Best Time to Visit Kovalam: Month-wise Weather, Sea & Festival Guide

Kovalam sits on the Arabian Sea about 16 km south of Thiruvananthapuram, and its three crescent beaches (Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra) change character sharply through the year. Two facts catch most first-timers out. November still gets the tail of the northeast monsoon, with 213 mm of rain on average, so the season opens wet and only settles by mid-December. And October, not July, is the second-wettest month of the year. Plan around those two and you avoid most of the washed-out trips we hear about from travellers.

Kovalam in January

January is Kovalam at its most dependable. Highs average 32.4°C and lows 22.3°C, and the month averages about one rainy day (18 mm). Mornings are flat enough for nervous swimmers to wade in between the flags at Lighthouse Beach, and parasailing and speedboat operators run full days. In the city, the Swathi Sangeethotsavam music festival fills the courtyard of Kuthiramalika palace every evening from 4 to 13 January, and the concerts are free. The catch is crowds, because the first week still carries New Year rates.

Kovalam in February

February feels the driest of all. There's 22 mm of rain in the month and humidity drops to its yearly low of 63%. Days reach 32.8°C, so swim before 11 am and after 4 pm, and eat dinner outside at the Lighthouse Beach cafés while nights hold at 23°C. In 2027, Attukal Pongala runs from 14 to 23 February, and the main Pongala offering is on 22 February. That day, city hotels fill up and roads into Thiruvananthapuram jam, so stay in Kovalam and set off early. The Nishagandhi Dance Festival at Kanakakkunnu Palace also fell in February in 2026 (13 to 20 February).

Kovalam in March

March is the last dry month and the best value in the peak window. Rain stays at 31 mm over about two days, but the heat climbs to 33.5°C. The sea is still calm, water sports carry on, and hotel rates start to ease after the winter rush. Check one date before you book a flight. The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple's Painkuni Aarattu procession heads to Shanghumugham Beach in March or April, and Trivandrum airport suspends flights for about five hours that evening.

Kovalam in April

April is the stickiest month. Lows stay around 25°C, humidity rises to 73%, and pre-monsoon thunderstorms arrive on about seven afternoons (122 mm in all). Mornings stay bright and the sea is mostly calm, so do your swimming early. Vishu, the Malayali new year, falls on 14 or 15 April with fireworks and early temple visits. Resorts discount noticeably from April, which makes it the cheapest month that still reliably allows a swim.

Kovalam in May

May is a month of two halves. Rain jumps to 214 mm across nine days as the monsoon builds, and in the last week the swell starts rising and lifeguards begin hoisting red flags. The IMD's normal monsoon onset date for Kerala is 1 June, so the first three weeks are the safer bet. Water-sport operators start packing up around mid-May. If parasailing is on your list, come before then.

Kovalam in June

Kovalam's weather in June is the wettest of the year, with 308 mm over 16 rainy days. The Arabian Sea turns rough and brown, lifeguards keep everyone out of the water, and high-wave alerts can shut the beaches completely for a day or two. Highs drop to 30.4°C, and the steady rain makes it feel cooler. From 9 June, Kerala's 52-day trawling ban keeps the mechanised boats in harbour until 31 July, but the small country boats still go out, and you'll see them landed on the sand at Hawa Beach. Come for Ayurveda, rain over the sea and the lowest room rates of the year.

Kovalam in July

July is wet but softer than June: 185 mm over 13 days, and highs of 30.1°C, the coolest month of the year. The sea stays rough, so the beach is for walking and watching the surf. Mid-July brings Karkidakam, the Malayalam month that Kerala's Ayurveda tradition treats as the ideal time for rejuvenation therapy. Resorts along the Kovalam cliffs run Karkidaka chikitsa programmes of 7, 14 or 21 days. The trawling ban lifts at midnight on 31 July.

Kovalam in August

Kovalam's weather in August is brighter, with 161 mm over about ten days and noticeably more sunshine than June or July. The sea is still unsafe for swimming for most of the month. Two festivals usually shape it. Karkidaka Vavu, the new-moon day of Karkidakam, brings thousands to the Karamana river at Thiruvallam, about 6 km from Kovalam, for ancestral rites from 2:30 am (it fell on 12 August in 2026). Onam follows in late August or September (Thiruvonam was 26 August in 2026). Thiruvananthapuram lights up for Onam week, and holiday demand from within Kerala pushes rates up for a few days, so check the year's date before you book.

Kovalam in September

September brings 197 mm over ten days and highs of 30.9°C. The southwest monsoon weakens late in the month and the sea begins to settle, but lifeguards decide beach by beach, so swim only where they wave you in. Rates are still low and the beaches are thin on people. Late September is a sensible gamble if you want quiet sand and don't mind an afternoon shower.

Kovalam in October

October surprises people. The northeast monsoon makes it Kovalam's second-wettest month, with 297 mm over 13 days, and it usually falls as a heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorm after a bright morning. The sea is moderate. There's culture to make up for it. Navaratri concerts fill the Navaratri Mandapam beside the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, and the Alpassi Aarattu procession (October or November) brings another five-hour airport shutdown. Kovalam in November

November opens the season, but it's still wet: 213 mm over about ten days, mostly as evening downpours in the first half of the month. The sea calms week by week, lifeguards return to full duty and the water-sport stalls on Lighthouse Beach reopen. Highs of 31°C and lows of 23.2°C are comfortable. Rates rise after the third week, so the first half of November is the value window before the peak.

Kovalam in December

December is the first truly dry month: 68 mm over four days, highs of 32°C and a calm sea. It's also the busiest month. Rooms between 20 December and 2 January cost the most all year, and Lighthouse Beach is packed for Christmas and New Year's Eve. Peak season (December to March): best weather

This is the best time to visit Kovalam, Kerala. The sky is clear, the sea is calm and every activity is open. Nights average 22°C and afternoons 32°C to 33°C, so leave the sweaters at home. Humidity is at its yearly low, which makes long beach walks easy. The trade-off is price and people, both of which peak at Christmas and New Year.

Summer (April and May): hot, humid and cheaper

Summer is hot and sticky but manageable if you live by the mornings and evenings. Afternoon thunderstorms become common from mid-April. The beaches are quieter, resorts discount their rooms, and the sea stays swimmable in the mornings until about mid-May.

Southwest monsoon (June to September): rain, green and Ayurveda

June is the wettest month, and the rain eases through July and August. The sea turns rough and swimming stops, but walking the promenade in a downpour while surf breaks over the lighthouse rocks is its own experience. This is Ayurveda season, hotels give their biggest discounts, and the heaviest rain days can delay road travel.

Northeast monsoon (October and November): stormy evenings, bright mornings

After a short lull in late September, the rain returns in October as heavy afternoon and evening storms after bright mornings. October is the second-wettest month and November is still wet. The sea settles through November and the season properly opens around the middle of the month. Book flexible rooms and plan outdoor time before lunch.

Is the Sea Safe? Swimming and Water Sports by Month

Kovalam's beaches are free, public and open all day, but the sea sets the rules. Kerala Tourism lifeguards patrol Lighthouse and Hawa beaches during daylight hours and mark the safe zone with flags. Red flags mean nobody goes in. During the southwest monsoon, when the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issues a high-wave alert, the district administration can close the beaches to visitors altogether. Rip currents form near the rocky headlands even on calm-looking days, so stay between the flags whatever the month.

Surf schools on Lighthouse Beach teach beginners from about October to May, when the waves are small and regular. The bigger monsoon swell is for experienced surfers only. Water sports stop whenever the sea turns rough, so the window is November to mid-May, with December to March the most reliable. That's when parasailing, surfing lessons, speedboat rides, kayaking and snorkelling around the rocks run full days, and the water is at its clearest. Most operators close by late May.

For the cheapest trip, come in April and May for discounted rooms and fewer people, or June to September for the biggest discounts of the year. Winter (December to February) gives the clearest air and golden light, especially in the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset from the lighthouse viewing gallery at Vizhinjam. The monsoon gives dramatic clouds, green hills and big surf, which suit landscape shots better than beach portraits.

Kerala's Ayurveda tradition considers the monsoon, and especially Karkidakam (mid-July to mid-August), the best time for treatments. Practitioners say the damp, cool air opens the pores and helps the body absorb herbal oils, and many Kovalam resorts run special Karkidaka chikitsa packages of 7 to 21 days at monsoon prices. Kovalam Beach Timings and Sunrise

Kovalam's beaches have no gates and no entry fee, but daylight is when lifeguards are on duty, so plan to swim between about 9 am and 5 pm and use the early morning for walks. Sunrise ranges from about 6:00 am in May and June to 6:40 am in January and February. Sunset falls between about 5:55 pm in November and 6:45 pm in July. Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach is the most patrolled of the three and the safest place to swim from December to March. Walk it before 8 am, when the promenade cafés are still shut, and come back for the last hour of light, when the striped lighthouse on the southern rocks catches the sunset. From December to February the water-sport stalls line the sand.

Hawa Beach (Hawah Beach, Eve's Beach)

Hawa Beach is smaller and quieter than Lighthouse Beach, tucked against the rocky headland. Swimming is possible from about November to March, when the sea is calm and lifeguards are on duty. At dawn you'll often see fishermen hauling in the long shore nets by hand, which is the best free show in Kovalam. Couples and photographers like its rougher, more natural feel.

Samudra Beach

Samudra Beach is the northernmost and most peaceful of the three, away from the café strip. It shelves steeply and has strong currents, so treat it as a walking beach in every season, not a swimming one. Visit in winter or on early summer mornings for long walks, meditation and quiet photography.

Walk from Lighthouse Beach to Hawa at sunrise, climb the Vizhinjam lighthouse for the view down the coast (open Tuesday to Sunday), and take a boat through the Poovar backwaters where the river meets the sea, about 17 km south. Summer activities (April and May)

In summer, get outside early. Walk the beach at 6:30 am, swim while the sea is still calm, and keep the hot afternoon for spa treatments, yoga or a long seafood lunch in the shade. Monsoon activities (June to September)

With swimming off the table, the monsoon is about Ayurveda, food and rain-watching. Varkala, about 55 km north, has the same climate, so the best months are the same (December to March) and neither beach is safe for swimming in the southwest monsoon. The difference shows in the off-season.
