 hours through the mountains.

The Jammu to Srinagar highway can close for a day or two after heavy snow or landslides between December and March, and one-way traffic is sometimes enforced around Ramban. Check the traffic advisory on the morning you leave Jammu. Carry photo ID for police checkpoints. Prepaid SIM cards from outside J&K do not work in the UT, so carry a postpaid connection. There is no single bus from Maharashtra to Kashmir. You can piece one together with a sleeper bus to Delhi and another to Jammu, but it costs more than the train and takes longer. From Jammu, shared taxis and JKSRTC buses run up to Srinagar, and a private cab is the quickest way.

Kashmir to Maharashtra: The Return Journey

The Kashmir to Maharashtra distance is the same in reverse, about 1,667 km by air from Srinagar to Mumbai. Non-stop flights from Srinagar to Mumbai mostly leave in the afternoon. For the train, take the Vande Bharat from Srinagar to Katra or Jammu Tawi, then the 12472 Swaraj Express to Mumbai Bandra Terminus, the 11078 Jhelum Express to Pune, or the 16032 or 16318 towards Nagpur. Book the return legs when you book the outward trip, since the trains fill up just as fast in both directions.

Best Time to Travel from Maharashtra to Kashmir

March to June is the most popular window, with the tulip garden in bloom from late March and green meadows into June. Fares from Maharashtra peak in May and early June, when schools close. September to November brings autumn chinar colours, clear skies and the best value. December to February is for snow in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, but plan around flight delays and road closures.
