Vaishno Devi Temple (Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan), Katra

The Shrine Board counted 13.96 lakh pilgrims in 1986, the year it took charge, and 101.15 lakh in 2011. That crowd is what you plan around, because the date you pick decides how long you queue at the Bhawan.

Compared with the Amarnath or Char Dham yatras, Vaishno Devi is easy to reach and open all year. A train runs to the foot of the track, and the 13 km path is paved, lit at night and roofed in long stretches, with water points, washrooms and food stalls all the way up.

The yatra is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), which was set up in August 1986 under the chairmanship of the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the state became a Union Territory in 2019, the Lieutenant Governor chairs it. The Board issues the yatra card, runs the guest houses, the helicopter and battery-car bookings and the Bhawan to Bhairon ropeway, and posts a daily yatra-status note on maavaishnodevi.org. Check that note on the morning you set out.

Vaishno Devi Yatra Route: Katra to Bhawan, Stage by Stage

The route is 13 km from Katra to the Bhawan, and it climbs 2,700 ft. Here is every official stop, with distance and altitude from the Shrine Board's own table. Older guides, Wikipedia among them, still say 12 km. The Board's current table says 13 km.

From Adhkuwari you choose a side. The old track climbs to Sanjichhat, the highest point, then drops gently for the last stretch to the Bhawan. It has more food stalls and shelters and it is the side that connects to the helipad. The new track via Himkoti is the gentler gradient and carries the battery cars, so it is the easier pick for older walkers. If you fly, the Shrine Board's helicopter notice puts the Bhawan about 2.5 km from the Sanjichhat helipad.

There is also the Tarakote Marg, a 7.5 km ramp-style walking track on the Banganga side of Katra, with its own entry and check post at Tarakote, that meets the main route at Adhkuwari. Ask at the Katra registration counter which side is lighter that day.

How Many Stairs Are There in Vaishno Devi?

There is no official step count for Vaishno Devi. The Shrine Board measures the yatra in kilometres (13 km from Katra to the Bhawan), not in stairs, and you can walk from Katra to the Bhawan on the ramp without taking the stepped shortcuts.

Most of the track is a wide, paved ramp with railings, and long sections are covered by a canopy against sun and rain. Flights of steps do exist, but they are shortcuts that cut across the bends of the old track. They save distance and cost you in the knees, especially on the way down. Skip them if you have joint trouble and stay on the ramp.

Numbers you will see online (300 steps, 1,000 steps, 2,100 steps) have no official source. Plan by distance and height instead. You are walking 13 km and gaining 2,700 ft, and if you take the old track you go up to 6,200 ft at Sanjichhat before dropping to the Bhawan.

How to Reach the Bhawan: Walk, Pony, Palki, Battery Car or Helicopter

Walking is free and most pilgrims do it. Every other option covers a fixed section only, so pick by who is in your group.

Two warnings from the Shrine Board. Helicopter seats are sold only through its own portal, and fake booking sites appear before every rush, so never pay on a site that isn't online.maavaishnodevi.org. And battery cars do not run on the Sanjichhat side. They work only between Adhkuwari and the Bhawan, and they stop after heavy rain or landslides.

A ropeway from Tarakote to Sanjichhat was approved in 2023 and work started in 2024 amid local protests. It has no firm opening date yet, so don't plan around it.

Is the Vaishno Devi Trek Difficult? Time on Foot, Elderly and Kids

The trek is moderate, not hard. It is long rather than steep, and a reasonably fit adult covers the 13 km uphill in 5 to 8 hours with rest stops, and comes down in 4 to 5.

Your pace matters more than your fitness. Families with children under ten usually take the full 8 hours. Walkers who start at 10 PM in summer avoid the heat entirely and reach the Bhawan by dawn.

For seniors, the easiest combination is the helicopter up to Sanjichhat, a pony or palki for the last 2.5 km, and the battery car from the Bhawan down to Adhkuwari. Another option is walking the first 6 km to Adhkuwari slowly and taking the battery car on to the Bhawan. The Shrine Board asks elderly pilgrims, children and anyone with a medical condition to consult a doctor before the yatra.

Yatra Registration and the RFID Card

Every pilgrim must register, and registration is free. Here is how it works.

• Step 1: Register online on the Shrine Board portal (online.maavaishnodevi.org) to get your Yatra Parchi, or register in person at the counters in Katra.
• Step 2: Collect your RFID Yatra Access Card at a Katra counter. The counter takes your photo, so carry an original photo ID for every adult.
• Step 3: Cross the first check post at Banganga within 6 hours of the card being issued. Miss that window and the card lapses, so you have to register again.
• Step 4: Keep the card on you for the whole yatra. It is scanned at check posts along the track.

During Navratri and the New Year rush the counters cap daily numbers. Register in the morning, and if you plan to walk at night, collect the card no more than a few hours before you set off.

Darshan at the Holy Cave: the Three Pindies and Atka Aarti

There is no idol inside the Holy Cave. The Goddess is worshipped as a natural rock about five and a half feet tall with three heads, the Pindies, which represent Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The Pindies form the sanctum, and the Shrine Board describes them as the ultimate destination of every devotee.

You join the queue at the Bhawan complex after depositing your phone, belt and anything leather in the cloak room. The darshan itself lasts a few seconds. For most of the year the queue runs through two man-made tunnels built for the crowds. The original narrow cave, where you wade over the Charan Ganga stream that rises at the base of the Pindies, is opened only in lean weeks, usually after Makar Sankranti in January and February.

Darshan runs 24 hours a day, except during the twice-daily Atka Aarti, performed in front of the Holy Cave. The morning aarti starts around 6:20 AM all year. The evening aarti is around 7:20 PM in summer and 6:20 PM in winter. Arrive outside those windows if you want the shortest queue. The full schedule is on the Vaishno Devi timings page.

The Legend and History of Mata Vaishno Devi

Devotees believe the Goddess took form as Vaishnavi, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. In the Shrine Board's telling she wished to become one with Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rama told her that time would come in the Kali Yuga, when he would appear as Kalki, asking her to set up an ashram at the base of the Trikuta hills and meditate until then. She is believed to be waiting there still, in the form of the Pindies.

The Shrine Board's own telling adds the chase that shaped the route. Guru Gorakhnath sent his disciple Bhairon Nath to test Vaishnavi. At a bhandara (community feast) organised by her devotee Pandit Shridhar in Hansali village, Bhairon tried to grab her, and she fled into the hills. She paused at Banganga, Charan Paduka and Adhkuwari, where she meditated for nine months in the narrow Garbh Joon cave, before reaching the Holy Cave. When Bhairon still followed, she beheaded him at the cave mouth, and his head fell on a distant hilltop. As he died he repented. The Goddess forgave him and granted that every pilgrim's yatra would be complete only after darshan at his shrine as well.

Some traditions also count the cave among the Shakti Peethas, the shrines linked to the body of Sati. Many devotees believe you reach the shrine only when the Mata calls you, the "bulawa".

Bhairon Nath Temple: Completing the Yatra

Bhairon Nath Temple stands at Bhairon Ghati, 1.5 km above the Bhawan at 6,619 ft, and it is the highest point of the yatra. Pilgrims go there after darshan at the Holy Cave, because the legend says the yatra is incomplete without it.

The Shrine Board's ropeway does the climb in about three minutes, from 9 AM to 5 PM, at Rs 100 per passenger to and fro. On foot it takes 45 to 90 minutes on a steep, paved, lit path. From Bhairon Ghati you can walk back down towards Sanjichhat and on to Katra without returning to the Bhawan. Rules: Phones, Cameras, Cloak Rooms and What to Carry

Phones, cameras and other electronics cannot go into the darshan queue or the Holy Cave. The Shrine Board's cloak-room notice goes further and says mobile phones, video cameras and other electronic equipment are not allowed on the track for security reasons, so leave what you can in the free cloak room at your Katra guest house. Anything you do carry up, along with leather belts and combs, must go into the Bhawan cloak room opposite queue gate No. 1 or in Sridhar Bhawan before you join the queue.

Free cloak rooms are available in all Shrine Board guest houses and lodging places in Katra, so leave your excess luggage there before you start. At the Bhawan there are at least two free cloak rooms open round the clock. The one opposite the main queue complex (gate No. 1) takes shoes, belts and everything not allowed in the cave. The one in Sridhar Bhawan takes your whole bag. Don't leave cash, jewellery or valuables in either.

Carry valid photo ID, your yatra slip and RFID card, drinking water, light snacks, prescribed medicines, a raincoat or poncho, shoes with good grip, and a warm layer. The Bhawan drops to -2 °C in winter.

Leave heavy or oversized bags, anything flammable and sharp objects behind.

On the track, use only the marked route (no shortcuts through unmarked trails), don't trek alone at night or in low visibility, don't stop near landslide-prone slopes or drains, and rest at the shelters on the steep sections. If the IMD or the district administration issues a heavy-rain or landslide alert, postpone the yatra.

The Bhawan has langars and Shrine Board food counters. Prasad can be bought at the Board's counters at Katra and the Bhawan, and the Board hands out blankets at the Bhawan to pilgrims staying the night.

Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi

The yatra is open all year. November and February give the calmest darshan, March to June and September to October give the best weather, and Navratri and the New Year week bring the biggest crowds.

Monsoon is the one season to treat with real caution. On 26 August 2025 a landslide at Adhkuwari killed more than 30 pilgrims (reports put the toll at 34 to 35). Since then the Shrine Board has been quicker to halt the yatra when the IMD issues alerts. Check the Board's daily status note and its X account @OfficialSMVDSB before you leave Katra. How to Reach Katra by Air, Train and Road

Katra is the base camp. The quickest way in is the train straight to Katra station. Flyers land at Jammu and drive about 50 km.

• Trains run straight to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station (SVDK), a short auto ride from the registration counters. Two Vande Bharat services run from New Delhi in about 8 hours (no Wednesday service on the 22477/22478 pair), alongside regular expresses from across India. Since June 2025, trains also continue north from Katra to Srinagar over the Chenab bridge, which makes a Kashmir add-on easy.

• Flights land at Jammu, the nearest airport. From there or from Jammu Tawi station, a taxi takes 70 to 80 minutes to Katra. Check the officially approved taxi rate and insist on paying only that.

• Buses, ordinary and luxury, leave Jammu for Katra every 10 to 15 minutes and take about 2 hours. Ordinary buses go from the bus stand about 1 km from Jammu railway station, and luxury buses from just outside the station.

• Driving from Delhi, take NH 44 to Jammu. You can skip Jammu city by the Kunjwani bypass, about 10 km before it, and turn off for Katra at Domel, about 35 km from Jammu. The hill road winds, so carry something for motion sickness.

Where to Stay: Shrine Board Rooms and Katra Hotels

Most pilgrims stay in Katra, the night before the walk and the night after. You can also stay on the mountain.

The Shrine Board runs rooms and dormitories at Jammu, Katra, Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat and the Bhawan. They are bookable online on the Board's portal and fill early for Navratri and the New Year. A room at the Bhawan lets you do darshan late at night and walk to Bhairon at first light. The yatra itself costs almost nothing. Your real spend is transport, stay and any help on the track.

Most pilgrims add one or two stops before heading home.

• Bhairavnath Temple sits 1.5 km above the Bhawan and completes the yatra.

• Shiv Khori is a cave shrine of Lord Shiva in the same Reasi district, an easy day trip from Katra.

• Raghunath Temple, Jammu's 19th-century Rama temple complex, fits in on the way back to the airport or station.

• Mansar Lake, a sacred lake east of Jammu, makes a calm half day after the climb.

• Patnitop, a pine-forest hill stop on the Jammu to Srinagar road, is the usual add-on in Patnitop tour packages.
