How to reach Kovalam at a glance

Kovalam has no airport or railway station of its own. Every mode routes through Thiruvananthapuram, then covers the final stretch by taxi or bus.

By air: Trivandrum International Airport (TRV)

Flying is the fastest and least tiring option. Head for Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) in Thiruvananthapuram, the nearest airport to Kovalam at about 15 km, roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive. Prepaid taxis at the arrivals counter charge around Rs 500 to 700 for the run down to the beach. TRV handles domestic and international flights, so connections are easy: from Chennai and Bengaluru the flight is about an hour, and from Mumbai around two hours. Land, clear the terminal, and you can have your feet in the sand inside an hour of touchdown.

By train: Trivandrum Central (TVC)

The nearest railway station to Kovalam is Trivandrum Central (Thampanoor), about 16 km away, a 30 to 40 minute taxi ride depending on traffic. It is a major junction with trains from across the country, which makes the train a genuinely practical way in, not just a cheap one. Direct services run from Chennai (about 11 hours), Bengaluru (about 16 hours) and Mumbai (about 18 hours). Step off the platform at Thampanoor, walk to the prepaid taxi bay or the bus stand outside, and finish the last leg to Kovalam by cab or local bus. It is slower than flying but a fraction of the cost.

By road and bus: KSRTC and private coaches

Kovalam is well linked by road along NH-66, which runs down the coast through Thiruvananthapuram toward Vizhinjam. KSRTC and private operators run buses to Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru, Madurai, Chennai and Nagercoil, among others; from the city, frequent local buses and autos cover the final 16 km to the beach, and a handful of services run closer to Kovalam itself. If you would rather drive, a self-drive car gives you the freedom to detour to Poovar or Vizhinjam on the way, and saves you paying for taxis or buses once you are there. Book the last-mile taxi from a prepaid counter to avoid haggling.

Getting around Kovalam

Kovalam itself is small and walkable. The three main coves, Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach and Samudra Beach, sit within a couple of kilometres of one another, linked by a promenade you can stroll in 15 to 20 minutes. For anything further, autorickshaws are everywhere; agree the fare before you set off or ask for the meter. Taxis are easy to arrange through your hotel for day trips to Poovar, Vizhinjam or Padmanabhapuram, and local buses connect Kovalam to Thiruvananthapuram through the day. Many travellers rent a scooter to reach the quieter southern beaches at their own pace.
